Bits: new BA Copenhagen lounge, Hilton Diamond Extension live, where we’re going

News in brief:

British Airways has a new lounge in Copenhagen

A new lounge opened at Copenhagen Airport last week – “Eventyr”, operated by Menzies.  British Airways has adopted this as its lounge instead of the “Aviator’ facility which is still open.

The new lounge is by Gate 26, in the non-Schengen area, very close to where the BA flights usually depart.  A reader who was there just after it opened reported that it is “small and nicely appointed” (it is advertised as having 200 seats) with – in the morning – a small bar selection, scrambled eggs and sausages, pastries and fresh fruit.  The reading material on offer was limited to “Eurowoman” and “Euroman” however …..

According to this airport press release, entry is available to anyone on payment of a DKK 250 fee.

Hilton’s new ‘Diamond Extension’ now live

The new ‘Diamond status extension’ feature is live as of yesterday.

This is the second of the changes which kicked in last week with the major restructuring of their redemption system.  Frankly, ‘Diamond extensions’ are a very tiny dessert course (more like the free mint with your coffee) compared to that.

This is the new benefit – eligible Diamond members can extend, one time only, their status for one year, no questions asked, if they are unlikely to requalify under the standard nights or points rules.  You can apply via this page here and the deadline is 31st March.

Not many people will be able to activate this.  It only applies if:

You currently have Diamond status and have had it for at least three years (not necessarily consecutive)

and

have stayed at least 250 nights or earned 500,000 base points since you joined Hilton Honors

This is definitely a feature worth having, but not something worth making a big song and dance over in my view.

Where we’re going this week

Don’t turn up at our office this week for a coffee because we won’t be there.

The review trips we do on HfP usually need a few things to come together to justify the time.  We can’t give up 3-4 days for a single flight or hotel review unless it is somewhere one of us really wants to visit.  We have a list of hotels we’d like to try and flights we’d like to do and we look for ways of weaving them together.

Three things came together for me this week:

Jumeirah Zabeel Saray (above), a beach resort on The Palm in Dubai, offered me a few free nights for a review.  As we’re off to Asia at Easter this year instead of the Middle East, I could justify the trip.  I stayed at Zabeel back in 2012 just after it opened, for cash, and reviewed it here with mixed feelings.  A lot has changed since then and I’m keen to take another look.

I had quite a few Etihad Guest miles heading towards expiry – so it made sense to top them up via some Amex points and book myself a one-way Etihad A380 First Class Apartment down to Abu Dhabi.  I have flown this before but I’d be mad to turn down the chance to do it again.

To top it off, I’ve used Amex Membership Rewards points to book myself Emirates First Class back.  I have flown this before but not since 2008 – before I started the site – so I’ve never reviewed it.  I might even try the showers this time.

Meanwhile, Anika is off to ITB in Berlin.  This is the world’s biggest travel trade show, making World Travel Market (which I think is the biggest trade show held in London) look like a school fair.  I’ve never been because hotel rates tend to get very steep, but Anika has a sofa bed to crash on.

She will be covering the launch of the new Qatar Airways business class seat, the launch of the new Emirates A380 bar (coincidentally at the same time I will be drinking in the real thing) and whatever other surprises the industry throws up.

More on all this over the next couple of weeks – the ITB news should be up promptly but my reviews may take a while to get finished.

Looking forward to the Zabeel Saray review. Stayed in 2012 for 5 nights, Was fine but the beach wasn’t great. None of the hotels on the Palm have the waves as those on Jumeirah Beach proper.

We usually stay at Mina a Salam and Dar al Masyaf, so a newer review of Zabeel would be great!

Very nearly booked this hotel for next month, as we got offered a very good rate and they have a 2 bed room for not silly money, well not silly during school holidays, but still overpriced imo 🙁
Didn’t book it due to lack of convenient access to a waterpark! But it looked a great hotel!
So booked Atlantis again, against my better judgement, as October trip was very poor. Hopefully they will be back up to previous standards.
Did the shower on the Etihad flight on the way out to AUH so probably won’t do it this time, I expect my 11 year old will want to give it a go, as my 9 year old daughter got the treat last time 🙂

      • Jamie P says:

Regarding convenient access to a water park, Atlantis is about a 5 minute taxi ride away and I believe you are entitled to one complimentary visit to Wild Wadi Waterpark as a guest at the Jumierah Zabeel Saray which again is a short taxi journey.

Last time we visited Dubai we stayed at the Sofitel on the Palm which was fantastic, visited Atlantis Aquaventure Waterpark and had brunch at the Jumierah Zabeel Saray which was incredible. No real need to leave the Palm!

        • Yuff says:

It’s complimentary access, by shuttle, to wild wadi whilst staying at the zabeel but it’s a 50 min journey. If the Madinat had any rooms, with 2 double beds, other than a 2 bed suite which is £2k at easter, and October half term, a night we would try there.
A 5 min taxi ride isn’t a problem but when you are used to jumping on a buggy, or a boat in the case of the Madinat, in your shorts , bikini and t shirt – then getting in a taxi is something I know we won’t do as a family and for us that’s a big part of the holiday.

        • Rob says:

Good job, because getting off the Palm is a nightmare!

  • Graham Walsh says:

Looking forward to hearing about Zabeel too as that is my next trip I’m planning for next year with my young boys so need a beach. Currently in Dubai this week working and staying at the Gloria Hotel, in DIC as it’s close for work and the Metro. Nothing special but picked up a good rate on Expedia, checked me in and it turns out it’s a suite including kitchen etc. More of an apartment really.

  • Russell says:

Will Anika be posting a review of the sofa bed?

  • Henrik Olsen says:

Regarding the new Lounge in Copenhagen Airport I made this video of it (if you want more pictures of it). It is really a nice lounge 🙂

Also the fact that British Airways is a customer there is a nice upgrade compared to the old offerings.

  • Susan says:

OK, now I officially hate you guys.

  • Cheshire Pete says:

Talking of extensions, my Platinum Accor from Amex which was still showing as expiring April the other week, has now changed to December, This was slow to filter through! Happy Mondays & Tuesdays!

    • bsuije says:

@Cheshire Pete – where can you check when your Accor status expires? Have been trying to find it on the website but no luck…

  • jude says:

OT We are booked one way from Goa to Heathrow via Dubai on economy S class. Can I get an upgrade on the second leg if I transfer some reward points to Qatar? How many miles would it be and is it possible to check availability before I transfer? Any tips greatly appreciated

    • Ro says:

Are you sure you’re flying via dubai and not doha if it’s qatar, or are you flying emirates?

If youre flying qatar then its 16k qmiles to upgrade from S to business for the GOI-DOH leg and 30k qmiles from DOH-LHR.

But qatar arent a transfer partner for amex MR.

      • jude says:

Thanks for the reply it is definitely Qatar so it is probably Doha where we change. It is all academic though if I can’t transfer Amex reward points to Qatar…

  • Mr(s) Entitled says:

Is there the ability to check total nights/base points at Hilton other than calling to ask?

    • Alan says:

You can email them too – takes couple of days but they’ll send you details.

      • Mr(s) Entitled says:

I tried the chat facility. They don’t have access to the information but they have raised a ticket for me and I should be emailed the answer in 5-7 days.
