Why am I going to Las Vegas this weekend?

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

I have done quite a few weekend breaks in the past which, to a normal person, would seem fairly crazy.  New York, Dubai, Cape Town … these are not the sort of places where you normally head to after work on Thursday or Friday night, only to be back at your desk on Monday.

I have considered a weekend break in Las Vegas in the past with friends to celebrate landmark birthdays, but I always rejected it as crazy.  The jet lag on a flight westwards is far more painful than flying east.  (South Africa is actually a dream weekend break destination as long as you fly business or first class as you fly overnight both ways and there is minimal time difference.)

This weekend, though, I am going for it.  Vegas, baby.

Do I plan to spend three days at pool parties?

No.

Do I plan to spend three days in the casinos?

No.

Do I plan to spend three days repeatedly watching Matt Goss from Bros in his acclaimed new career as a Vegas headline act?!

No.

I will be spending three days discussing frequent flyer blogging.

Randy Petersen, the original founder of Flyertalk, current owner of US frequent flyer network Boarding Area and all-round nice bloke has invited me to join his network of writers for their annual conference.  I am genuinely looking forward to meeting a lot of the people whose work I have read over the years.

As you would expect, I have structured the trip to maximise the new products I can try out.

Outbound, I am flying to Los Angeles on a British Airways A380.  This will be the first time that I have flown a BA A380.  I look forward to seeing how the new, slightly bigger, First Class cabin compares to other aircraft.

I will also write an article on The Concorde Room at Heathrow which I have never reviewed on HfP before.

From Los Angeles, I will be taking a Virgin America flight.  Whilst other American airlines are in a race to the bottom, Virgin America has invested in what looks like a very impressive Business / First Class hydrid short-haul seat which seems to knock anything else in the US or Europe out of the water.

Coming back, I am on the direct BA Las Vegas to Heathrow flight.  That is an overnight flight so I don’t expect much from that.  I do intend to check out the new American Express airport lounge in Las Vegas, open to anyone with a Platinum charge card.

It will take me a few days to recover from the flight, but hopefully I can get some trip reports up on the site late next week.

For the avoidance of doubt …. posting will continue as normal over the weekend!  Responses to your comments will be delayed, however, unless BA decides to install in-flight wi-fi in the next 48 hours ….

Jet lag westwards is worse than east, really??
I find completely the opposite, to USA is fine as it just a longer day, the return is much harder. I find flying to Tokyo particularly disorientating (I love Japan though). Am I the only one?

Definitely agree on Virgin America, great planes.

    • Andy says:

Totally agree. We go to LAS 3-4 times a year, probably in excess of 40 trips now. Get over the jet lag westbound in a couple of days but coming home it takes my wife about 2 weeks to recover..
      Have a great trip

    • Alan says:

Agreed, generally Eastbound is felt to be worse for jetlag – not sure if that was just a typo?

      • N1AK says:

I think it’s probably a pretty personal thing, even if there is a trend one way or the other. I had no issue flying west to the US this year, but flying back from Malaysia to the UK (also west) last year left me a broken man for days.

        • Rob says:

Agreed. Also worth noting that jetlag to California is NOTHING like the minimal jetlag you get to New York.

      • Rob says:

No, not a typo. California, for me, is worse than Tokyo. New York or Dubai, to be honest, I hardly even notice it anymore.

        • Peter says:

Yeah. My wife had a migraine for 4days flying direct to lax and I was a bit ropey. The flight lax-jfk was no prob and later back home from jfk was no probs.
I know the latter two flights were shorter but MUCH easier.

          • Adey says:

My solution for LAX is to over-refresh in the clubhouse, continue at the bar onboard until lunch, eat and then sleep the remaining hours. By the time I’m through the airport I’m ready to start again.

Coming back to the UK is far worse for me.

        • JQ says:

It seems to me that everyone is referring to different things. From the UK:

          – to NYC, it’s just a case of staying up late
          – to LAX you’ll have trouble staying up at night, but if you adjust then you’ll find it hard to wake up back home
          – to Asia, you won’t like breakfast meetings initially, but if you stay long enough then an all-nighter becomes hard once home.

So it depends if your main difficulty is getting up in the middle of the night, or staying awake until dawn.

For me NYC is painful, as the family there have a day that runs from 12pm to 3am, so just as bad as the west coast. Whereas since my UK waking hours are generally 5am to 10pm, I only need to shift forward 2-3 hours when in HKG and Taiwan!

I get no jetlag at all going to/from SFO from LHR. Going out at ~14:30 and coming back at ~19:30 is pretty much perfect for sleep – if you sleep easy on a plane anyway. I imagine it’s much harder with kids or in coach though.

        • Alan says:

Interesting. It depends on flight timing but most folk find Westbound quite easy as you just stay up a bit longer then go to bed promptly and have a good night’s sleep before being back into sync. By comparison when flying Eastbound one tends to land in the morning and have to try and make it through the day. I must say though that since doing a lot of night/on-call work I’m not as bothered by less sleep and hving a fully-flat bed makes a major difference 😀

          • squills says:

Getting 4-5 hrs real sleep makes a huge difference, I think that’s the basic reason they all made the investment (ie to keep paying passengers)

  • Alan says:

Have a great trip – the Amex lounge in LAS is excellent 🙂

    • Geoff says:

I look forward to the review, as I wouldn’t say “excellent”. I read before visiting that it was “better than most / all USA lounges but merely par by international standards”. Having visited, I would have to agree. Raffles as sampled MANY more than I have so I look forward to his thoughts.

      • AndyGWP says:

I was there last week and tend to agree with Geoff – maybe its just got over-hyped and I was expecting something ‘more’ 🙂 it is certainly better than most US lounges though, but it was very busy when we were there, and the oversized chairs not making best use of space didn’t help. It’s certainly not as big as other US lounges.

I enjoyed the beer and scran – though nothing special (though it did have names against it of people linked to Scarpetta / D.O.C.G etc) 🙂

I (personally) didn’t think it was any better than the LAX OneWorld lounge, which had a similar amount of food choices, but had local beer on tap, and a self pour selection of wines etc – as well as a hot dog making stand, and a taco making stand! 🙂

Hope you manage to find a seat Raffles! 🙂

      • Alan says:

It clearly beats standard US lounges. I’d say it’s better than the vast majority of European outstation lounges too. Proper hot food and reasonable drink selection. Not amazing by any means (I’d put the Wing and similar more in that group). I was perhaps just particularly enthusiastic given how dreadful the previous LAS PriorityPass offerings were 😉

  • Robert says:

Have fun! where are you staying?

By the way, why not fly back from LAX as well and try AA, or have you tried their new 77W product already?

    • Rob says:

I need to get straight back as my wife is off to Spain for a business trip on Monday.

  • Mr Bridge says:

    say hi to elvis

  • Blackberryaddict says:

Raffles, Are you flying out today or tomorrow? I’ll be at LHR tomorrow as well

    • Rob says:

I am here now, awaiting the delayed 09.40!

      • Blackberryaddict says:

Okay – safe travels then. I’ve got the Aviation Club lunch today, and then off to Routes in Chicago tomorrow.

  • Nicola says:

We are going the following weekend! We are using our 2 for 1 BA voucher for the flight but going via New York for a couple of nights. Then Virgin America premium (or whatever it is classed as) for the internal flight. We are using our ihg visa free night voucher plus points for 3 nights at the Venetian. So look forward to your reviews before we go. We have managed to get a club world flight using the 2 for 1 voucher so feel we have done well with our points spending this year!

  • Arabmoney says:

and here i thought you’d be watching the Mr Olympia body-building show

  • Froggitt says:

If you try out The Gun Store on Tropicana (great fun BTW), don’t blow the instructor’s head off.

    • Andrew (@andrewseftel) says:

When I was there, I got the impression that they could take you down before you had a chance.

      Great fun though!
