This is your final reminder that July 29th is the last day to apply for the Starwood American Express card and claim a 20,000 SPG points (=25,000 Avios) sign-up bonus.

Based on historic patterns, I would expect the bonus to drop back to 10,000 points (= 10,000 Avios) after the 29th.

The key point with this card is that you can apply for it whatever other Amex cards you have.  There are no restrictions.  The only people who cannot apply (assuming you meet the income requirement) are people who have already had this card and cancelled less than 6 months ago.

My full review of the SPG Amex is here.   The Amex home page for the SPG card is here.

SPG Amex

The sign-up bonus of 20,000 SPG points is a good deal if you redeem for hotel stays at Sheraton, Westin, W, St Regis, Luxury Collection etc. You can also convert 20,000 SPG points into airline miles. The great news here is that 20,000 SPG points is the trigger required to get a 5,000 mile bonus. Whilst the standard bonus of 10,000 SPG points only gets you 10,000 airline miles, when you convert 20,000 you get 20,000 airline miles plus 5,000 extra!

Your 20,000 SPG points sign-up bonus would therefore get you 25,000 airline miles! You can convert to Avios, of course, but also to a lot of other airlines. There are over 30 airline partners in total.

Now, here are the facts on the card:

  • 20,000 SPG points when you spend £1,000 within 3 months (£1,000 is a very modest target for such a good deal)
  • 1 SPG point per £1 spent going forward
  • £75 annual fee, refunded pro-rate if you cancel
  • £30,000 household income requirement
  • No problem getting the bonus even if you have a BA, Platinum, Gold or any other Amex

Now, the obvious thing to do with Starwood points is to use them for Sheraton, Westin, W, aloft etc hotel stays. Here is the reward chart if you want to see how far 20,000 points will get you. When my wife got this bonus, I redeemed them for a hotel in Greece that got me £370 of value for my sign-up bonus – see here for that story.

For many people, though, they are more valuable as airline miles. This is especially true when you have 20,000 of them – as you will – since Starwood gives you a 5,000 mile bonus when you convert 20,000.

SPG has a huge number of airline partners20,000 SPG points will get you:

  • 25,000 Avios points
  • 25,000 Virgin Flying Club miles
  • 25,000 Miles & More miles
  • 25,000 miles with Air Canada, airberlin, Air China, Alaska, Alitalia, ANA, American, Asia Miles, Asiana, China Eastern, China Southern, Delta, Emirates, Etihad, Flying Blue, Hawaiian, Japan Airlines, Qatar, Saudi Arabian, Singapore, Thai, US
  • 12,500 United miles
  • 37,500 LAN LANPASS miles
  • 385 Air New Zealand points

The card is especially valuable if you want to generate some miles in one of the airline partner programmes apart from Avios. There aren’t that many easy ways to earn, for example, 25,000 Miles & More or Aeroplan miles from the UK.

If you recently applied for the American Airlines card with the 35,000 miles sign-up bonus, you could use this card to get an additional 25,000 American Airlines miles.  You need 50,000 AA miles for a Business Class return one-way ticket from the UK to US, for example, so this is a good way to get the extra.

You also have the option of using your SPG points to book a cash flight.  I wrote about the SPG Flights redemptions here.  25,000 SPG points would get you a flight selling for up to £210.

There are two other perks to the Starwood card which are not clearly mentioned on the application form:

  • If you cancel, you get a pro-rata refund of your £75 fee
  • Starwood points can be transferred – for free – between two members who live at the same address. You can therefore get a card in the name of your partner, move the points to your SPG account and then redeem them into your airline account

It doesn’t say anywhere that 29th July is last day and I know the post refers to historic patterns. I am currently remortgaging (with tr same bank to a cheaper product)…any views on whether I might be risking my remortgage by applying for this card (I am also doing a mortgage equity withdrawal at same time). Thanks!

    • Rob says:

Go to spg.com (from a UK computer), card is advertised on the home page with the deadline

  • Boi says:

Myself and hubby reached limit within a month. SPG points (incl bonus) still there and not transfered. called them couple of times and they say points only transfered once a month and have missed the transfer deadline which is at same time as when I get statement. I am not happy about this coz I wanted to cancel swiftly. Is this true?anything else I could do?

    • Rob says:

Nothing you can so. Points cut off date is 6 days before the end of your statement period, all Amex cards work the same way. It is only another £6 though! (£75/12)

  • Rob says:

1250 Avios, assuming the 25 per cent conversion bonus.

And, if kept as SPG points and used for hotels, the extra 1,000 should get you £20-£25 of value.

  • LP says:

Be sure that the SPG account is linked to the AMEX, my SPG points have been stuck on my AMEX account for ages, took a few phonecalls to get them to link the 2 accounts.

  • Simon says:

I now have two cards with Amex and 2 with MBNA. I have just got the SPG card today and done the spend so will cancel as soon as the points move on over. I will then make sure I am ready in 6 months to get the next card.

  • xcalx says:

Grandma xcalx(82) was approved instantly 10 days ago with a £6000 limit. The spend was completed in one visit to Tesco on Monday 20 X £50 Visa Gift Cards using 20 X £5 Helping Hand coupons.
Can’t believe that Amex did not question 20 X £48.95 transactions that took place within 30 minutes. I had previously received a call for spending 4 X £100 in Tesco over a few minutes

    • Neil Spellings says:

Did you go back to the same checkout 20 times? Didn’t it attract any attention from staff?

I guess you are getting £50 worth of credit for £48.95 with the helping hand vouchers so not a bad deal, especially if meeting a minimum spend target.

I presume you don’t get the 150 bonus points on Visa cards, but just the 53 points for each card you buy?

  • Rob says:

No, this is an old dead link. You can tell it is dead because it only adds on 1% extra whilst the new payment structure gives you 5% extra.

You need to go via the link in my original post, search for American Express and go to their home page. You will then see the £15.75 deal. That link will work.

  • crabolas says:

I may be misreading the documents I received, but no one has mentioned that if you reach £15,000 spend in a year the card becomes 4spg points per pound spent! (6/pound at starwood). Pretty good reason to keep the card.

    • Sinizter says:

Really ? That doesn’t sound right.

    • Rob says:

As I understood it (and I don’t have the docs to hand), at £15,000 you get a Starwood Gold card. This would give you double SPG points when staying at an SPG hotel, but that is nothing to do with the credit card.

      • crabolas says:

I quote: “Upgrade to elite gold preferred status when you spend £15,000 within a cardmembership year, giving you at least 4 starpoints for every full £1 spent, 6 per transaction at starwood preferred guest hotels and resorts, automatic room upgrades, late check-out and more”.

        Am I missing something?

        • Rob says:

Something is wrong there. For a start, there is NO bonus on the UK card for using your SPG Amex in a SPG hotel, unlike the US card. I think someone has done a very, very bad ‘cut and paste’ from the US T&C’s.

It is all very weird, though.

The text also implies that you get ‘4 points per #1’ because you are Gold, which also makes no sense in relation to card spend, as everyone has the same earning rate whatever their SPG status.

This text is also not part of the official terms and conditions, the only binding document.

          • crabolas says:

That’s what I thought, so I phoned amex today and they confirmed to me that if you reach £15,000 spend the earning rate becomes 4/£!

Not sure I believe them though!

          • Rob says:

If that was true, the SPG card would be an amazing deal – effectively 5 Avios per £1 beyond £15k, or 8p per £1 spent in free hotel nights. Can’t believe it works that way.

Annoyingly I chucked my glossy brochure on the SPG card a few weeks ago.

The thing is … It is not beyond Amex to be doing this and not telling people, see todays post on the Plat card bonuses or the fact they keep Cathay Gold a secret for Plats!
