How to get FREE British Airways Bronze status (equivalent) for four months

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

airberlin is a partner with British Airways in the oneworld alliance.  This means that anyone who has status with airberlin will receive reciprocal status benefits with BA, and vice versa.

Why does this matter?  Because airberlin is currently offering four months of free Silver status if you sign up for topbonus, their frequent flyer programme.

Silver on airberlin does NOT match Silver on British Airways.  It matches British Airways Bronze status instead because these are both ‘Ruby’ tiers in the oneworld hierarchy.

airberlin free silver status

The benefits of British Airways Bronze status, or any other oneworld Ruby status, are not huge but are certainly better than nothing.

As per this page of ba.com you will get:

Business Class check-in desk use

Priority Boarding

Free seat selection from seven days prior to departure

This (click) is the page of the airberlin website you need to access.

If your German isn’t up to much you can use Chrome to open the page and it will offer to translate it.  However, here are the key points (thank you Anika!):

  • sign up for topbonus by 30th November 2016
  • make sure to add a company email address
  • verify your email address once registered
  • enjoy 4 months of silver status (this may take a few days to update)

Existing topbonus members can also take advantage of this offer by clicking the button in the bottom right hand corner.

If you earn 8,500 topbonus status miles or take 8 airberlin or NIKI flights during your first 4 months, your Silver status will be extended for another 12 months. In comparison you usually need 24 flights or 25,000 topbonus status miles to gain silver status.

When signing up you can also get 500 bonus miles when opting in for email offers and news.

Using your new airberlin status with BA

In order to get free seat selection, you will need to physically put your airberlin topbonus number into your booking.  If it isn’t a redemption, you will need to swap it over to your BA number at a ticket desk in the airport – and have your boarding pass reissued – if you don’t want the miles to be credited to topbonus.

For the purposes of priority boarding and business class check-in, simply flashing your airberlin card (if they send you one – hopefully it is available via their app if not) should do the trick.

PS.  It is possible that airberlin will not be too keen on lots of UK residents taking advantage of this deal and may not honour it.  If not, don’t complain.

OT stuff: Travelling Connect – just seen 8 Etihad loyalty points in my account 😀 was a bit skeptical but it did work, only hampered by my not roaming that much when I was overseas. Impressed!

  • vol says:

and On-Topic – just got a success page on the first try for TopBonus Silver. I registered using an existing account. How long will this take to be reflected in my regular account?

    Thanks again! 🙂

  • John says:

Signed up for AirBerlin through the normal site (instead of the link above) and it has given me classic status (as expected). I then clicked on the link above and it says “Registered for action” on the silver status offer page, but after refreshing a number of times, it still shows as Classic.

Is there a period of time I have to wait before the upgrade?

    • BigDave says:

same here its been 4 days now

Not hopeful I hope Raffles changed the article to reflect this

  • Adam says:

OT: Sainsbury’s currently have a “Black Friday” sale on select gift cards, 15% off a couple of different cards, but most interestingly, you can get 15% of a £25 pre-paid MasterCard, (called vanilla)after the fee is added and the discount taken you get it for £23.75. I believe the offer runs until Friday. You get Nectar points too.

    • vol says:

Adam – is that in-store or online?

      • Adam says:

Instore only. There should be little cards sticking out highlighting the cards on offer, but one store I visited had no mention of the offer. It’s the Vanilla prepaid Mastercard, only the £25 one, it’s purple with a silver glitter bow (printed).

  • Ian Mitchell says:

Does the free seat selection at 7 days out apply to Club World Upper Deck?

  • BigDave says:

    On Topic again:
Satus still classic, but the 500 points have now come through – it was at 300 yesterday
    not very hopeful on this

  • flyforfun says:

So, if my Silver membership comes through, is it worth me putting a UK to Australia trip with Cathay Pacific on TopBonus? Currently I’ve got it with BA and I’ll only get 5K Avios (25% of the trip) as its a V class booking. If I put it on TopBonus I’ll get 50% of the miles I believe (10K) and that will secure me Silver for 12 months. I know it’s only Business Class check in, but hey, checking in long haul Y counters usually involves a wait of 20 minutes based on past experience. I am comfortable with my Avios Balance so not getting the 5K Avios won’t be a problem.

Also, as my trip is in 3 weeks, if the card doesn’t come through in time, will the Silver status show on the Cathay Pacific boarding pass?

    • Scallder says:

Yes as long as your AB number is n the booking, it will show on your boarding pass – no need for the physical card for that! Haven’t flown CX in a while but certainly my BA Bronze shows as Ruby on the boarding passes

  • Josie says:

So this TopBonus website is pretty dire….
