News in brief:

£1,365 Business Class tickets to Canberra on Qatar Airways

Via Flyertalk, Qatar Airways seems to have slipped out some more exceptional fares to Australia.  This is not part of the January sale which won’t launch for another couple of weeks in my experience.

This deal is both a) very cheap and b) very obscure and c) only good for a couple.

You are looking at Oslo to Canberra, booked pretty much any time next year between April and November.  It is not available every day but it seems to be there at least once a week.

Using promo code PCSPECIAL on the Qatar Airways Norwegian website here, you should be able to find a fare of NOK 30,310 for TWO people in Business Class between Oslo and Canberra.  This works out at £1365 each!

The fare is also bookable from Stockholm, which is more convenient from the UK but costs more.  Remember to look for 2 seats and use the PCSPECIAL code.  You should see prices of SEK 35,750 for two which comes out at £1615 per person.

Whilst the plane stops in Sydney, you must carry on to Canberra.  You cannot get off in Sydney or your return flight will be cancelled.  Prices are higher for Oslo / Stockholm to Sydney on its own.  Prices are also higher if you are travelling alone.

There are reports of a slightly cheaper deal coming up if you can get a multi-city booking of Oslo – Canberra, Canberra – Stockholm to price up on the right dates, but I couldn’t make it work.

Remember that Qatar Airways flights earn Avios and BA tier points.  Details, plus links to my reviews of the different Qatar Airways business class configurations, are in this HFP article on the last Qatar Airways saleThe Norway deals are here and the Stockholm deals are here.

Qatar Airways sale

Qatar Airways 15% discount code

If you don’t want to travel to Norway for a flight, Qatar Airways has also launched a 15% off discount code for flights from London.

Code FLYMOREQR gets you 15% off the base fare (ie the amount before taxes) on flights from London Heathrow to: Bali, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Colombo, Bangkok, Perth, Sydney, Kathmandu, Male (Maldives), Auckland, Phuket, Goa, Canberra, Penang, Utapao (Pattaya) and Chiang Mai.

You need to book by 15th January for travel between 15th January and 31st March 2018.  It is valid for both Economy and Business Class flights.  However, if you book today you will benefit from the 48 hour flash sale currently running.

You can see full terms and conditions of the 15% discount code on this special page of the Qatar Airways website.

IAG given exclusivity to buy NIKI

According to reports in the German press, IAG – parent of British Airways – has been granted exclusivity in the race to buy Austrian airline NIKI.

Part of airberlin, NIKI had followed its parent into administration after Lufthansa’s attempt to purchase it fell foul of the European Commission.

The rumoured price is €40m.  It isn’t clear what IAG will get for that apart from landing slots, as the aircraft may already have been returned to their owners.  Passengers booked to travel on NIKI will presumably have already been refunded by their credit card companies.

It is expected that NIKI will be merged into Vueling, IAG’s existing Barcelona-based low cost carrier.  Whether it continues to fly NIKI’s existing routes is another question – if it did, we would still be able to redeem Avios on those routes as we did when they were flown by airberlin.  We may get more information today or over the weekend.

Companion deal is the cheapest but even for a single traveller the prices are compelling, and not just to CBR. You can book to SYD, MEL or AKL for one in the low £1700s before the PCSPECIAL discount. eg https://goo.gl/flights/9zAA

O/t – I have 21 nights booked at Hilton Como for august (3 rooms, 7 nights each) all in flexible rate – 21 individual reservations. .
Two of the rooms will be occupied by Hilton gold, the third room is booked on one of the same accounts. Hopefully we get decent rooms but breakfast is the main thing.

About 10 nights will be replaced with redemptions once I have earned the necessary points/certs.

The remaining 10-11 nights I intend to replace with prepaid, nights at a cheaper rate (hopefully).

The hotel is brand new (opens February) so should be starting with low occupancy, but it’s a (UK) bank holiday weekend in august.

What would be your method to book these nights? Book them all now? Wait until nearer the time when the hotel has a better view of their inventory? Or hedge Hilton bets and book some now and some later.

Gut instinct is to book some now (the rooms where there spread between the flex rate and non flex rate is greatest) and leave some nearer the time.

Also hoping the hotel will merge the reservations in to one for each room if I email them a few weeks in advance – they won’t manner us checkout/in every day and clean the room will they?

      Hotels will happily link bookings

    • TGLoyalty says:

Aren’t Hilton the chains where if any part of your stay as a redemption you get no points at all?

If I remember you may get lucky and the rule isn’t applied.

However, that may have all changed with the recent relaunch

      • Rob says:

Yes. If you back-to-back a cash and a points night you get NO points for the cash night.

        • Tom1 says:

Interesting thanks – didn’t realise that was the case.

Does the same apply if it’s a Hilton free weekend night rather than points redemptions?

          • Rob says:

Yes. If you do that you should book the paid night in the name of your partner and then make sure you check out and check in again (no need to pack obviously).

        • Tom1 says:

If I have two rooms booked on one account, if one room was all redemptions and the other was all cash, what happens then? Do I still miss out on all the points even for the cash nights?

          • Rob says:

The 2 rooms have to be merged into one bill at check out under Hilton rules. Not sure about the points in this scenario ….

  • David says:

If you’re going to be like that about it, you could at least get your aircraft types correct. The picture is clearly not an A321, but an A320. Since QR were operating a number of BA LHR flights with those earlier this year, there’s a good chance that HfP readers will have been on one or at least seen them out of the window at T5.

  • Paulm says:

OT- did some first time amex mr transfers last night. What are people’s experiences in time taken to move to Hilton? Is it any quicker than the quoted time as eager to make a redemption booking.

Also transferred to Delta and received double the amount! Guess there is not a 100% bonus and amex will come back for those at some point, but what would they do if all spent?!

    • Jonny says:

From memory 1-2 working days – if your Honors account is already linked to MR. And neither side can help chase/hurry them up as they blame the other party!

    • RussellH says:

I think first time transfers take longer than subsequent ones.

I did an MR->Hilton transfer Wed night, points are in my Hilton a/c this morning. This is perhaps few hours longer than other recent transfers – no doubt IT is on Xmas/NMew Year go slow too.

    • Tilly says:

I did a first time transfer MR to Hilton a few weeks ago and they transferred in 24 hours. Was rather impressed with how quick it was.

    • thehornets says:

Linked mine a couple of days ago (Hilton and SPG) – both were completed today

  • mart says:

Has been cheaper booked osl-cnb-arn for £1220 2 week ago for march ,so extra 30k miles and stopover hotel on way bargain!

    • @mkcol says:

I’m not sure there will be many people looking to go to Coonamble, but well spotted!

  • Zoe says:

Seriously considering booking this and cancelling our 241 to KUL back from SIN for our Australia trip for May -July next year.
Could use the 241 for a business class positioning flights as otherwise it will be likely to be wasted. This would free up some Avios for internal flights, although I also have a few Virgin miles that might be handy.
What are people’s best Oslo hotels for the overnight as I’m not prepared to risk missing the flight! We are not too bothered about hotel being plush, easy for the airport / looking around is more important.
    Thanks in advance

    • Nick says:

The best hotel in Oslo (in my opinion!) is the Radisson Blu by the central railway station – it’s the tallest building in the country so you can’t miss it! Perfect for the city and super easy access to the airport on the express train.

    • Graham Walsh says:

There is a Radisson at the airport only a few minutes away. When I go (once a month) I usually stay near Lysaker as it’s next to the office. Have stayed in other Nordic Choice and Radisson’s in central Oslo, all are good. I most recently stayed at the Radisson Blu Scandinavia Hotel Oslo
Holbergsgate 30, great views at the bar on the top floor.

If you do go, don’t get the FlyToGet Airport train into town from the airport, it’s double the price and about 2 minutes quicker. Just get the normal train into town.

      • Zoe says:

Thanks, Nick & Graham. We have gone for it. On our outbound we have a long layover in Doha 5pm till 9.30am so now looking for a hotel as I couldn’t bear that long in an airport even with a great business lounge! On the way back its more like 6/7 hours so more marginal.

  • Anna says:

OT – for anyone stuck with travelling in school holiday periods like we are at present. I was looking at Orlando holidays as we’d like to return there in the next couple of years, and prices have gone through the roof! An economy flight to Orlando, Tampa or Miami in peak season is around £4000 pp, so for a family of four, that’s £4k even before accommodation, car hire and theme park tickets (flight plus car package with BA saves less than £200!). This means that avios redemptions in economy are actually worth it – at £341 taxes pp the cash saving would be £2,600 (not taking into account that you won’t earn avios obviously).

I was reading that Orlando has become such a desirable destination that ordinary people are being priced out and that it’s now cheaper to fly to California and do Disney/Universal there!

    • Graham Walsh says:

I know it’s crazy pricing. I need to go for work and it’s sub £500 in Economy direct and then double in PE and then crazy UC pricing on VS. I’ll be looking so it in the next few years with my 2 kids. Thankfully my sister has just purchased a house 20mins from Orlando so will be able to rent that out at family rates hopefully 🙂

    • Rob says:

Price Virgin from Dublin in Business, some good deals at present.

      • Graham Walsh says:

My problem is only there for 5 days in March for a conference. When I was trying via DUB, it was still quite high for a short trip.

      • Rob says:

Both Aer Lingus and BA – you want BA as it books into Business and you get 40 TP each way plus the Avios.

    • Alan says:

Had a skyscanner alert for August this morning and the price for indirect to MCO was coming in at £421 (based on 2x adults and 1x Teen). Wouldn’t suit everyone though as its via Zurich, which is, obviously, going the wrong way!

BA indirect (using AA via Philliy) from Dublin was coming in at £454.Those were both fro 17th – 31st August 18

      • Anna says:

I don’t think the average family could be bothered with those routes, especially if you’re starting from the regions. Which airline was going via Zurich?

      • Anna says:

To go from MAN for under £800 involves flying via Brussels and Toronto and takes 18 hours!

        • Lumma says:

I once did NCL-CDG-ATL-LAS LAS-SEA-AMS-NCL as a way of going to Las Vegas cheaply over the Easter holidays once. Everyone else thought I was mad. Think it was £450

    • JoeyJoJo says:

I’m here right now. It’s certainly getting more upmarket. There are some lovely resort complexes and there are new hotels/restaurants/etc everywhere.
Unfortunately though, I’m not sure the parks can keep up.. Disney had to soft close on Christmas Day, but every day has been unbearably busy, 6hr queue for avatar in animal kingdom a couple of days ago, couldn’t leave the hotel yesterday because of the queues to get in seaworld.

      • Stevie G says:

What resorts do you recommend JoeyJoJo?

        • JoeyJoJo says:

Any of the Marriott or Hilton vacations. We’ve thoroughly enjoyed the HGV at seaworld, and it was very reasonable to boot.

      • Jon says:

Several years ago we found that the parks get mega busy from Christmas Day onwards until New Year. The Americans come down in their droves. But the time before Christmas Day was a delight.

    • Terri says:

There are some good prices to Florida from Jersey. I have recently booked family to go in October school holidays premium economy BA Jersey to Orlando for £550 pp. Add the £50 to get to jersey and its still a good deal plus enjoying a short break by the seaside. Prices do fluctuate, about £750 each last time I checked. I had to book through a OTA as BA was pricing at over £1,000pp.

      • Anna says:

That’s a lot to cram into a week, or are you “pinching” days at either end?!

        • the real harry1 says:

my GCSE son gave me a formal instruction not to pinch even a day nowadays 🙁

    • Stevie G says:

Booked our outbound to Orlando for next August via BA/Amex 241 and then found I couldn’t get flights back from Orlando/Miami/Tampa as zero availability. Looking to fly on to NYC or Caribbean to get home. Florida has certainly got popular.

      • Anna says:

Some airlines do reasonable one way prices – Thomas Cook as I recall offer one way from MAN to Orlando and NYC without the huge inflation BA applies.

  • BrianN says:

OT but I’ve heard that the Hilton Honors ‘MyWay’ benefits will be changing globally in January – Waldorf Astoria will now be offering 1000 points and free breakfast to diamond members,

    Anyone else heard that?

    Cheers

    • Rob says:

Not heard it, but it would be very welcome and would remove a relatively pointless anomaly since, to my mind, W-A and Conrad are of the same quality level.

      • BrianN says:

Hi it’s from a very credible source so I’m almost certain it’s happening. Also been advised it will be extended to Gold members as well. Also one guest in addition to the member.
