Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

One year of British Airways lounge access with Amex Platinum …. you need to decide soon

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

I wanted to gently remind everyone that time is running out if you want to apply for the American Express Platinum card in order to get the free Cathay Pacific Marco Polo Club Gold card.

The last day to apply for the Cathay Pacific Gold card will be 31st March.  However, you must have your American Express Platinum card in your hand first.  This means, realistically, that you need to apply for Amex Platinum in the next 2 weeks to be certain that you receive it before 31st March.

If you are not familiar with this offer, this is how it works.

Cathay A350-900

When you take out an American Express Platinum charge card you can apply for a Cathay Pacific Marco Polo Club Gold card, valid for one year

Cathay Pacific, like British Airways, is a member of the oneworld alliance.  This means that your Cathay Pacific Gold card gives you the same benefits as a British Airways Silver card when you fly with BA.

In particular:

You can use BA lounges, even when flying economy – and bring a guest

You can use the lounges of any other oneworld airline when flying with them (Qantas, Qatar, Cathay, Finnair, Royal Jordanian etc)

You can select seats on BA flights for free

You get an additional baggage allowance (BA only)

You can check-in at business class desks

The full list of benefits from a oneworld Sapphire card (which is what both BA Silver and Cathay Gold offer) can be found here.

But doesn’t Amex Platinum have a £450 fee …..?

Yes, it does.  However, the fee is refunded pro-rata when you cancel.

When you cancel, you keep the Cathay Gold card for the remainder of the 12 months for which it is valid.  You also keep the three hotel status cards for the rest of the year – Starwood Gold, Accor Platinum and Carlson (Radisson) Gold.

There is also a very lucrative sign-up bonus with Amex Platinum, although you can only get this if you have not had an Amex Gold or Amex Platinum in the last six months.  You will receive 30,000 Amex Membership Rewards points, which can be converted into 30,000 Avios or 30,000 Virgin Flying Club miles amongst other things.

This is how the maths could pan out for you:

Apply for American Express Platinum within the next 2 weeks, to guarantee that you receive your card by late March

Go online and order your Cathay Gold, Starwood Gold, Accor Platinum and Club Carlson Gold cards (last day for ordering Cathay Gold is 31st March)

Spend the £2,000 in 3 months required to trigger the 30,000 Membership Rewards points

Transfer your 30,000 points – plus the extra points from your spending – into 30,000  Avios, Virgin Flying Club miles or whatever other programme you choose

Cancel the card after three months for a pro-rata fee refund

So, for just £112, you will get ….

So, assuming you cancel the card after three months, for a net cost of just £112 (3/12th of £450):

you will have earned 30,000 Avios and

you get the equivalent of a British Airways Silver card for a year and

you get Gold status at Starwood hotels for a year and

you get Platinum status at Accor hotels for a year and

you get Gold status at Carlson (Radisson, Park Inn) hotels for a year.

Which sounds OK to me.  A lot of people who take out the card intending to cancel actually end up keeping it, because the benefits package (which includes full travel insurance, Eurostar lounge access, two Priority Pass lounge access cards, access to Fine Hotels & Resorts deals, UK Hotel Collection deals and special Platinum promotions such as the free Melia hotel night last year) is impressive.

I’ve had the card since 21st Jan and just hit my spend limit and will be calling today to cancel or downgrade to gold for a bit (i’ll let you know the result), I used the MP card just at the weekend in Edinburgh and at T5 and did it both ways for access ie, used Finnair to get seats, did OLCI and changed back, status showed on BP and allowed me in with showing card and also tier points and avios tracked, on my return 2 days later my BP didnt show status and i merely flashed the card at T5 galleries, lounge attendent was great, asked where i wanted my tier points to post to ie, BAEC or MP club and allowed me through. Dead easy and no issues at all and all points posted to BAEC 24 hours later.

Great to know it was so straightforward! I’m more or less convinced now to upgrade from Gold to Plat, spend the £1000 to get the upgrade bonus of 15000 points and also grab the MP card. I have some flights booked where I could use the free seating choice. Then refer my partner for a Gold card, grab another 9000 points before cancelling. Thanks for your feedback.

      • Brendan Sweeney says:

I did pretty much this. Applied a few days ago but didn’t expect to be approved as my income is less than 25k. But on the app on my phone today it is showing as platinum card so looks good. I have flights coming up for me and my gf from BHD to London for a couple of days and then on to Nice so it would be nice to have the lounge access. Plus my gold was expiring in early April anyway so I’ll take the 15000 avios and cancel after a couple of months

        • avidsaver says:

          Hi Brendan
Thanks for the info. I’m also in the same boat. We have a household income of over 40k but my personal is less that 32k. Strange that the upgrade application asks for personal and yet the amex Plat page states it’s based on household income. Glad to know it worked for you at 25k 🙂 Think I will probably have to give it a go!

  • Peter says:

All looks promising, especially as flying WT+ to Caribbean in May. My one faux pas, and this is because I am a newbie. I applied for and in the process of getting a BA Premium Plus Credit Card. using that as I will pay the balance of the holiday with it to gain the bonus Avios.

If I wanted to change to this, the idea of lounge access and not paying to reserve seating is a benefit, should I cancel one and start again? Can you upgrade? Especially as it is this soon? Or maybe tough luck on me for poor judgement 🙂 We all live and learn after all.

    • Rob says:

How about getting your partner to apply for Platinum? It is based on household income rather than your own income anyway.

  • lostlamb says:

quick question , wife has the Marco Polo gold card ,will that be enough to let 2 adults and 2 little kids (under6) for galleries? .

    • Fido says:

I asked about this the other week as we’re going on hols beginning of April. Was told that they’re very strict on this and you’d each need the Gold card to bring in effectively two guests. Won’t stop me giving it bash though and asking the kids to look all doe-eyed when we get to the reception 🙂

      • Rob says:

Don’t forget that there are 2 Galleries Club in Terminal 5 (and a third on the B satellite!), so if you fail at one you could try walking all the way down to the other one!

    • Rob says:

No, technically one guest per card, except for kids under 2 who aren’t counted. Anything else would be at the discretion of the lounge staff.

  • Tim C says:

Anyone get referred when they tried to apply or upgrade? I have no idea why its happened to me . If you did get referred how long did they take to make decision.

    • Mark says:

I was. Applied for an upgrade on a Friday evening, but by late Monday my account was showing the Platinum card in place of the Gold. Whilst waiting for the card and spend on the Gold card qualified towards the bonus spend requirement.

    • scottnothing says:

My experience was the same as Mark’s. Took less than a week for my online account to change from Gold to Platinum. I hit the Gold minimum spend and received the points bonus before upgrading, then hit the new minimum spend requirement for the Gold to Plat upgrade promotion, referred another friend to Gold, transferred all the points over to BA and signed-up for all of the Platinum benefits.

In total I have netted over 50,000 MR/BA points, approx £50.00 in American Express cash-back rewards and spent zero on annual fee or interest charges. Now I am seriously considering cancelling the card!

      • wytco0 says:

I just checked my account online and its now showing as Platinum however I cant see any transactions and I can’t see any reward points so maybe its not converted properly yet. I assume my gold reward points are safe on upgrade to Platinum?

        • Rob says:

You keep the same MR account – it exists independently of your card account

        • Mark says:

I think mine was the same in the first instance, but it was correct within a couple of days.

        • scottnothing says:

It took a few days after upgrading for my spend on the “new” card to start to credit towards the £1,000 spend goal. I would hold off making any large purchases on your “new” platinum card until your AMEX online portal shows that you are working towards the £1,000 spend threshold.

  • simon says:

    Hi Raffles.

Can I upgrade from Gold to Plat- spend the money, get the card and then downgrade back to gold?

what am I looking at cost wise by doing this?

    • Mark says:

You can, and (assuming you are not currently fee free on the Gold card) the best case scenario it may cost you nothing.

Note that if you are in the first year of Gold membership you will immediately be charged the Gold annual fee (£125) if you do this. Also, the terms allow Amex to cancel your Cathay status if you cancel the Platinum. I’m assuming in practice they normally do not, but if it’s that obvious you’ve done it just to get the Cathay status for free they could enforce it.

Personally I think it’s worth spending the £1000 to get the 15,000 avios as well….

  • Col A-B says:

Thanks to Raffles for this, which I took advantage of a couple of months ago.

I upgraded from Gold to Platinum, was referred but was resolved within a week, got my Marco Polo number quickly too.

I’ve now popped that MP number into a couple of existing bookings & been able to reserve seats at no cost, then called BA Cust Servs to get them to remove the MP number & pop the Exec Club number back in so I still earn my Avios & tier points.

For 1 return trip to YVR for 3 of us we have saved £354 in fees for seating & extra baggage allowance alone. That really puts the fee for the AMEX in perspective.

*whispers* still not been charged the annual fee!

    • Mark says:

Interesting… so the seat selection is maintained even with the status that allowed you to select it removed from the booking?

      Might be worth checking that.

      • Alan says:

Yep, it’s worked that way for a couple of year now. Just add CX number on Finnair, select seats with BA then switch back to BA again on Finnair. If doing this for a redemption it might be as good to leave it on CX as that will save any issues with lounge access and may help in the case of irrops.

    • scottnothing says:

I also upgraded to Platinum and haven’t been charged the annual fee yet. I am already BA Silver but will apply for the MP card in the remote chance MP decide to roll the benefit for another 12 months. Wishful thinking I know!

      • Rob says:

Not really. I am going to apply for it on March 1st, even though I have a BA Gold, ‘just in case’. Marco Polo usually has a $50 joining fee so worth doing to avoid that.

You might, for example, want to move some Amex points to Cathay if it turned out that a specific redemption was cheaper with Asia Miles than Avios.

        • scottnothing says:

Thanks for another great tip. I will do the same on 1 March. US$50 to join a FF program is a bit steep!

    • CV says:

Not been charged the fee either, yet, expected it in the first full month.

    • avidsaver says:

Sorry but I’m confused. You say it saved money for the 3 of you. Is this with just the one MP card? Are you able to reserve seats free of charge for more than yourself (i.e the holder of the card) OR how does this work?

      • Rob says:

Yes, same as BA Silver, you can reserve free for everyone on your booking.

      • Col A-B says:

        Yes.

1 booking has 3 pax & the other has 2 pax. I’m the only person who has put their CX card details into the booking, which has then allowed the benefits to be enjoyed by everyone on the booking.

I was also having a nose at the oneworld site & if I’ve understood it correctly (at CX Marco Polo gold level – Oneworld emerald I think that equates to) this also allows everyone on the booking to have an increased free weight limit per checked item to 32kg.

The range of benefits from just the CX card is quite considerable & really highlights the value you can get.

  • Mark says:

How does the period of validity on the Cathay gold card work? I notice on the card in the picture it only specifies an expiry month.

BAEC status lasts for just over a year after the end of the tier point collection year in which you achieved the status (in my case the tier point collection year ends on the 8th February and the card expires at the end of March). Does Marco Polo work on a similar basis?

This may of course be important for anyone hold back on their application to extend the expiry date – if an application at any point in March doesn’t affect the expiry date we may all as well apply as of the beginning of March.

  • Ant says:

Am I correct in assuming that th Priority Pass is cancelled once you cancel the platinum card?

    • Mark says:

Effectively… it certainly used to be the case that you could still use it them, but Amex would then chase you for the £15/person/visit standard charge.

      • Rob says:

Today, though, most lounges have a swipe terminal which will automatically flash up if the card is invalid.
