Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

SAVE THE DATE: HfP Christmas party, Tuesday 6th December

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

I’m delighted to announce that, after four years of pestering from readers about organising a get-together, we will be holding the first Head for Points reader Christmas party on Tuesday 6th December.

We will be taking over the Dry Martini bar at the Melia White House hotel.  The White House hotel is an attractive 1930’s building situated just a few minutes walk from Warren Street, Regents Park and Great Portland Street tube stations.

This will be a great opportunity for you to have a few pre-Christmas drinks and, more importantly, to meet fellow readers and to share your travel hints and tips.

Melia Hotels International is generously sponsoring the party and underwriting a large percentage of the drinks bill.

There will also be a prize draw on the night.  One guest will win a very attractive prize from Melia – more details coming soon – and there will be a number of runner up prizes too.  (Please get in touch if your company would like to donate a prize.)

Because we need to ensure that people who ask for tickets turn up, we are charging £15 for tickets.  However, your £15 ticket covers unlimited house wine and beer between 6pm and 8pm.  Soft drinks will also be available.  We are not making a penny from this and indeed Melia Hotels International is footing the bulk of the cost.  After 8pm, the bar will remain open for cash payments for anyone who wants to stay longer.

Tickets will go on sale at 9am on Friday morning – we will publish full details in another article.  We honestly have no idea how popular the event will be but I hope that as many of you as possible can come along to meet Anika and myself and to talk miles, points, credit cards and travel with other readers.  You might even win a prize.

We are flying (on avios!) to Dubai the day after…wonder if we can move our flight to LHR a day earlier? 😀

  • Jim says:

    OT

Is anyone having trouble receiving the £100 amex credit for Naked Wines purchases that was mentioned a few days ago? Amex are stating that the offer has been pulled & they won’t be crediting the amount, despite the fact I received an email stating I had redeemed the offer.

Naked also being sneaky by billing the purchase through Amex in two instalments, despite the original order being for more than £150.

      thanks for the info

enough to dissuade me from going for the deal a second time, though I have it saved & available to my wife’s card

I did get the £100 from Amex first time with no problems

a wee mention for Lidl wines – they are in the process of dumping all the stock from various promotions earlier in the year @ very keen prices – they have an extremely good reputation for providing excellent value in wines, so when you get a wine priced originally at (say) £8.99 for £3.99, it’s a true bargain – some @ £2.99 as well

even better if you have a couple of winecarriers giving you a further £4 off per 4 wines 🙂

Hmm I’ve got this deal saved to a card too but am a little dubious about making use of it now given these reports!

        • the real harry says:

don’t forget it stacks with nakedwines.com/amex16 which is a £100 voucher – to get over £150 you have to order £250+ of wine, which eventually costs you £50

          • the real harry says:

when you hang on that website for 10 mins, it says whoa! don’t go & sends you a free delivery code valid for 24hrs wys £80 – so you could buy headline £180, use both offers and pay £80

          • Alan says:

Haha, don’t worry – I’ve kept the previous message about that 😀 Sounds like is working OK for most folk so will look again.

          • Guy says:

I ordered this weekend (after reading on here). £256 wine delivered yesterday and cash back came through this afternoon. £56 paid for 18 bottles. Cheers

    • Brian W says:

      Jim,

My payment got split also. I did get the email confirming I had redeemed the offer. I called Amex and they applied the credit manually for me. They are always really helpful in situations like this I find.

The offer is still sitting on my wife’s account. I was going to use it again but this makes me wonder if it may be too much hassle now.

      • Tom says:

Mine got posted at £150 and the credit applied correctly..

      • Jim says:

Just an update on this in case anyone revisits the comments. I called AMEX & they have pushed the issue to a specialist team to deal with & they will check with Naked Wines why it was processed as two transactions. No offer to manually credit, they will revert with decision within 48 hrs.

It was also stated on the phone call that Naked had pulled the offer & if it was saved to your card after 15 Nov it wouldn’t be honoured.

        • the real harry says:

saved to my wife’s card on 14 Nov so looks OK 🙂

          thanks Jim

          • Boi says:

How can I check when it was saved?

          • Gavin says:

I’m fairly certain naked had the same offer this time last year – maybe pulled as was on this year in error? Happy with 18 bottles for £56 anyway!

  • Mark Bates says:

Really gutted I can’t go, would be up for this another year provided knew date enough in advance but am working that day as no spare leave. I do like the idea though!

  • Diydegsy says:

Oh I wish I lived closer to London. Great bar all round especially if you like gin!!! Stayed there earlier in the year and the staff were lovely, great breakfast too but recently stayed at The Level which is the other part of the hotel supposed to be the better option but was extremely disappointed. Have a good evening to everyone that can attend.

  • AndyL says:

Superb idea! Am planning to attend but may be in Lisbon instead. Name badges anyone ?

  • BlackBerryAddict says:

Would like to have come, but in Heathrow until 6 pm that day so won’t be able to make it till 8pm or so

  • Mike says:

Great idea Rob. As one of your international followers, unfortunately, London is not in the cards (ha ha) until next year.

One thing though….surely after 8pm, it should
be a “card (or even contactless) bar” and not a “cash bar”! 🙂

    Have fun!

  • John thrussell says:

Sounds like a great idea and love thought of “secret sign” baggage tag – even if future events need to be around the country (countries?). Will the prizes be around personal good redemption stories? Only say that as writing this in great Hong Kong Qantas lounge before our Ba return flight back to LHR (outward leg was our first First, but had to “settle” for Club return) using BA amex 241. Small fry for some of your readers I know, however I don’t do any business travel.
