News in brief:

No1 Traveller deal on Groupon

Airport lounge group No1 Traveller, whose facilities I have reviewed positively many times on HfP, has an offer on Groupon for the next few days.

For £22.50, you can buy a pass for one of their Heathrow or Gatwick locations.  For £25, which is the best deal, you get a glass of champagne included.  The Groupon link is here.

To be honest, though, for most people these offers can be beaten.  The exceptionally generous deal they have with Avios (ie avios.com, not British Airways Executive Club) is still running.

As I outlined in this article, you can get in to any of their lounges for just £20 and receive 750 Avios.  You don’t get a glass of champagne included but I think most HfP readers would accept the trade off.

The photo below is of Gatwick South, which will be replaced in a few weeks with a substantially bigger and substantially more impressive facility – I am hoping to review it when it opens.

The sales are now on

I doubt anyone is going to top the Avis £2 car rentals as the Christmas sale bargain of the year, but my inbox is full of alternative options.

I am not necessarily recommending any of the following, except for the fact that the companies involved bothered to get in touch to tell me what they were doing:

Lastminute.com – up to 50% off their ‘Top Secret’ hotels (ends 18th January)

Singapore Airlines – business class deals to 8th January, economy and premium economy deals to 31st January

Hotels.com – ‘up to’ 50% off, book by 25th January for stays until 31st March

LateRooms.com – save up to 40% (Macdonald Hotels seems particularly heavily discounted) (ends 20th January)

I have also written in details before about the current British Airways sale, the current Hilton sale and the current IHG (Holiday Inn, Crowne Plaza etc) sale, which are the most popular amongst Head for Points readers.

More Luxury Travel Diary auctions closing

Finally, the Luxury Travel Diary site has another wave of its luxury auctions closing this week.  These are often worth a look as there are often deals to be had.

Packages closing soon include 5 nights for eight people in Bali (something you won’t be redeeming using hotel loyalty points in a hurry), 7 nights for ten people in a villa in Mallorca and – more in the HFP line – two nights at the Grand Hyatt in Singapore.

As usual, it is worth having a poke around to see if anything takes your fancy.

There are sales on AY and TK I believe,. I recently priced EDI-BKK return business class at about £1400 and £1200 respectively so anybody looking for a bargain might want to try their exEU fares.

    • tony says:

Yep – blinding AY sale at the moment. £1280 LHR to HKG leaving after April 1st I think.

    • Leo says:

AY is always about £1433 LHR-BKK, is it dearer from EDI?

      • James67 says:

I don’t know Leo because I just checked my specific dates as I’m mostly fixed up for 2016 already. That may well be the regular fare from EDI too, perhaps my dates just fell outside the sale. Checking AY homepage there does seem to be a sale on though as Tony notes. Considering even the exidting products, let alone the new a350, AY offers amazing exUK premium cabin value. For comparison, my partners last BA CW redemption EDI-BKK return cost jusg over £1070 plus 111000 avios (one way was UuA) puts this value and the current shortcomings of avios in a stark context. If you are wondering why I did the BA redemption, it was because my partner, for reasons I cannot understand, still has a softspot for BA and its PE-like CW.

Just finishing off a couple nights in the Crowne Plaza in Bruges. Brilliant deal and the check in clerk couldn’t believe the rate we got for the room.

  • Nick M says:

OT – re SPG increased signup offer

The usual “spend xx before xx” countdown wasn’t showing on my account, so I called amex and it turns out my promo didn’t track..they can do it manually but involved uploading a pdf of the email. Might be worth checking for others.. (I applied on the day I received the email & there was also a technical issue with the application not accepting SPG number)

    • Leo says:

This is my first Amex – I can’t see “spend xx before xx” on my account page. Whereabouts should I be looking? Otherwise should I phone Amex – I do have the email etc.The SPG number was accepted straight away.

      • James67 says:

Usually centre right on the main card landing page once you are signed in to your card online account. Can be a little higher or lower depending what else they are showing or promoting but it’s mostly somewhere on the right nowadays. If it’s there you cannot miss it, it’s quite prominent in large heavy text.

        • Leo says:

Cheers James nothing on my account screen of that ilk -just says how many points I’ve earned so far. Phoned Amex – couldn’t help because the Accounts dept isn’t open today. Fair enough it’s a bank hol I suppose. Nice enough woman but didn’t really have a clue what I was talking about. Will call tomorrow I suppose….

        • John says:

You are correct, but this text doesn’t appear at all on some older browsers (including some phone browsers).

  • xcalx says:

Will be at Gatwick North on the 29th flying BA to TFS is the number 1 traveller lounge the best lounge option, have OW Sapphire and PP. Not used LGW for years. Thanks

    • Andrew (@andrewseftel) says:

29th December? BA Lounge is closing on the 6th. Until then not much in it between No1 and BA in my opinion, BA has Champagne No1 has better catering in the afternoon.

NB also that trains to Gatwick are hugely disrupted at the moment.

      • xcalx says:

Sorry, yes 29th December. will be at Gatwick between 11.30 and 13.30 . Using a meet and greet service for the car. Thanks.

  • Jason says:

It will work with the £20 gift card but you need to spend the discounted rate it 3 x17 to get the bonus 150 cc points 🙂

  • James says:

OT – Has anyone had their Groupon Avios posted to Iberia Plus yet?

    • Leo says:

No I had an email saying it can take up to 40 days.

      • Danny says:

The 40-days refer to the bonus Avios for going through their shopping portal. This is pretty standard for all airline/hotel-related shopping portals. In my ‘Groupon Avios’ emails, it stated 15 days, but like most things with Iberia, patience is required and they will turn up eventually 🙂

      • Chris says:

Just checked and not received avios yet BUT I did get a reply back from groupon.es in regard to not being able to validate 2 vouchers.
Seems that I got carried away 😉 and bought over 60k avios and got caught out by groupon system.
Going to try to divert them to my wifes IB plus account, if not I might be in a fight as they specifically highlighted to T&Cs 60k maximum per IB account.
        Fingers crossed.

  • Paul says:

I’m flying AUH-LHR on EY then to EDI on BA. Are there any lounge options? Am I right in thinking No1 don’t have a lounge in T5? Thanks.

    • Rob says:

There is the Aspire lounge (Priority Pass) in T5 but it is very small and you are likely to be refused entry. And it’s rubbish.

      • Paul says:

I’ll take that as a no then!

      • Leo says:

Is that still happening – the refusals I mean?

        • Rob says:

To be honest, I haven’t had any direct feedback for a couple of months.

Oddly, the last Flyertalk comment about it was back in September. It seems to have dropped off the radar of most people – perhaps everyone tried it once and then realised they were better off out in the terminal?

The whole thing is a mess. Huge % of space (in a teeny tiny lounge anyway) wasted on a handful of sleep pods. Badly designed seating which basically forces you to share a table with someone. Minimal food on the one time I went in. No self service booze which is a worry when you are in fear for your seat if you leave it for more than 30 seconds!

  • TGLoyalty says:

Havent managed to get hold of one of these magazines for a voucher anywhere in Coventry. Gutted missed out on so many bonus points

    • Liz says:

I’ve used hundreds of the vouchers and stocked up on my gift cards for next year. We have about 5 Tesco’s in my local area. I’ve grabbed handfuls of books and buying the gift cards in small batches every few days. This will be my biggest ever Tesco points haul.

My SPG card doesn’t show the “spend xx before xx” either. Just hit my £2000 target from buying more gift cards in Tesco. Will give them a call tomorrow to see about the bonus.

      • Leo says:

I think I’ll let you take this one then if you promise to report back!

      • Danny says:

I think Tesco has now removed any remaining copies from circulation.

Did you spread them out over different Clubcard accounts as Tesco has been known to remove points above the 30,000 (£300) limit?

        • Liz says:

Yes I split them between 2 accounts. Think I’ve got around 20000 points just on gift cards and I bought the Dyson hoover for 5000 pts. I like shopping in M&S and so does my mother-in-law so we will work through the £££’s throughout the year.

      • Liz says:

Just phoned Amex re my points and they confirmed I am definitely on the 20000 bonus code – last couple of transactions which take me over the £2000 haven’t posted yet so need to wait a day or two for it to kick in.
