30% – 50% discount when you buy Hilton HHonors points

Hilton HHonors is currently offering a 30% to 50% discount when you buy points – see this page and click through.  A 50% discount – and it is fairly likely you will get the 50% option – is equivalent to getting a 100% bonus!

This may or may not be a bargain as it depends how you redeem them.  If you get the maximum discount (and you won’t know what you are targetted with until you log in via the link above), you can buy 80,000 Hilton points for $400.  That is 0.5 cents each.

Regular readers of Head for Points will know that I tend to value Hilton points at 0.33p each, which is a little less than what you are paying here with a 50% bonus.

Five star Hilton, Conrad and Waldorf-Astoria hotels typically run to 80,000 points per night.  In this sale, if you got the full 50% discount, you would be paying $400 for 80,000 points which is roughly what you would be paying for a five star in a major city.  This is not a bargain.

However, Hilton HHonors IS a decent deal at cheaper point levels.   The Hampton by Hilton in Sheffield, for example (photo below) is 10,000 points per night.  At 0.5c per point – assuming you got the 50% discount – you would be paying roughly £38 per night if you bought the points.  That is a 65% discount on the typical nightly rate of £100.  Hampton properties include free breakfast as well.

On the other hand, the Hilton Sheffield is 30,000 points per night.  Even with 50% off your points, you would be paying around £115.  Whilst a bit less than the typical £125 cash cost, it is not a great deal – especially as you would earn points and miles back on the cash rate.  One upside of a reward night, of course, is that it is cancellable without penalty.

At the most extreme, you could buy the Hilton Salalah resort in Oman, reviewed here, for £19 a night assuming a 50% discount.  That would be the rough cost of buying 5,000 points in this promotion.

(Remember that if you have Hilton elite status, and you get Silver status just for taking out their free credit card, you get 5 redemption nights for the price of 4.  That takes the Hilton Salalah resort down to £15 per night!)

What I can say is that, if you got the full 50% discount, you shouldn’t lose money buying Hilton HHonors points at 0.5 cents.

If you just buying a handful of points to top off your account, the price per point doesn’t matter anyway.  If you a few thousand short of a redemption then this is a decent opportunity to top them up.

    Ever so slightly O/T 🙂 I was wondering what other folks have received when they have an issue with Diamond benefits not being recognised. We stayed at a Hampton in Cape Cod for 2 nights which was 100,000 points ,and the manager upgraded someone checking in at the same time as us (even though they had booked via a 3rd party) and did not have any upgrades for us.

    Now she is asking me how many points I fell is fair compensation. I’m not sure how cheeky I should be… Advice appreciated

      The manager will not want any info of them upgrading 3rd party stays.

      Was that a Hampton Inn and Suites?
      We are staying in one in central Vancouver next year and was wondering about an upgrade to a suite as Diamond although, as Genghis points out, it is not an official benefit.
      I am very interested in the concept of points as compensation for no upgrade.

        Haha indeed! I’d be delighted with that. I’d say 10 or 20k would still be very fair given upgrades aren’t an expected benefit at Hamptons though.

          Thanks Genghis nice vid! Yes it was a Hampton Inn & Suites, although I wasn’t that bothered about an upgrade initially – overhearing the manager upgrading someone who booked through Travelocity and being told there was no upgrades available for me… made me chance an email.

      It’s hard enough getting an upgrade as a diamond, what possible reason would a hotel have for upgrading a 3rd party booking. It is so frustrating.

        It depends on what the upgrade would have been – if you missed out on a suite then I would be pushier than if I just missed out on a slightly bigger room.

        20,000 points would be a good result in the circumstances in my view, perhaps more if the other guest got a big upgrade.

    The cash and points rates can give even better value, with the Hampton in Sheffield as an example, tonight is £77 per room or 10,000 points or £21 and 4,000 points, that gives 1.4p return per point using the cash and points rate. Just a shame the Hampton breakfasts in the UK are so poor…

          Although remember that redemptions still earn you stay/night credits with Hilton – you also get your 1000 Diamond MyWay bonus. You just won’t earn points on the cash component although you’ll still earn on incidentals.

    Similar thing happened to me, recently, I was behind a customer checking in, not a Hilton member who got upgraded I checked in, diamond, not upgraded.
    Got in the lift saw the room went back down and got upgraded however not sure the room was any different imo!!!! 🙁

      The year is calendar so status will end either end of March or April, can’t remember which.
