Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Can you no longer ring BA at midnight to use a BA Amex 2-4-1 voucher?

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

British Airways guarantees to release at least 2 Club World and 4 World Traveller seats on every long haul flight for Avios redemption.  These are made available as soon as tickets for the flight go on sale, which is at midnight 355 days before departure.

Further Avios redemption seats in Club World and World Traveller, as well as seats in First and World Traveller Plus, are likely to be made available later on.  This is a random process, however, driven by how well the flight is selling.

These seats do not seem to be immediately available via ba.com because of the way the site is updated.  They are available on the dot of midnight (or 1am during British Summer Time) to anyone who calls BA.

The problem, if you are determined to snag seats on a particular flight, is that the UK call centres are not open at midnight.

I recently ran an article to promote a website which will give you the telephone numbers of BA call centres around the world which are currently open.   It looks like you might not need it any longer.

According to a few recent experiences of Head for Points readers, the USA call centres are now refusing to process 2-4-1 bookings during hours when the UK call centre is closed.  Whether this applies to both UK and US based BA account holders is still not clear – I have heard stories both ways.

Take a look at this comment here and this comment here, for example.

The excuse being given is that this is somehow ‘fairer’.  It isn’t, because the seats become available for online booking in the early morning irrespective of whether the call centre will book them.

This means that anyone wanting to add a return leg to an existing one-way 241 booking is at a 5-6 hour disadvantage to anyone who is not using a voucher.  The latter can book online during the night whilst the former needs to wait until the UK call centre opens at 6am.

I’m not sure how this will play itself out.  I can understand that the overseas call centres are fed up with an influx of calls at midnight UK time, especially as that may be a peak time in their own time zones.

This will clearly make it harder for some people to snag the 241 return flights they wanted, but how many remains to be seen.   I don’t have any skin in this game – I have only ever once booked an Avios redemption at 355 days in advance.  As a family of four, the release of two Club World seats doesn’t excite me much.

Yes, because if you’re not using a 241 voucher you simply book online as soon as the flights are released… You can book outbound using the 241 voucher at t-355 but cannot add the return leg online when it becomes available…

OT I thought I had read on here as gold amex holder you can’t refer people for other cards anymore? I logged into my wife’s account, had her refer me. The link takes you to gold amex card, but gives you the option to pick another card. I chose SPG. My card was not automatically approved but came through a week later. The 9000 referral points in her account today. Lovely 🙂

    • mark2 says:

I got quite excited when I read that thinking that this was better than getting 5,000 points for a referral from SPG Then I remembered that you need two MR points for one SPG (please prove me wrong).

    • Genghis says:

Interesting. I thought it had to be the same reward currency?

      • rams1981 says:

that’s what I read so why i was pleasantly surprised. I was actually going to use the referral link to apply for a gold rewards card as i had thought my 6 months were up. But they weren’t and I noticed it had the other card links there.

  • rams1981 says:

OT again. Genghis – how do you get your SPG account to 20,000 points if you churn it? I assume you and your wife have separate SPG accounts and you don’t pool the points, or can you?

the 20k is the points required i think to get the transfer bonus.

    • Judge says:

Surely the most sensible solution (that would involve the least amount of trouble for BA agents, so win-win) would be to issue the 2-4-1 voucher as two one-way vouchers, which could be selected individually in this scenario, or used together if booking a return ticket?

    • mark2 says:

Unusually, and excitingly, you can transfer points between accounts at the same address with SPG. You should get at least 11,000 on one account and 16,000 on the other.
I suggest that you have a look at Starwood/Marriott redemptions before you transfer to Avios. We are getting 5 nights in a suite in downtown Vancouver at high season for 47,000 SPG points.

      • rams1981 says:

        cool, thanks mark2

        • Genghis says:

Yes – you can transfer points between accounts for people at the same address. So Mrs G gives me her points. But i’ve never transferred from SPG to BA as better value can be had for hotels.

  • Cate says:

I can’t remember the last time I optimistically clicked on a HfP article with BA in the title….

  • @mkcol says:

Anyone know if there’s an automated search I can run daily to check a certain route & date for availability eg: to see if extra seats get released later in the year?

    • Kip says:

Doesn’t ExpertFlyer do this? You may need a paid subscription though.

    • Temp says:

I think Expertflyer does exactly this (not sure if you need paid sub as not tried it myself).

      • Rob says:

BA does not put redemption seats into a separate ticket bucket, which is very rare. If they are in a separate bucket then a tool like ExpertFlyer can just go into a GDS like Amadeus and see how many seats are showing. That doesn’t work with BA.

        • @mkcol says:

Thanks Rob – I’d forgotten to add I was only looking for BA redemptions & glad to see I’m not missing a trick.

  • Kip says:

It’s interesting to see how people play the same game differently.

I would never phone up at midnight T-355 because I view the 2-4-1 as an additional, ‘nice-to-have’ flight. If I need a specific date to a specific destination I wait for sales then pay cash/part-cash with possible upgrade depending on carrier and cost.

I happen to be using a 2-4-1 voucher today. After a glamorous stopover tonight in Bath Rd, Mrs Kip & I are on BA283 to LAX tomorrow morning then returning next week from SAN. I booked the flights September-ish and there was lots of availability in both F and J to LAX. SAN doesn’t have an F cabin so we’re in J. I appreciate it’s not SYD over Xmas but there does seem to be availability out there if you’re flexible with your travel plans.

    Another OT… Sorry

Just receive my ambassador welcome pack. Well actually its not a welcome pack at all , Its a pack to say iv been upgraded from Platinum Ambassador to spire ambassador.
Weird because I have been Spire elite for ages. never have I been platinum elite.
Anyway I have got the 2 night for one voucher but no 5000 points voucher.
Also the timing was pretty good. 9even tho its the wrong pack totally) I bought ambassador status on 22nd December .

    • Flyingbee says:

Check the covering letter sent with your pack for a line in the text that gives you a website to visit and a code to enter for the 5000 points, rather than a separate voucher like the free night.

    • Seb says:

had something similar. the welcome letter mentioned the 5000 points code but it wasn’t included. Had to call ambassador line, they then added them manually to my account.

      • barry cutters says:

I called them and they said its a diferent pack and I can expect my joining pack to be sent out soon. I did receive a 2 for 1 weekend certificate , so I hope the welcome pack has one in there too

        • Leo says:

Don’t hold your breath. I have never received a welcome pack of any description – they extended my length of ambassador membership for a further 3 months after manually adding the 5000 and ensuring I could use the AMB 2-4-1. So I’m not moaning….I just don’t think they are very reliable.

          • barry cutters says:

Yea i’m actually kind of hoping that happens to me .
I have saved the 7 week date from applying in my calendar.
            Will call them after this.
I don’t know why its so difficult for them .

    • CV3V says:

Whoever sends out the welcome packs is incredibly inept. After months of waiting I enquired and was told if I ‘hadn’t yet received it they would send one out’, very carefully worded email. When it still didn’t show up (by which time I have moved address) they advised that they had tried to deliver it, but that it was to my old address and had been returned as ‘the address was invalid.’ This time I advised them a mail redirection was in place – I asked for evidence of posting, they responded they were too busy to deal with my enquiry. A pack arrived 1 week later, delivered in post, but with no code for the 5000 points.

Stayed in the IC Saigon over new year, Ambassador welcome gift was a fruit bowl, wrapped with a bow, handed over at check in desk #random #no luggage space.

  • Judge says:

Surely the most sensible solution (that would involve the least amount of trouble for BA agents, so win-win) would be to issue the 2-4-1 voucher as two one-way vouchers, which could be selected individually in this scenario, or used together if booking a return ticket?

Sorry, posted this in the wrong place before.
