Just a reminder that, as I originally wrote on Sunday, the latest batch of IHG Rewards Club (the Holiday Inn, HI Express, Crowne Plaza, InterContinental etc group) PointBreaks redemptions will be open for booking this afternoon.  It is usually about 2pm.

These rooms are a fantastic deal.

All of the 190 hotels below will be available for just 5,000 IHG Rewards Club points per night from this afternoon, saving up 25,000 points per night in some cases.

PointBreaks availability is very limited so book ASAP if you are interested, as soon as bookings open up this afternoon. Bookings are refundable as with a standard reward reservation so there is nothing to lose.  IHG works on US time so I would not expect the offer to be available until mid-afternoon today in the UK.

You can book via the IHG PointBreaks page here or via the standard booking page here.  If the PointBreaks page has not yet been updated, it does not necessarily mean that the special deals below will not already be bookable – do a search on the hotel you want to check.

You will be able to book these hotels for dates up to January 31st.

Under the new PointBreaks rule, you allowed a maximum of two bookings per individual hotel. Each booking can be for as many nights as you want.

Remember that if you attempt to amend your booking later by dropping a night or two the whole booking will reprice at the full rate.

Here are a few key properties I highlighted yesterday:

Crowne Plaza Heythrop Park near Chipping Norton.  This is meant to be a decent property for a weekend break in the country, with a pool.

Holiday Inn Express hotels near Birmingham (Star City) and near Manchester (Manchester East).  Some people may find it cheaper to move in there for a couple of months than continue to pay rent!

The Lille property may make an interesting base for a Eurostar weekend break

Bilbao sounds interesting but the hotel is by the airport which is not ideal.  The Berlin property also seems rather remote.

The InterContinental in Cairo is interesting but that is a challenging place to visit at the moment, to put it mildly.

The Holiday Inn Vilnius is back on the list and does seem to be in a good location although I imagine it could be rather chilly.

The Holiday Inn Resort Bali Benoa in Indonesia.  If I had nothing else to do, spending a couple of months there at 5,000 points per night would probably not be a huge hardship.  This is not an expensive resort to book for cash, however, so it is not a ‘bargain’ in that sense.

    I’ve got to say, the recent 5,000 point redemptions have left a little to be desired. No doubt they’re still a decent deal, but there hasn’t really been anything spectacular for a while now.

      Has there ever been anything spectacular? Surely, the hotels on the lists are ones that wouldn’t normally be booked… These deals are great for those who have to be in those particular hotels anyway, but there’s less attraction for others.

        There has never been anything in Central London or New York …. but even if there was, the allocation of rooms would go so quickly your chance of getting one would be minimal anyway. The current system has its merits – I know some people plan European weekend breaks around PB availability!

        It’s luck of the draw… this Saturday we’re staying at the Holiday Inn T5 from the last round of Point Breaks – we’re going to a christening nearby, and it’s a decent enough hotel which for the equivalent of c. £25 is a bargain.

          True. Of course, at the weekend, you can get the Heathrow Ibis for 25 pounds, too. But yes, if you need to be where the hotels are, they are a great bargain.

        Over the years , i have been pretty lucky with point breaks ! IC Berlin, in their newly renovated rooms, the Crowne Plaza Milan , newly opened ! I do agree there has been nothing to shout about for a long while now tho..

          I remember booking a dirt cheap Spanish HIX for The Big Win (in a Madrid suburb, it was €40 I think) only to find it was on PointBreaks at the time – not that it would have helped, of course.

          I am at Helsinki Airport next month but given that I land well after midnight I can’t face swapping the Hilton (in the terminal, on points) for the HI (bus required, 5k PB). Even if I was prepared to do this, my Accelerate targets are so soft (80,000 points for 4 x 1 night stays) that it would still make more sense to pay.

        Good question: would a hotel ever be a destination in itself? Obviously, they can be luxury on earth, in the sun.

        Not for me, which is partly why I wish all the Dubai/ UAE holidaymakers the best in the world but I am glad to say I will never go to the Middle East again.

          Plenty of hotels at the top end are destinations in themselves. Take Aman as the most extreme example, where a dedicated crowd visit them all regardless of location. It is rare that we leave the hotel at places such as Four Seasons Hampshire, Chewton Glen etc, except potentially for a stroll down to the pub / beach.

            True but self realisation is important here – the main reason we left Australia/ NZ (they’re great) was because we recognised we are European and need to be surrounded by our wonderful European culture & history.

            OK a holiday is only days or weeks. But I just couldn’t bear to voluntarily spend a future day of my life in any of UAE/ Q/ SA – soul-less places, incredibly awful in most respects (away from the plate/ sun/ sea etc). Unfortunately I had to spend 6 months in Q for work, but at least the experience as a younger man shaped me & made me realise: never again.

      You can buy them for $35 via the ‘cash and points and cancel’ trick so logically no more than that (£23 or so). I usually say 0.5p.

      Oyster, you need to work out your own value otherwise the decisions you take may be incorrect.
      The value of 0.5 p/point implies that you would pay GBP 250 of your own money per night for a hotel that would cost 50,000 points per night. If you wouldn’t pay that in cash then your value would be lower. I generally value an IHG point at 0.3 p/point but the point is that the value should be your own.

        ‘Worth’ and ‘cash saved’ can be two different things, I agree. I would pay £250 a night for a five star in, say, New York so ‘worth’ and ‘cash saving’ are the same to me. If you would never spend over £100 a night on a hotel, then your 50,000 point room at InterCon Times Square may be ‘worth’ £250 but your cash saving is only the £100 you would otherwise have paid for a 2-star nearby.

          It’s not so much whether you would pay £250 a night on a 5-star hotel – more whether you would pay that for an Intercontinental. If I had £250 a night to spend on a NYC hotel, the Intercontinental would be far down my list. The same is true in London – for that sort of money, you can get something MUCH better than the Intercontinental on Park Lane – especially if you don’t have any kind of decent status. In San Francisco, on the other hand, I would pay £250 for the Mark Hopkins – though that is very much the exception.

        Can highly recommend timeanddate.com for these sort of queries – superb info on pretty much every country in the world and can work out equivalent times in two locations on future dates too if trying to plan Skype calls, etc!
