News in brief:

TAP launches flights from London City

In a surprising move, Portuguese national carrier TAP has announced a new service from London City Airport to Lisbon.   One possible reason I saw yesterday is that it is a potential prelude to a sale of TAP’s 06.00 Heathrow departure slot, which could presumably be used for an early morning arrival by a long-haul carrier.

Launching at the start of the winter timetable on 29th October, the City service will operate twice daily during the week with one flight a day on Saturday and Sunday.

TAP is a member of Star Alliance if you are considering earning and redemption options.

Generous SAS EuroBonus / Hertz deal

The SAS frequent flyer scheme, EuroBonus, has launched a very generous deal with Hertz.  If you rent a lot of cars, or fancy doing the car equivalent of a mattress run, you could nicely from this.

As you can see here, you will earn 5,000 SAS EuroBonus miles for every Hertz rental you make before 30th June, for pick up before 30th September.

There is no minimum rental period, except in the US and Canada where a minimum of three days is required.

EuroBonus is a member of Star Alliance so you could use your points to book flights on any Star airline – including the new TAP flight I wrote about above!  You can also use EuroBonus points for hotel stays – I did this last year to book a night at the 5-star The May Fair in London for 20,000 points.

Details can be found on the Hertz site here.

KLM drops free baggage for BlueBiz and corporate customers

Whilst KLM brought in baggage charges on short haul flights back in 2013, they gave an exception for the first checked bag to travellers on corporate deals or those who were members of the corporate BlueBiz scheme.

You can learn more about BlueBiz here if your company is not already a member.

This exception was quietly dropped on 1st April.  Even if your company is a member of BlueBiz or has a corporate deal with KLM, you must now pay for all checked baggage on short-haul flights

How to earn Flying Blue miles from UK credit cards

How to earn Flying Blue miles from UK credit cards (April 2024)

Air France and KLM do not have a UK Flying Blue credit card.  However, you can earn Flying Blue miles by converting Membership Rewards points earned from selected UK American Express cards.

These cards earn Membership Rewards points:

Membership Rewards points convert at 1:1 into Flying Blue miles which is an attractive rate.  The cards above all earn 1 Membership Rewards point per £1 spent on your card, which converts to 1 Flying Blue mile. The Gold card earns double points (2 per £1) on all flights you charge to it.

    Cheapest London hertz hires?

    • Rob says:

£18-£20 for one day rentals from London City etc, but these tend to require the Amex Plat CDP to strip out some insurance and to be booked via Hertz Australia.

      • Sunny says:

Can you use two CDP codes simultaneously? You need to use CDP 736686 for the offer to be valid

      • Rudy says:

I once mistakenly booked on the US Europcar site which stripped all the insurance. When I arrived they said they legally cannot release the car unless I had an US licence….

  • Drolma-la says:

I am planning three Hertz car rentals in May/June, but am unlikely to take up the SAS offer. The CDP and promotion codes required for participation would negate the amazingly low rates which are now bubbling through using AutoSlash.

  • @alastairtravel says:

The 0600 LHR departure is crucial to TAP as a feeder to their long-haul flights that leave Lisbon mid-morning (especially African destinations) I’d be amazed if they wanted to get rid of it.

    • Alan says:

But if they are doing early flights our of London City instead, couldn’t they use those as feeders?

      • @alastairtravel says:

First flight out will be 1020hrs so won’t be there in time for connections.

0700 / 0940 first return flight so might work better connecting back in from overnights.

OT booked 2 x one way reward flights in business for the easter holidays next year last night where they were released on ba.com. Had anyone recently cancelled and rebooked using the Lloyds upgrade voucher? Have the seats gone back into the avios.com inventory? Is a real pain in the ass how you can’t book 2x one ways using the upgrade voucher online..!!!

    • Kathy says:

Cancelling and rebooking is not guaranteed to work – and didn’t for me when I tried it. The flight either didn’t go back into inventory or went back on to the system at some random time when someone else was looking and grabbed it.

The flights need to be booked on Avios.com for their call centre to be able to see and amend them, I’m afraid.

Yes, it sucks that you can’t use the voucher online for 2x one way.

      • Lev441 says:

Nooo – that’s not the answer I wanted to hear Kathy! When did you try this?

I wonder if the best way to do it is book the tickets via avios.com initially paying full price for the avios then calling up the following day asking if they could apply the voucher discount to that booking?

        • Lev441 says:

EDIT – I bit the bullet and cancelled using ‘manage my booking’ online. Avios redeposited straight away and I was able to book the 2x one ways with the avios call centre. Chuffed it worked out.

          • Kathy says:

Glad it worked out for you!! It seems to be hit and miss but probably depends on the route – I was trying for the notorious SYD-LHR route.

Yes, booking at full price at Avios.com and then calling up to get the voucher applied can work – that’s what I did in the end. Though they ended up having to do lots of manual adjustments to get it to work.

  • Sussex Bantam says:

OT – I’ve just got a NatWest rewards account so forgive me if this is already well known but there is an offer in the MyRewards section for 10% back on Amazon spend during April. Maximum refund is £10. Free money for those not aware !

  • Sam Collins says:

The LCY departure is 10:20 – surely for that reason it’s an additional service rather than a replacement for the 06:00 departure? And the mirror slot would be the 22:35 arrival into LHR the night before? Presuming the arrival / departure slots are reversable that would still mean leaving a plane at LHR for 16 hours during the day?

    • Alan says:

Your first point seems valid, but the second point assumes that an airline would use the paired slots for a single aircraft. If you have an airline with numerous flights during the day you could, presumably, shuffle them around to negate the need to keep a plane on the tarmac for 16 hours

  • Sam Collins says:

Ooh – Norwegian just announced LGW-SIN, maybe SQ will want the TP slot to get rid of them off the route sharpish…

    • Gavin says:

I thought it could be the sale to an Asian airline, ideal departure and arrival times if they are swapped around

  • CC says:

Hertz offer is not worth it for me, if £30 a day for the cars is bad enough, I don’t have any locations near by. If it were more like the Avis offer a few months ago where you get one big lump for a few days rental then I’d be in.
