British Airways still offering £250 / 50,000 Avios for ‘old First’ – as I found out

Back in December 2013 I highlighted the new British Airways policy for people who find themselves in ‘old First’.

British Airways had launched a generous (in my view) compensation scheme. On most routes, you were being offered a £250 British Airways voucher or 50,000 Avios points as compensation.

For reference, this is the new BA First Class seat:

However, there still a chance that you may end up with this:

Yesterday, that is what I got on my way back from Las Vegas.  I took the 50,000 Avios points, in case you were wondering.

I was also given this:

…. as additional compensation!  The Grand Siecle alone (far left) is £100 per bottle at your local Majestic Wine.

What was a little disappointing was how the other passengers in the (full) First Class cabin were treated.  I told the guy next to me in 1K what I was doing and he did the same (but he didn’t get the champagne).  The guy by the window in Row 2 had a mild fit when he saw the size of the TV screen, called for the Customer Services Director and made his feelings known – he also got compensation (but, again, no champagne).

However, no-one else got anything.  Whilst we were all waiting for the transit from T5B to T5, I did a quick survey of the other First Class passengers and they had not been pro-actively offered compensation.  To put it mildly, they were a little surprised to realise it was available.

The lesson appears to be that, if you find yourself sitting in the old First Class seat, speak up as quickly as you can.  I recommend doing it whilst you are being shown to your seat so that you can get the paperwork filled in early.

Whether you decide to educate the rest of the cabin on what is on offer is up to you …..

This problem will naturally go away by itself in a few weeks.  From late October, the old First Class seats will be sold as part of the Club World cabin.  No First Class seats will be sold and Club World passengers will be able to book directly into the old First Class seats – which is not a bad deal.  Selected flights to Cape Town, Vancouver, Phoenix and Las Vegas will be impacted.

    Any chance the offer wasn’t mentioned to the others because they were op-ups?

      Some would have been. Others would have been on the BA ‘pay for J, fly F’ promotion. However, it was not working that way. If you complained, you got it. If you didn’t, you didn’t. The guy who was shocked by the size of his TV was offered the compensation on the spot, before they had time to go back and check his ticket status.

        I didn’t believe that was the case – I thought the compo wasn’t given for invol upgrades, which would be fair enough. Back in the day of the cards you filled in, everybody got a card, but only people booked into the cabin (whether paid, redemption or UuA) ultimately got the compo – at least according to reports on Flyertalk.

    Then that annoys me if they offered it because of who you are. I used to look at another travel blogger as he did similar trips to me and had the same status in hotels, airlines etc (and still does). I used to think- oh yes- that was what I got when I stayed at XXX so I can expect YYY etc

    Now his experience is non-standard because of who he is and it is all- I checked in and my entire party of 97 was upgraded to the presidential suites whilst the manager massaged our feet in precious oils and personally sang us lullabies to get us to sleep etc. His experience is now non- standard and to me invalid as I can no longer equate it.

    I am sure that you are not DYKWIA but I don’t think they should be YWKWYA (yes we know who you are)

    It was actually a CSM you spoke to as this is a mixed fleet route!

    I believe the policy is to proactively offer to customers that are not satisfied with the cabin.

    Staff passengers of course would not be eligible. Those on staff travel accompanying a working crew member on that flight tend to be upgraded to First after the doors close.

      They do this so that nobody “officially” knows about it…. Because this is not the official BA staff travel policy. It’s also makes the CSM liable for disciplinary if anyone raises a complaint and this is found to have been permitted by them. So probably not a brilliant idea of you to have posted this fact. All it does is give readers the wrong idea that this is a normal situation which I can assure you it’s not and ultimately just adds yet another nail to the perception of mixed fleet crew as not sticking to the rules and regulations which are in place to maintain the fairness of all.

    I was on the same flight back from LAS 2 weeks ago. Due to a last min change at LHR we ended up with (probably) the same OF aircraft. The moment the seat belt sign went off after take off the CSD was round like a shot. She was very apologetic to everyone and took details advising everyone would get 50k points compensation.

    Again the cabin was full, out of the 14 seats, 3 were stuck bolt upright and a few (mine included 1k) would only recline as far as a ‘W’ position. My wife and I were on redemption tickets so assumed others were either paying! or staff/upgrades.

    Never any mention of the £250 and not a bottle of bubbles to be seen anywhere!

        Nope.

        I considered myself lucky that I could get somewhat horizontal. One of the 3 seats stuck upright had a rather tall chap sat in it. He was furious that he could not sleep (think he was some sort of extreme sports person as he was pointing out he had an event when he landed). He could not even move down to Club but I could not hear the reason as to why.

        From what I saw he got the 50k offer as well.

          Tom, do you recall which seats were stuck upright? I’m flying that cabin/route in a couple of weeks and would like to try and avoid those seats if possible, in case I end up on the same aircraft! Thanks

            I was in 1K and along with the chap in 1A we both had to use a lot of strength to force the seats into some sort of sleeping position. On mine you could hear the motor slow down then stop.

            Seats that stayed upright were 3A/5A/5F

            I understand why people go for 1A/K but if you have the same aircraft as we did, then I suggest you avoid. It was so bad it could easily ruin your view of BA!!

    I got an old first class seat from LHR-Newark last year. I complianed saying I’d prefer business which was renovated. i don’t know if that promo was running last year but I was pretty pissed off. The crew said and did nothing. typical.

    WAYYYYY OT here but thought I’d share:

    Just moved to west africa so I’ll be flying most stranger routes than from London. Just got done booking a trip to the Maldives from JNB. Booked the outbound leg on Qatar in J on a 787 to DOH and A320 with the new business class setup to MLE. Used 130k avios for the pair of us and ~250gbp.

    For the inbound, I used 90k AA miles (from 2x SPG 20k bonus, + the American bonus earlier this year which gave us around 100k AA miles total based on previous points in SPG) to fly Etihad MLE-AUH-JNB. The AUH-JNB flight says it’s on a Jet Airways configured aircraft, but the seat chart looks like it’s still an EY A332. either way, the Jet a332 business seat has great reviews, so i’m not fussed either way. the most amazing thing was that the EY seats only cost $25 per person to book the award ticket! The $35 p/p phone booking fee was higher than the actual award ticket fees! The AA agent was great and didn’t have any problems booking the EY flgihts. It took about 6 hours to get the e-ticket via email, but that’s no big deal.
