Last minute Marriott Travel Package panic – and other things to do today and tomorrow

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Today, Friday 17th, is the last day to book hotels using the old Marriott and Starwood reward charts.

After a period of downtime, hotels will become bookable under the new charts from some point late on Saturday or on Sunday.

Here is the link to the new reward chart on the Marriott website which lets you see the new pricing.  Note that this pricing includes the new Category 8 which doesn’t come into effect until January – you won’t pay more than 60,000 points per night until then.

First …. a warning on Marriott Travel Packages

A worrying announcement was made on Flyertalk on Wednesday night by the official Starwood representative.

You can read the relevant post here but this is the key line:

“After 8/18, certificates cannot be upgraded or downgraded, regardless of when they were purchased.”

This is a BIG problem.  Historically, the smart thing to do with a Marriott Travel Package was to buy the cheapest one (Category 1-5) and then, when you’d decided where to go, ring Marriott and pay the difference to upgrade it to the relevant category.  This made sense because you didn’t get a refund if you bought a high category certificate and ended up booking somewhere cheaper.

The Starwood representative is saying that anyone who did this is stuffed after today.  They will have to stay at a Category 1-5 hotel – and those are not exactly the luxury end of the portfolio – or surrender their certificate for presumably the same 45,000 points compensation that is offered today.

If you are sitting on a Category 1-5 certificate you need to have a very quick think about whether you believe the statement above and whether you should call Marriott today to upgrade it or whether you would be happy to accept 45,000 points to surrender it.  If you do surrender, you would have spent a net 225,000 points for 120,000 Avios which is still not a bad deal.

Who should book a reward room TODAY?

In general, if you want to book a five star hotel in a major city (London, Paris, New York etc) then you should book today.

JW Marriott Essex House in New York, for example, jumps from 45,000 points to 60,000 points tomorrow.  The same happens with the Grosvenor House in London, Marriott County Hall, Marriott Grosvenor Square, Marriott Champs Elysees in Paris, The Shelbourne in Dublin etc.

Domes of Elounda in Crete is, oddly, the hotel with the biggest price rise of all (89%!) as I discussed here.

From the SPG side, lock in (for London) the Great Northern and Sheraton Skyline at Heathrow.  The Sheraton Grand in Edinburgh also jumps up as do the two Le Meridien resorts in Dubai.  The Sheraton Miyako in Tokyo also goes up, as does the Hotel Bristol in Vienna if you ever wanted to try that.

In general it is the luxury hotels which are going up and the mid market hotels which are going down.  There are some exceptions, eg the excellent Renaissance Paris Republique which I reviewed here is going down from 40,000 to 35,000 points.

Who should book a reward room TOMORROW?

If you want a book into a lower end hotel, you may find that it gets cheaper tomorrow.

More interestingly, there are MASSIVE discounts on the hotels which are currently in Starwood Category 7.  If you book these hotels today, they will cost you 105,000 points per night.  From tomorrow, they will drop to 60,000 points per night.

This page of the Starwood website lists their current ‘Category 7’ hotels.  These cost 30,000 to 35,000 SPG points per night at present, equivalent to 90,000 to 105,000 points in the new scheme.

You can find a full list of ‘top category’ Starwood hotels here.

Some hotels in SPG Category 7 are classified as ‘all suite’ and it is not clear how these will be treated from Saturday.  These are (this list also includes some ‘all inclusive’ exceptions): Vana Belle, a Luxury Collection Resort, Koh Samui, Thailand; The Naka Island, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa, Phuket, Thailand; Sheraton Steamboat Resort Villas, Steamboat Springs, Colorado; The Westin Golf Resort & Spa, Playa Conchal, Costa Rica; The St. Regis Bora Bora and the Le Méridien Bora Bora, Bora Bora, French Polynesia; Mystique, a Luxury Collection Resort, Santorini, Santorini, Greece; The St. Regis Bali Resort, Nusa Dua, Indonesia; Hotel Cala di Volpe, Hotel Pitrizza, and Hotel Romazzino, Costa Smeralda, Italy; W Maldives,  North Ari Atoll, Maldives; W Koh Samui, Surat Thani, Thailand; Al Maha, a Luxury Collection Desert Resort & Spa, Dubai, U.A.E.; St. Regis Residence Club, Aspen, Aspen, CO; and Phoenician Residences, a Luxury Collection Residence Club, Scottsdale, AZ.

A reminder of the new rule on booking without points

From tomorrow, you can continue to book ex-Marriott hotels if you don’t have the points.  You have until 14 days before check-in to get the required balance into your account.

However, you will not be able to book ex-Starwood hotels in this way.  This means that you can’t lock in a deal at any of the current Category 7 SPG hotels I listed above.

What am I planning to do?

My only personal plan, before anyone asks, is to try to lock in a couple of nights at the St Regis New York for September, dropping my current Essex House booking.  I like the idea of trying it once and 60,000 points is a good price.

We won’t be rushing to book the Maldives etc because I have decent visibility of our 2019 holiday plans and I don’t see this fitting in.  I’d rather wait a couple of years until my kids are older and can get more out of it – after all, even if the hotel is an excellent deal I’m still on the hook for four flights ….

Poor show if Marriott are pulling the plug on upgrades with such short notice. It’s not even official notice.

Sheraton LHR going up by how many points?!?! Are they serious?

  • Lyn says:

O/T but seems more relevant here than the Bits article.

I would be grateful for any recommendations for hotels any of you have stayed at and particularly like in Sydney and Melbourne for points redemptions. Either IHG, Hilton, SPG/Marriott or even Hyatt. Ideally good value redemptions, since I don’t have enough points to waste, but not necessarily the least expensive. Only status with IHG (Platinum) and Hilton (Gold). Thank you.

    • Ian M says:

I stayed at the West Hotel Sydney, Curio Collection by Hilton and the Hilton Sydney earlier this month. I’ve got Hilton Diamond status.

1 night at the Curio and 4 nights at the Hilton.

I wouldn’t stay at the Curio again. Wasn’t impressed with breakfast, no room upgrade, and the room was very dark.

The Hilton was much better. Far better breakfast, decent executive lounge. Only negative with the Hilton was that they were only willing to give a 1pm late checkout unless I paid extra. As long as I didn’t need a late checkout I would definitely stay at the Hilton again.

If you’ve got any questions about either hotel let me know

      • Lyn says:

Thank you, Ian. The Hilton seems to be in a better location and looks much better “on paper”, but it is really good to have that confirmed.

Yes, if you don’t mind, I have a couple of other, perhaps rather odd, questions about the Hilton. The building sounds very tall. What sort of floor levels would you recommend for being up above the worst city noise, perhaps even with a view, but not so high up as to get a feeling of vertigo? Since we won’t have access to the Lounge (as Gold), and will be visiting Sydney in January, do you remember if there is space in the mini-bar to put bottles of water etc.? And I don’t suppose you tried the pool?

        • Ian M says:

          Hey, no problem.

You never know, you might get a lucky and get an upgrade to an executive room and get lounge access! My room was on the 42nd floor and was facing Sydney Harbour / Circular Quay direction, but despite being so high I didn’t have amazing views. There’s so many tall buildings in that part of Sydney! There was no real street noise being that high.

Regarding the mini bar, it was one of these automatic minibars where you get billed as soon as you take something out. So I was a bit worried about moving things in there! But there was a small amount of room to fit a drink I had bought while out.

          I didn’t try the pool.

One other thing I forgot to say about the Hilton which was a big positive for me, is that the room had fantastic blackout blinds! The room could be made pitch black even in the middle of the afternoon.

        • Lyn says:

          All very helpful Thanks again.

        • xcalx says:

You should try the Shangri La Blu Bar on 36 for an amazing view over the harbour. Very reasonable food and drink prices too.

      • Alan says:

Damn, have got a 5 for 4 night booking at West Curio in Jan, was hoping it would be OK as a property! Stayed at the Hilton and wasn’t impressed with it, queued every morning for about 15+ min to get in for breakfast!

In Melbourne I’ve previously used Airbnb to excellent effect, managed to get an apartment in my old building in South Yarra, which is a lovely suburb just two stops South from Flinders Street.

    • Nick says:

I really liked the Novotel near the harbour, it’s an easy 5-10 min walk to the metro or harbour ferry, the rate was decent, and it was one of the best sleeps I’ve ever had in a hotel. Great cafes nearby for breakfast. The staff were some of the nicest in any hotel I’ve ever stayed in. Granted it’s not high-end, but for all of the above I’d go back regardless.

      • Lyn says:

Thank you also, Nick. We only stay at high-end hotels very occasionally, always using points, or the annual IHG ambassador weekend certificate combined with points, so your recommendation is also really useful. I’ve heard Accor has a good reputation in Australia.

        • Alan says:

Yep I still had Accor Plat when I lived there in 2015/16 and it proved very useful on a number of stays with superb upgrades!

  • N says:

Has there been any chatter about what happens to Marriott Cat 1-5 free night vouchers? I’ve got one and am staying in Starwood Cat 4 and Cat 5 properties in early September – could do with applying the Cert to one of them

  • Louie says:

Is it too late to open a Marriott account and transfer SPG points to it? If you don’t, what will happen next does anyone know?

    • MattyS says:

I think I read that they will open one for you, and email you the details but can’t find anything to back it up.

You should still be able to open a Marriott account on-line today though, link the accounts and transfer the points over. They go across pretty much instantaneously.

  • mike says:

    hi rob

out of interest, why are you going for the st regis in NY rather than the RC? I am making a similar decision over the weekend for top hotels in NY, what swayed it for you?

    cheers

    • Ian M says:

The free breakfast (if you’re platinum) would more than likely be enough for me to pick the St Regis over the RC

      • mike says:

I am platinum but with the availability of so many food options in NY don’t really care about the breakfast at st regis ( although have read it is nice). wondering what other factors rob/people may consider? anyone stayed in both?

    • Simon says:

I stayed at the R-C NYC (Central Park) for seven nights in Dec 2017 having been looking forward to it for a year. HUGELY DISAPPOINTING: dated, tired, and my God it’s expensive for add-ons. I also stayed at the R-C Tokyo (AMAZING) last year, and have stayed at the R-C HKG (old and new iterations), again both being excellent. As such, I’d absolutely err towards the St Regis next time. R-Cs in America seem quite tired.

    • Rob says:

      One off experience ….

  • Ada cheung says:

I have tried to redem the hotel + air package since 2nd Aug by transferring the point from my husband to my account.

I have email and called Marriott from 2nd Aug until today, still can’t transfer the points ( more than 50k point

The hotline keep saying that the system is down and nothing they can do.

    • Mark2 says:

assuming that you have the same address, the best way is to move to SPG where you can do unlimited transfers than move back to Marriott.
But may be too late now.

  • Gin and Tonic Please says:

I’ve just been on the phone to Marriott to book a TP. Some good news and some bad:

Bad – They’re having trouble booking the packages as the connection to the airlines (mine was Virgin Atlantic) doesn’t seem to be working. They’re going to call me back later to confirm the situation. Will update when I hear.

Good – They triple checked and confirmed to me that packages will be ported across and honoured at the same category – i.e. a Cat 7 now will be a Cat 7 redemption in the new scheme, even though it’s worth a lot more points-wise. I was looking to book a Cat 9 that moves to a Cat 7 in the new structure, but was advised that I will only need a Cat 7 certificate as it will be honoured. I will, of course, be getting this in writing from them when I speak to them later about the systems issues…

    • Alan says:

Hmm would not be pleased with that result unless they offer any points for downgrading! TBH would be a bit surprised if they do go down this route based on what we’ve seen so far.

  • Paul says:

Just redeemed a package and was told after merger it will be the same category.
    If true great result!

    • BJ says:

Thanks to both G&T and Paul for confirming this. Mark told the same thing on Wednesday. Looking increasingly likely to be true. If so, only downside is availability by the time 18/9 comes around. I wonder if they are getting so much agro on the phones that they were told to spill the beans, if some agents cannot keep quiet or anotherrumour.

      • Gin and Tonic Please says:

Just spoken to them again. Their system still isn’t recognising my Virgin number, but they agree it’s their issue not mine (as I’ve sent them proof of the number). They are therefore reserving the hotel I want, and following up to honour the TP booking once they can get the system to work. Everything will be put in writing – including confirmation that I only need a Cat 7 package for the hotel (despite it being currently Cat 9).

      • Matthew Stone says:

@BJ If its a Marriott hotel, can you not book it now and apply the package on 18/9 ?

I’m looking at reserving a new Cat 7 hotel as well as keeping the existing booking ive got and hopefully being able to unattach the current Cat 7 TP cert from one and transfer it over to the higher category.

        If its SPG then no.
