Hit your credit card sign-up bonus by buying ‘no fee’ American Express gift cards

I have written before about the range of American Express gift cards. They were not, to be honest, fantastic value.

However, they are now looking VERY INTERESTING if you have a spending target to hit on a new credit card. And if you don’t have a card with a spend target to hit, this might be a good time to apply for one!

Here is the official site for Amex gift cards.

American Express is currently offering gift cards with NO purchase fee and NO delivery fee.   You can buy up to five cards per order which means a maximum of (5 x £100 gift cards) £500 you can spend at a time.

You need to use promotional code AMEX4 to get the purchase fee and postage deducted.  The offer runs until 31st December.

Without the fees, you are effectively buying Amex gift cards for face value.  The standard fee plus postage on a £100 gift card is £3.95 so this is a substantial saving.

Amex accepts Amex plus Visa and MasterCard for the purchase of these cards.  The payment almost certainly goes through as a ‘purchase’ rather than a cash advance, because Amex would need to disclose it otherwise.

The most obvious use of this promotion is to bring forward spending in order to hit a time-limited sign-up bonus on a new credit card. If you would struggle to spend £2,000 in three months to get the 20,000 point (=20,000 Avios) Amex Gold bonus, for example, you can simply buy the difference in Amex gift cards.

The cards can be used for normal spending at almost everywhere that accepts Amex cards. If you end up with a small residual balance of a few pounds, the easy way to cash it out is to buy an Amazon gift certificate (via the Head for Points affiliate link if you like!) and add it to your Amazon account as a credit against future purchases.  Amex will also refund the balance of a gift card by cheque or bank transfer if you make a formal request.

Note that Amex gift cards can only be used in the UK.  They can be used for physical and online transactions but you cannot use them to obtain cash from an ATM.  You need to use up the balance on the card within 12 months otherwise a £1.50 monthly fee will kick in.

These are the main credit and charge cards which require a four-figure minimum spend to trigger the bonus and which may now be more attractive to you than they once were.  You have until 20th December to order your gift cards so there is plenty of time.

Guys (and gals) don’t forget that Amex are more than happy to refund the balance of the Gift Card into your bank.
I did this last year and had no trouble getting rid of my 3V after the NS&I collapse.

    • dynamo says:

How do you apply for that?

    • whiskerxx says:

Garry – care to explain what these cards have to do with getting rid of 3v?

    • CV3V says:

Sounds like you used 3V to buy Amex gift cards, and then asked Amex for a refund?

Cost neutral whilst no fees on Amex gift cards. But can you buy Amex cards with 3V (financial transaction)?

  • dynamo says:

Can you cycle these through NS&I like you can with the fee versions of the visa gift card?

Or is there another way to cycle them?

    • Garry says:

No, NS&I do not take Amex.
I emailed them to ask this and was told no, despite mentioning a 4 digit security number.

  • Adam says:

Point taken I got carried away in the moment. Although to correct Diane above 3V gift cards can be used anywhere that takes visa not just online, the only issue is if a merchant doesn’t want to accept a card without a chip.

    • ComeFlyWithMe123 says:

Have you actually got this to work? It heavily promotes online use on their website with no mention of face to face transactions.

    • TimS says:

Adam, I don’t see how you can use 3V anywhere other than online as the Visa number is only generated on registration and doesn’t appear anywhere on the physical card.

Are you getting confused between (fee-free) 3V Virtual Visa cards and the Prepay Visa cards (that carry a fee)?

    • Singing Dwarf says:

They cannnot be used anywhere online – despite the claims on the packaging. They cannot be used for financial services transactions, or where the merchant employs the Verified by Visa security method.

Theoretically (and in practice) If you have a ‘friendly’ local shop, you may be able to use them in a shop – but where you don’t know the cashier, you are unlikely to be able to use them this way. The Visa number is ‘virtual’ – i.e. you don’t get a physical card with the Visa number on it – walking into a shop with a Visa number and CVV code written on a piece of paper is likely to invite accusations of fraud.

  • JDuncan says:

I tried using these to buy amazon gif cards last year – if i remember correctly – you cannot buy amazon cards with these – as you are seen to be buying another gift card with what is essentially a gift card – i think Amex block this.

    • Polly says:

Yes you can buy amazon drift cards with 3v, it’s one of the best way of earning avios!

      • JDuncan says:

I know that you can use 3V cards with Amazon Gift Cards; you just cant use Amex gift cards to buy Amazon Cards 🙂

  • Mark2 says:

Slightly off topic: I have just noticed that on the recommend BAPP page it says ‘You can earn up to a maximum of 45,000 Avios per calendar year by referring your friends’ whereas on the recommend Gold Preferred card it says ‘You can earn up to a maximum of 90,000 Membership Rewards points per calendar year by referring your friends’.
Does anyone know if there are separate limits for the different types of card?

    • Rob says:

The two BA cards are grouped together and you can earn a max of 45k in referrals between the two. Only a BA or BAPP cardholder can refer for a BA or BAPP.

Plat and Gold are grouped together and you can earn a max of 90k in referrals between the two. Only a Gold, Plat or Green can refer for a Gold, Plat or Green.

SPG card has a max of 25k in referrals. Only an SPG Amex cardholder can refer the SPG.

These are annual limits. Once you have hit your cap, you will not earn any further referral points BUT you can still refer people and they WILL receive the higher bonus.

      • Mark2 says:

Thanks for explaining that Rob. I can see it now.
Since I was logged in to my account I assumed that it would only offer me valid options (silly me).

  • AG says:

How can I maximize this offer?! I tried sifting through the T&C’s but I’m in work and don’t have the luxury of time. Please point out any flaws or workarounds for my devious plan… Granted I may not even get to implement it. Assuming I purchase 5 x £100 GC using one of my AMEX cards…

    1. Could I use these 5 cards to pay the bill of the AMEX or MBNA card I purchased with directly?
    2. Could I cancel them to request a cheque and payoff the initial AMEX bill?
    3. Do you have any other more immediate ideas?

    • Rob says:

      1. No, I don’t know of any credit card which allows payment by Amex
      2. Technically you could but Amex could take weeks to process the refund

  • Alvin says:

“Amex will also refund the balance of a gift card by cheque or bank transfer if you make a formal request”

Can you elaborate on this Rob 🙂 I think this bit is decisive!

  • TomTom says:

*** 20% off gift cards in Tesco until SUNDAY ***

Another way to hit the bonus would be to buy from Tesco either H&M, Pizza Express, Monsoon or Accessorize gift cards (great if you already shop there). They are currently 20% off AND can be combined with the ‘£50 of gift cards = 150 clubcard points’ offer + stack with an Orange 2for1 at Pizza Express for more reductions!

    1. Use AMEX Gold to buy £50 of Pizza Express vouchers (150 Tesco CC + 100 AMEX if first year)
    2. Visit Pizza Express and use an Orange 2for1 voucher
    3. Pay bill with gift card

    • CV3V says:

and then add in the extra 100 points on gift cards via coupon in Tesco magazine.

      • Mark2 says:

as long as you can find some magazines.

        • CV3V says:

Just read on Paid to Shop that someone took 100 copies of the magazine yesterday! I felt bad taking 2!

          • Mark2 says:

I have got a double-sided colour laser copier at home.

          • John says:

I just photocopied them last year, didn’t have any problems – one copy per 3v, so 2 per £100. Best not to buy more than four 3vs per transaction though, to avoid activation issues.

    • TimS says:

I think you will need to make sure you buy £50 of vouchers AFTER the 20% discount in order to get the normal 150 CC points (ie £60 face value of gift cards)
