Free Qantas Gold (ie BA Silver) if you have any other Gold card …. with a catch

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Australian airline Qantas is offering to match Gold cards issued by any other airline into the Gold level of its Qantas Frequent Flyer programme.

Because Qantas is a member of the oneworld alliance, your Qantas Frequent Flyer Gold card will have the same benefits as a British Airways Silver card – including giving you British Airways lounge access.  It will also get you status benefits, including lounge access, when flying Emirates.

(Qantas Gold does NOT give you the same benefits as British Airways Gold because Qantas uses a different scale.  Their cards go Silver / Gold / Platinum – plus Platinum One – instead of BA’s Bronze / Silver / Gold.)

There is a catch.  You must be a New Zealand resident to take part.  That is not insurmountable ….

If you have any friends or family in New Zealand, you may be able to temporarily move in with them.  Perhaps your employer has an office in Auckland which could forward your new membership card for you.

Head for Points readers with more cunning minds will be able to come up with some other options as well.  I once managed to get a status match aimed at Italians …..

You can find full details of the status match, and the application form to complete, here.  The only card they will not match is Emirates Skywards because of the joint venture deal they have with Qantas.

In an odd twist, though, residents of New Zealand and Australia are not allowed to join British Airways Executive Club.  This is due to a deal which Qantas and BA signed a long time ago.  It is not clear what Qantas will think of New Zealand residents trying to get a match from BA cards!

You have until March 16th to apply.

You can learn more about Qantas Frequent Flyer here.

PS.  Etihad is also offering a status match at the moment.  I will cover this tomorrow.

I wonder if Amex Plat will ever re-sign with say Marco Polo or something similar again?…

    • Rob says:

Unlikely. That was an amazingly lucky deal if you lived in the UK (it was a globally arranged promo). Even if Amex pulled it off again, it would be with someone like Etihad, Emirates or perhaps even a member of SkyTeam or Star Alliance – ie not hugely useful.

The only airline I can see being up for it which would benefit us would be Qatar, and that is still a very long shot.

  • Matt says:

The Turkish Airlines status match is also still going well – matched my soon-to-expire Aegean Gold to Turkish Elite for 2 more years of Star Alliance Gold benefits. May be of interest to some.

    • Rob says:

Turkish is excellent BUT you need to match a card from a major alliance. I want to do it again but I only have Virgin and Etihad alongside BA (which I have already matched).

    • Alan says:

Ohh – that is interesting, didn’t realise they did that. My A3*G expires the end of this year (free from BD*G) so would be good to match to TK again. I wasn’t clear from your post, Raffles – they accept BA, do they accept VS and EY too? Do you know if they will re-match an existing account or do you need to open a new one?

      • Rob says:

Turkish will only accept a Gold from an airline in Star Alliance or oneworld or SkyTeam.

        • Alan says:

Excellent, have OW and *A so no issues – will give me another two years once A3 expires. Will try and leave it another six months and hope the offer is still going…

    • Lady London says:

Was there any reason you chose Turkish over Aegean for a further two years, Matt?

  • mikeact says:

They gave me 3 months, and that’s it, unless I fly a ton of miles with them.

Offtopic: Is NS&I now declining 3.95 Visa gift cards?

    Hi Raffles

I attempted today to pay a (£3.95 fee) Visa gift card into an NS&I Direct Saver account but was declined.
The card was registered and the balance confirmed as £50.
I also attempted to pay in an unregistered card, with the same result.
A third card from the same batch was used to purchase an Amazon gift certificate successfully.

    Is this a new development?

Yes its been this way for the past week or so. Looks as though this avenue is now dead.

    • Rob says:

It does appear to be dead. A couple of people have raised this over the last 2-3 days. I am just waiting to see if it is a glitch or permanent.

  • Shayele says:

Just musing. Could I use just any address in new zealand (never receiveing the physical card) then change my address and reorder card?

    • Jon says:

I doubt it. When the card pack is returned to sender, Qantas may cancel account or status match.

  • Airline Status Match Master Thread: 2013-2014 - Page 69 - FlyerTalk Forums says:

[…] Here is the link for the new Qantas (one world) status match promotion which is on until 9th March. They seem to be matching all gold cards, except for Emirates. Only valid for NZ residents, although you may find a way to receive it… See also this. […]

This is very good news.I’m going for it .Thanks for sharing .

  • Ben says:

Is it not simpler to status match to air Berlin via gulf air? Unless there is a benefit with Quantas Gold I don’t know about.

    • Rob says:

As you say, AB requires you to go via Gulf Air. Qantas is easier if you have an address. I will cover the AB match soon though.
