Get £5 cashback on £10 Amex purchases tomorrow on Small Business Saturday

Tomorrow, Saturday 7th, is the UK’s first ‘Small Business Saturday’.  And, as American Express is the main sponsor, this is a great opportunity to rack up some decent discounts with your cards.

You will receive £5 cashback on your American Express statement for every £10+ purchase you make at a participating small business on Saturday.

Small Business Saturday

The rules are simple:

You can receive cashback from an unlimited number of shops ….

… but only once per shop per card

You need to register your American Express card in advance

Supplementary cards can be registered separately and count as a ‘different’ card

All UK issued Amex cards, whether Amex, Lloyds or MBNA issued, can be registered

The website to register your cards is here (scroll down for the link).

At first glance, the list in my area seems smaller than the last Amex ‘Shop Small’ promotion.  What I don’t know is if retailers with an Amex ‘Shop Small’ sticker in their window, but who are not on this list, will count or not.

Remember that a) many retailers will be happy for you to split a purchase over a number of Amex cards and b) if a store sells gift vouchers, it may be worth buying a number of £10 ones for future use, even if you don’t want a specific product on the day.

I still don’t understand why a tesco on the M20 J10 is included

    Any ideas?!

    • Rob says:

I get a weird feeling Amex randomly wrote to various businesses without vetting the list and that Tesco wrote back and said Yes!

      • Will says:

I will be on my way to the eurotunnel tomorrow so will pick up £10 of food and hopefully get the £5 back and MR double points (gold) and tesco CC points. Curry house when we get home for another £5 hopefully.

        Cheers

        • pazza2000 says:

I wish we had a participating Tesco near by, you got lucky. Glasgow features a significant number of takeaways and bars on the list, which to be fair is perhaps just what the people want.

          • Will says:

£10 of drinks then move bars? Finish with a large takeaway? 😉

I am lucky but also in France for most of the day so unlucky as well. Would have arranged Xmas shopping otherwise

          • Simon says:

I’ve tried to use my AMEX at one of the bars on the list near me before and been told there is a minimum £50 spend if I wanted to pay by American Express!

  • Chris says:

This is going to pay for my oyster usage until the next shop small campaign…

  • Simon says:

It’s definitely worth checking the list again before heading out, a shop I planning on making the most on my 7 AMEX cards with was on the list earlier this week but has been removed now.

    • will says:

I would still be confident in it, I had the same with a local jeweler last year, was on the list the disappeared – I went and tried the card there and it still tracked. I think from memory the email came straight through to my phone so you could check on the spot.

I’ve got 13 Amex cards and a 30 shop trip lined up. Lots and lots of good local restaurants are on the list and they are happy to give out gift vouchers.

I’m getting recognised when I return on these shop small campaigns these days!

      • Simon says:

13 cards nice! I thought I’d do as you suggested, 2 of my cards are MBNA ones and one is Lloyds which haven’t generated emails in the past so I’ll make sure I use an AMEX issued AMEX first of all and see if I get an email.

    • YL says:

I have noticed the changes, too!
At least 4 shops that I planned to go and make good use of it have now all disappeared from the list..

  • Jonny says:

Just spent a couple of hours in Muswell Hill, and took advantage of the offer in a few different places. Best places split transaction down to chunks of £10, though others wouldn’t (e.g. had to pay for 2x£15 items as 2 transactions instead of 3)

Worth checking with places to see if they accept Amex though – went to Planet Organic, which was listed, but they didn’t accept Amex (tried it and didn’t work) and just ended causing myself embarrassment…!

  • David says:

Just bought a £10 mobile top up voucher from a local newsagent and received the shop small email. Will be trying this again before the day is out.

    • Will says:

Christmas turkey, brisket of beef and fillet of beef ordered at the local butcher.

Ended up pin locking one of the cards, I guess 13 is an unlucky number after all!

      • pazza2000 says:

Odd… I’ve just used my card at two places that were definetly ‘not’ on the list at any point and received the small shop email. Is every small shop that takes Amex participating?

  • Roger says:

A variation on the ‘we don’t ake AmEx’ spiel.

Mrs Roger and I decided on the spur of the moment to eat at a local Indian. All went well until we tried to pay using AmEx cards. After some discussion, it turned out that they could only do manual AmEx transactions and the manager was about to leave. (It was past notional closing time.)

Long story short: we made 3 manual transactions. I wonder when they will post. No e-mai confirmation, of course.

If we don’t see confirmations within a certain period – one week, two? – we’ll be messaging AmEx.

  • Phil says:

Pleased I live in Brighton where 400 plus shops are taking part3x Amex and about £200 saved. All the businesses I went to were really welcoming of the custom and happy to split the bill so I could max up the £5 refund. It made Christmas shopping a fun race against the clock. Might head of to the boozer later! Yep also included

    • Jason K says:

Brighton is particularly good for small independents taking amex. Was on holiday there during the last shop small, had a good time trying all the places.

  • wizzyfax says:

Drove about 15 miles to an equestrian shop for an inlaws present and got there to be told they dont accept amex and never have done.

    Angry is not the word!!!
