News in brief:

Win 120,000 Avios points (only 188 entries!)

Iberia Plus has launched a Facebook competition to give away 120,000 Avios points.

The answer to the question appears to be Madrid but I can’t personally verify this.  At the time of writing the competition has had a pitiful 188 entries despite being live for four days.  The chance of a Head for Points reader winning, once we’ve added another couple of thousand to that total, is therefore very good.

The prize will be dropped into an Iberia Plus account but you can move the points to British Airways Executive Club for free via ‘Combine My Avios’.

You need to enter by Monday.

Expedia moves into rail ticketing

You may not have noticed, but Expedia has quietly moved into rail ticketing.  The home page for their UK ticket sales is here.

I haven’t used it yet so any feedback is welcome.  They promise no booking fees.  My major article on ‘the best way to book rail tickets’ – which is 18 months old and due for an update soon – is here.

Etihad 15% discount code launched

Finally, Etihad is running a 15% off promotion over the Easter weekend.

You need to fly from London, Manchester or Edinburgh.  The discount is only valid on the base fare, not the taxes, so it will be a better deal when used on a Business or First Class ticket rather than an Economy ticket.

The promo code required is MORE15.

You need to book on the Etihad website here by 19th April for travel by 12th December.

How to earn Etihad Guest miles from UK credit cards

How to earn Etihad Guest miles from UK credit cards (April 2025)

Etihad Guest does not have a UK credit card.  However, you can earn Etihad Guest miles by converting Membership Rewards points earned from selected UK American Express cards.

Cards earning Membership Rewards points include:

Membership Rewards points convert at 1:1 into Etihad Guest miles which is an attractive rate.  The cards above all earn 1 Membership Rewards point per £1 spent on your card, which converts to 1 Etihad Guest mile.

The American Express Preferred Rewards Gold card earns double points (2 per £1) on all flights you charge to it, not just with Etihad but with any airline.

More ‘bits’: anyone else noticed their BAPP Avios have stopped crediting under their cards? Mine normally drop onto my ‘Avios to be transferred’ balance the day after the £ transaction posts but none this week despite several £ posted. Spoke to Amex yesterday and they say it’s a known issue. I can’t access my ‘Avios to be transferred’ detail either.

    • Balf says:

Yes, been like that since last weekend. Also noticed it has happened on my Amex Plat as well.

    • vish says:

      +1

i have exactly the same problem. I spent 3k 3 days ago, and its cleared, but avios still not appeared.

  • Dave Barron says:

Entered – entry 201! Cheers Rob and good luck to everyone!

  • Worzel says:

    Very generous of you Steve.

Would be nice if Squills or Genghis won this one as they missed out on the Avis Car Rental steal 🙂 .

    • Genghis says:

🙂 Entered. 120k avios would be a little bonus to add to the balance.

    • Worzel says:

      Meanwhile;
Steve regrets broadcasting the competition, Squills weeps over his early morning bowl of cornflakes and Genghis decides on an early afternoon large G&T in SIN, 🙂 .

      • the real harry1 says:

I might settle on an erly morning G&T 🙂

Easter Bunny about to hide the eggs for the kiddy widdies (aged 12-16) as Sunday not a good idea (travelling Monday)…

        • Worzel says:

🙂 Have a good time away.

          • the real harry1 says:

            travelling back, that is 🙂

had some decent weather out in the sun lol

had to man up & invite the wicked witch (MIL) EVERY other day even in my wife’s absence, service beyond the call etc! Today is her 7th visit in 14 days! Crazy but at least my wife is here now to soak up the pressure..poor old Gran going to pop her clogs pretty soon I fear so I thought it a bit kinder to let her see her grandkids as often as she wanted etc, no big deal really.

      • Genghis says:

The lounge booze isn’t available just yet. I can’t afford on the street prices for booze in SIN!

        • Worzel says:

Great place. 2-4-1 and enough Avios saved up- first choice destination for a return. Enjoy.

          • Genghis says:

Great place. Mrs G is loving the hawker market food. Delicious.

Given all the recent BA bashing, my flight the other day in F was great. Good onboard food (though beef overdone as always). As has been said before, the crew make all the difference and our crew were fantastic, plying us with booze.

        • Eh? says:

Flies F and cant afford drink prices in SIN? Im taking this was a F redemption?

          • Genghis says:

Of course I can afford the booze. But why pay £7 for a 330 bottle beer when it’s all you drink in the lounge in 15 mins

          • the real harry1 says:

I can drink quite a bit in 15 mins provided it’s free! 🙂

        • Daz says:

Mind you, in the Maxwell food centre and even Lau pa sat you can tank up on a 660ml Tiger or jug for a few bucks. Or a nice Steam Boat and cheap beer on Beach Road. Mmmmmmm.

          • Genghis says:

We went to Lau Pa Sat this evening. Excellent place and ended up eating with some friendly locals and had a bit of their homemade banana bread 🙂

        • Olly says:

Is it that expensive? We best use our full duty free allowance when we go then. How’s the hotel treating you Genghis?

          • Genghis says:

There’s serious price variation on beers between ok and v pricy. The Conrad is TA 3*s IMO. Will report in more detail if people are interested. Not a patch on Conrad HKG. Off to the Intercon tomorrow.

          • Olly says:

Well you’ve confirmed my thoughts on whether to not try the Conrad (unless they have a huge sale discount in the next week or two.) Their long-awaited refurbishment program remains ….. long-awaited. I’m still keen for your thoughts on IC

          • Daz says:

Lau pa sat is not a bad middle ground, good selection and quite prices for a food centre, just never go at lunch time during the working week!
The IC in my opinion isn’t in the greatest place now due to all the land reclamation but I would stay there on Points, try Chijmes and for cheaper eats try the roads across from the IC.

  • Stephen C says:

Entries will rocket up if everyone does it today. You’d be better diarising it to do on Monday

  • Rob says:

If it is statement credit based on what you spend, then yes. If you need a code then no.

  • Neil says:

So I tried to apply for the Lloyds Avios card, got to the credit check and their system froze. I have never seen this in any other card application. I called and was advised to try again – unsuccessfully. This left a search on my credit file with no outcome. I called them again and got someone who knew what they were doing. The search is being removed and he was quite apologetic. Still, lesson learned – I have read a lot on here about bad customer service and if applying for the card was a hassle, it does not bode well! It is shame, as the card is a good deal, and I have had a current account with Lloyds for years with few problems.

    • Alex W says:

Haha welcome to Lloyds, or not. I had a transaction go through 228 times last year. Took me months to sort and ended up with £300 compo. Applied for a new one this year I’ve been waiting 3 months for any Avios to credit.

    • Daz says:

I got rid of the £124 a year Lloyds card about a year and half ago. Absolute rubbish service, I spent more time on hold than I can remember. I used my upgrade voucher on a flight to YYC and didn’t bother with the companion voucher as could only be used in Economy!

    • flyforfun says:

Yep. Lloyds have to be one of the worst. Spent weeks sorting out my card and my partners. It’s like they don’t want you to have them but make it a game to see how many hoops you will jump through to get the card. Given I got a load of bonus points at the time it was worth it.

      • Nicky says:

I never had a problem getting the card but I have had plenty of problems with the card itself: Double transactions on more than one occasion and quite frankly the staff really couldn’t care. Last week a payment had been taken from my account but they couldn’t tell me who had taken it until the payment cleared and only then could they raise a dispute!!!!! Will pay off what I owe, use my voucher and get rid: too much hassle and can’t be bothered with useless uncaring staff.
