News in brief:

See Lady Gaga with Starwood or Marriott Rewards

Tickets to see Lady Gaga at the O2 in London on 4th February turned up on the Starwood Preferred Guest and Marriott Rewards websites yesterday.

The pricing feels very toppy to me.  The price is the same on both sites – 30,000 SPG points via this link or 90,000 Marriott Rewards points via this link.  I would value the points at £450 of free hotel stays.

You get two tickets in the SPG Suite, which is fully catered with both a hot buffet and a staffed bar, all complimentary.  Here is a HFP review of the suite.

Iberia / Groupon deal returns

It’s back!  Fortunately, or unfortunately (it depends how much trouble you had getting the Avios to post when this deal ran in the past) you can yet again buy cheap Avios points simply by heading over to Groupon in Spain.

This is an Iberia Plus deal.  This means that there are two hurdles to jump:

You need an Iberia Plus Avios account (easily fixed by going to if you don’t have one)

Your Iberia account will need to be 90 days old before you are allowed to use ‘Combine My Avios’ and send your points across to your British Airways Executive Club or account

Start by visiting the Iberia shopping portal.  You will earn an extra 9 Avios per €1 for your purchase in the IberiaPluStore – if it tracks.

Click here to visit PluStore, change the langage to English, search for Groupon and click through.  Once you are on Groupon and have got the relevant cookie on your computer, click here for the Avios offer page.

It is best to use Google Chrome to open it.  Chrome should offer to translate the text.  If it doesn’t, right click on your mouse and a translation option will appear.

There are six price levels- the 2,000 Avios deal is the cheapest:

2,000 Avios = €19 (£16.77) = 0.84p (excluding the PluStore Avios)

4,000 Avios = €59 (£52.08) = 1.30p (excluding the PluStore Avios)

8,000 Avios = €99 (£87.40) = 1.09p (excluding the PluStore Avios)

15,000 Avios = €189 (£166.85) = 1.11p (excluding the PluStore Avios)

20,000 Avios = €249 (£219.82) = 1.10p (excluding the PluStore Avios)

34,000 Avios = €429 (£378.73) = 1.11p (excluding the PluStore Avios)

You can buy a maximum of five packages per Iberia account.  However, you are restricted to just one of the ‘2,000 Avios’ packs.  You can buy up to 10 of each of the other packs per Iberia account, so effectively – since you could buy via different people who shared your BA Household Account – the maximum is virtually limitless.

About 30 minutes later you will receive an emailed voucher.  If you don’t, the voucher will also be showing in your account on the Spanish Groupon site.  There is a link in the voucher to a page on the Groupon site where you need to input the codes.

You are told that your Avios will take 30 days to appear but, in reality, they have historically turned up quicker.  The problems that people have experienced in the past getting the vouchers to arrive appear to be solved.

The big question ….. is it worth it?

This isn’t the most straightforward promotion ever.  You can’t be 100% certain that your PluStore purchase will track.  I am least more confident these days that you will get your Avios without huge amounts of trouble.  Buying 2,000 at 0.84p is an OK deal but the time required may be too much of a faff to justify it.

1.11p per Avios, at the 34,000 Avios level, is far too rich for me.  Never pay more than 1p per point – preferably not more than 0.75p per point – unless you have a definite plan for how you will use them and what value you will get when you do.

Up to €60 of Accor hotel vouchers with a Europcar rental

The best car rental deal of the week was clearly Virgin Atlantic’s new offer of a whopping 6,000 Flying Club miles with a 2+ day Avis rental.

If you find yourself booking a car from Europcar instead, there is an interesting offer with Le Club AccorHotels, the loyalty scheme for Ibis, Novotel, Mercure, Sofitel etc.

If you book by 31st January for rentals completed by 15th June, you will get:

750 Accor points for a 1-4 day rental

1,500 Accor points for a 5-7 day rental

3,000 Accor points for a 8+ day rental

1 Accor point is worth 2 Eurocents of credit towards an Accor hotel stay or 1 Avios point if you convert to Iberia Plus.  Do not convert to BA as you only get 0.5 Avios points per Accor point.

Full details are on the Europcar website here.  US and Canada rentals do not qualify.

  1. OT: if I, as a holder of an SPG Amex, refer someone for Amex Nectar card, will I get 5000 points for referring?

  2. OT, just in case anyone is interested given the recent Qatar sale, the Marriott Marquis City Center Doha Hotel (Cat 4) is on the point saver’s list reduced from 20,000 points to 15,000.

  3. Keefe Kwan says:

Bought the 2000 avios groupon. Am I the only one having issues redeeming the groupon?

    • I am also having problems, am still unable to redeem the voucher. Has anyone been successful in redeeming the voucher?

    • No Keefe you’re not the only one. Spanish Groupon says “Coupon not valid” (in Spanish of course) when trying to redeem it. I have had an online chat with them and they are looking into it. Not sure what the problem can be, but I work for a Dutch company in London and our IT servers are based in Paris. I wait with bated breath but I ain’t holding it, it could be a while.

    • Rob Saw says:

I’ve done it twice – first time was easy, still waiting for the second – I must get in touch with them…

    • Mine does not work either. Keeps going back to code entry screen each time

    • Had and email from Groupon Spain to say problem fixed, try again. Tried again and most successful. Most happy now.

  4. Same for me. Got the PDF voucher but cannot redeem it.

In Chrome it just goes back to the “Step 1” screen, in Firefox it brings up a coupon invalid message in Spanish.

  5. Re the Iberiaplusstore/Groupon voucher for avios, I ordered 2000 but haven’t had an email with the pdf voucher and it’s not in my Groupon .es account. I paid with PayPal and fortunately the receipt is proof I made the purchase. And I’ve had the standard Iberiaplusstore email saying Groupon informed them of the purchase. But without the voucher codes I’m concerned. Does anyone have any ideas on how to redeem in this situation? (I’ve emailed Groupon about it and my fingers are crossed).

  6. Working for me now and the Plus Store Avios have been tracked as well.

  7. TripleB says:

working for me now too – iberia plus didn’t track though … alas it’s just the cherry on top
