Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Get 1,200 Avios for £5 in Tesco with ‘Call of Duty’

It’s back.  When will Tesco ever learn?  Hopefully not for a while.

On Tesco Direct, there is a very average offer for 500 bonus Clubcard points and £5 off when you pre-order a selection of new video games.  Fifa 15, Battlefield Hardline, Call of Duty – Advanced Warfare and Destiny are all included.  It’s an OK deal if you are buying it anyway, but nothing to get excited about.

However, in store, something MUCH more interesting is back.

Tesco is offering 500 bonus Clubcard points when you pre-order ‘Call of Duty : Advanced Warfare’, Destiny’ . ‘Disney Infinity 2.0’. ‘Fifa 15’ or ‘Battlefield Hardline’ for £5.  This is 1,200 Avios points or 1,250 Flying Club miles for just a fiver.

How it is meant to work is that you get a display box scanned at the check-out, pay £5, and receive a special receipt. (You don’t keep the box.)  Visit the store on the day the game is released and you are guaranteed to get a copy and you will get your £5 back as a discount.

The 500 bonus Clubcard points are credited with the pre-order payment.  You have NO obligation to actually go back to the store and buy the game on the day of release.

There is no obligation to ever buy the game when it is eventually released. This means that you can treat this as a chance to buy some Avios airmiles for 0.4p each.

You need to be very careful not to overdo this promotion. It is acceptable to buy ONE copy of each game ON EACH FORMAT per Clubcard.  For each of the five games that means you could do a pre-order for the Playstation 3, Playstation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox 1 versions, netting yourself 5,000 Avios points.

There seem to be 20 different variants available – five games across four different games consoles.  This means you can earn 24,000 Avios or 25,000 Virgin Flying Club miles for £100 per Clubcard account.

The boxes tend to be on a separate stand to the usual video games. You take an empty box to the checkout, it is scanned, but you do not keep the box – it goes back on the shelf. You will only tend to find these in larger Tesco stores.

It is possible that your local store will not have the special sticker up promoting the 500 points.  However, the points WILL go on at check-out.  Note that whilst the label in the image above does not mention that ‘Fifa 15’ and ‘Battlefield Hardline’ give you a bonus, they will.

(There is also a game called ‘Alien’ which is available for pre-order.  This is not included in this promotion and does not give any bonus points.  Do not buy any of these.)

If someone can provide the barcode numbers, it will also be possible to pay for these games at a self-service check-out in ANY Tesco store (except Express, as they have a different IT system) by manually inputting the bar code.  The problem is that all of the games except for ‘Fifa 15’ are age-restricted and a check-out supervisor would be required to approve the purchase.

This will also combine with the ‘£5 cashback for spending £10 in Tesco’ American Express deal that I posted about on Tuesday.

To summarise the above, this is how it works:

Visit the video games corner in a large Tesco store

Pick out empty ‘pre-order’ cases for any of the five games listed above, across any of the four formats

Pay £5 at check-out for each empty case you hand over.  Do not take the case home!

Your till receipt should show the 500 bonus points

Do NOT buy exactly the same game twice on the same Clubcard, whether in the same transaction or in different transactions.  If you do that you have crossed the Tesco ‘bulk buying’ line.

Anybody who walks about in Tesco holding 18 pre order boxes and nothing else is asking for a ban and their points being wiped. It’s happened before and will happen again especially now this has so much exposure. Was different 3 years ago when few people knew about it. It is always suspicious behaviour in store that causes the problems. Supervisor tells manager, manager gets anxty and ring clubcard, hands over your clubcard numbers to check for suspicious activity.

What’s the point anyway, how hard is it to go to 3 or 4 different tills in a large store and do a few at each. Just because you think you haven’t drawn attention to yourself keying 16 barcodes into the self scan doesn’t mean you haven’t. The first thing people know is at the end of quarter when the mailing doesn’t show and you have to make that difficult phone call.

    • Bob says:

Whilst I agree 18 at one till is chancing it. Going to 3 or 4 seperate tills is just as excessive as you do. Last year I had the staff order me 10 copies of the same game at the same time, no problems and the points posted fine!

  • Singing Dwarf says:

The Pre-Order coupons that are printed out at the checkout just state the format, not the game title. The barcode on each coupon is also the same for each format – it is not dependant on the game purchased.

Also, the till receipt is not (always) clear which game/format was purchased, so make sure you make a note independently of which format and game combo you purchased, if planning on going back later to pick up more!

  • Luke says:

Just called Tesco and they told me nobody will receive the points for this offer unless they take delivery of the game. This was changed due abuse. Bang goes my £20 !

    • Singing Dwarf says:

Rubbish – how would they know? The voucher is not unique to the customer and you don’t need to present your Clubcard when buying the game.

    • Stephen says:

      Sounds like B.S. to me.

    • CV says:

The next Clubcard statement date is 17th August, all of these games are released after then. So points should be banked into clubcard vouchers for conversion, so I don’t see how they can take the points back. Also, there is nothing in the TnCs about actually having to buy the game, so if Tesco did revoke the points it would result in a load of complaints to the ASA and whatever other quangos there are to complain to. And then, I just don’t think Tesco’s IT system is up to the challenge of tracking the purchases.

Tesco customer service agents often don’t know what’s going on e.g. I actually had to explain to agent about how everyone’s accounts were being hacked, so I would put this ‘advice’ down to an agent making things up.

    • shorthauldad says:

Why would you call Tesco? All you do is put this on their radar 🙁

    • Avioso says:

Please don’t tell me you called Tesco about this, It just draws unnecessary attention. However it does sound like you spoke to a duff agent.

  • cat says:

    Hello,

Can someone please let me know where in zone 1 (preferably near a tube station) where I can get these games. Just made a very unproductive trip to the Tesco Kensington on West Cromwell Road.

    Thank you!

    • Rob says:

Surrey Quays / Canada Water usually the best at times like this. Gallions Reach is a bigger store but off on the DLR.

      • thesaver79 says:

I went there earlier and bought 6. They also had some 3V cards and bought 2. The £5 voucher on electricals that someone mentioned didn’t work on my order. I also forgot to load the offer on Foursquare 🙁

        • Victor says:

you mean surrey quays or canda water?

          • Rob says:

Same store! It is directly next to Surrey Quays station but Canada Water and Surrey Quays are literally 90 seconds walk apart! No need to change to the Overground at Canada Water if you go to Canada Water on the Jubilee!

          • Victor says:

ah thankss – wasn’t familar with tha names of that area
I actually went to that store 3 times the past 2 months and there was no 3V cards at all – guess I was unlucky then!

      • Ray says:

Not zone 1 but if anyone is near Heathrow, there’s plenty of pre-order boxes at the Dukes Green store(Hatton Cross).

  • GP says:

I can just imagine Tesco provisioning the games in the stores where the preorder was taken. I can imagine a tiny express store having hundreds of copies of games being delivered on launch day.

  • Luke says:

Has anybody had the points posted to their account yet?

    • idrive says:

They will go through overnight tonight

    • Simon says:

The ones for the games I pre-ordered on Tuesday posted yesterday, they normally take 2 days to post.

  • Tom says:

Anyone know when does this offer will run out?

  • Lucas says:

When using self check-out, can I put all games on one order or do I have to do 18 (or so) individual purchases?
