News in brief:

Get money off Addison Lee rides

In response to heavy competition from Uber, Gett and Hailo, Addison Lee launched a new app in summer last year.

If you didn’t get around to trying the app yet, you can get some money off by downloading it now.

There are currently two sign up codes that will give you money off your first Addison Lee rides.

  • £10 off first ride – enter code HELLO10
  • £20 off 4 bookings (4 x£5) – enter code HELLO20

It’s up to you which code you use. Unfortunately you cannot use both and you need to choose when signing up.

You can download the Addison Lee app via this page here if you are reading this on your mobile or tablet.

Win Qatar Airways flight tickets

Qatar Airways has launched a competition giving you the chance to win 2 x Qatar Airways return economy flights from London Heathrow, Manchester, Birmingham or Edinburgh to any destination on the Qatar Airways network.

The second place winner gets 50,000 bonus Qmiles and the three winners sharing the third place will each receive an A350 model Qatar Airways plane.

You need to play a little game on this page of the Qatar Airways website in order to enter. In this game you need allocate seats to passengers by listening to their needs. Once you’ve done this you can get a further entry by forwarding the game to friends.

Economy tickets aren’t as exciting as a pair of Business Class seats, but as you can choose any destination served by Qatar you won’t have any problem finding somewhere to go.

Closing date is 24th March and you can only enter once per person.

I didn’t complete the game properly but still got entered – just FYI

  • Steve says:

Can’t see where to enter the promo code on the AL app?

  • Harry says:

It would be so much more attractive, and therefore press worthy, if airlines who run these competitions awarded Business Class awards. Sure it would cost them a minute amount more – the most is the loss of profit on two business class seats anywhere in the Qatar network which can’t surely add up to more than $10,000 – but think of the additional free publicity that would result. Most of the time the extra cost would be minimal as very few Business cabins are always completely full.

I guess it depends on the target, for these competitions they are probably targetting volume customers rather than a few high value in which case the economy seats will be a big enough draw. You will probably find that they also run competitions for Business Seats but they will be more targeted and in collaboration with someone that can get them their target audience.

Like the competition they did with us 2 years ago to win 2 business class seats!

Talking about Airport parking, I managed to book Meet & Greet at Heathrow for 3 weeks in March/April using the Purple Parking’s Virgin affiliate link for little over half the price quoted directly by the likes of Airparks, Holiday Extra and even Purple Parking (using their steepest discount code). 500 VS miles bonus on top.

OT: Just wanted to share an experience of mine that I may have been missing out on before now, so worth a comparison if you qualify for this quite, niche, bracket of points collectors. I brought £66 of fuel at Tesco, pay at pump, using Tesco “Finest” Clubcard Credit card (which must have a grandfathered points earning rate). I earned 66 Clubcard points, and a further 33 Tesco Bank Clubcard points = 99 points. My conversion rate from Tesco Clubcard to Avios is £2.50 in vouchers = 800 Avios (again a legacy from being “in the game” for as long as I can remember). I therefore, if my calculations are correct, earned 317 Avios for my spend of £66, a rate of 4.8/£. Have genuinely surprised myself as have usually done Tesco spending on AMEX to qualify for sign up bonus/241, but think I will re-evaluate my strategy now and divert Tesco spending to Tesco Credit Card. Appreciate these things don’t often get written about on here seeing as they are no longer available to the market, but I was hoping to share my experience with those longer term points collectors because we all know however long you’ve been collecting, there’s still always a surprise gem hidden somewhere!

I actually prefer Addison Lee to Uber but only if I prebook (but sometimes prebook just for 20 mins in advance). The main reason I prefer Addison Lee is that the prices are fixed before your journey so there’s no nasty surprises when you’re stuck in traffic. Although Uber fares are reasonable I don’t like the fact you can’t keep track of your fare on the move and as London traffic is unpredictable it’s good to know your fare in advance.

I find the off-peak rates they charge competitive with Uber and as you climb through the tiers of their loyalty programme you also get discounts on peak rates. I’m at their black tier and so get 30% off peak fares.

Uber wins on ASAP availability, but most of the time I can decide at least 20 mins before and pre-book Addison Lee.

O/T, but was wondering whether there are any amex offers right now for upgrading gold to plat?
My card anniversary is coming up and i’m figuring out whether to upgrade or cancel and churn.

I called up Amex CS about 3 weeks ago and was offered 15k MR points for spending £1000 in first 3 months of holding Platinum.
