Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Here are the best Business and First Class deals in the new British Airways sale

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

British Airways has launched a new sale, with deals in every class from First to World Traveller and Euro Traveller.

The home page for the premium class part of the sale is here.  You can book until 25th September.

Travel dates are all over the place and it would take me a full article just to list all the permutations.  On most routes you can travel until March 2019 but that statement hides a lot of variability.  Advance purchase restrictions also vary and can be as high as 50 days, so don’t plan on a last-minute getaway to New York JFK ……

British Airways business first class sale

You should take a look at the small print at the bottom of the sale website for all the travel date details.

We will look at Premium Economy deals in a separate article soon.  We won’t focus on Economy deals, but you can see what is available via this sale page of ba.com.  The headline fare to New York is £317 return.

The easiest way to check out the best prices to a specific destination is with the British Airways Low Fare Finder tool on ba.com. This will show you the cheapest price on any route, in any class, on month by month basis.

If you can be flexible with dates, there are some decent fares available.

In general, fares in First and Club World are similar to what we saw in the January sale although this masks some route by route variation.  I picked out in Club World:

  • Atlanta £1,475
  • Boston £1,335
  • Chicago £1,350
  • Las Vegas £1,624
  • New York £1,343
  • Philadelphia £1,297
  • Antigua £1,696
  • Kingston £1,197
  • Punta Cana £1,150
  • St Lucia £1,497
  • Amman £1,100
  • Abu Dhabi £1,600
  • Dubai £1,699
  • Cape Town £1,966
  • Johannesburg £2,011
  • Seychelles £1,932
  • Lima £1,796
  • Tel Aviv £1,232
  • Delhi £1,749
  • Bangkok £1,763
  • Shanghai £1,808
  • Tokyo £2,245

In First Class, I spotted:

  • Boston £1,976
  • Chicago £1,901
  • New York £2,006
  • San Francisco £2,391
  • Tel Aviv £1,632
  • Singapore £2,781
  • Seychelles £2,663
  • Johannesburg £2,832

There are also deals on European Club Europe short-haul flights with some destinations at £225 return or less for 80 tier points. I spotted Alicante, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Bilbao, Billund, Bologne, Bordeaux, Cologne, Dublin, Dusseldorf, Genoa, Gibraltar, Gothenburg, Hamburg, Hannover, Limoges, Luxembourg, Lyon, Malaga, Marseilles, Milan, Nice, Nuremberg, Palma, Paris, Prague, Seville, Stuttgart, Tallinn, Toulouse, Turin, Valencia, Venice and Zagreb. These fares will require a Saturday night stay.

One to note is Helsinki from £238 return.  This is a ‘160 tier points’ route (80 tier points each way) which means that a weekend break here is a cheap way to get your nearer Bronze, Silver or Gold status.  I list all the 160 tier point Club Europe routes in this article.  If you’re in Scotland, Glasgow to Helsinki (via Heathrow) is £341 return for 240 tier points.

Remember that ‘Part Pay With Avios’ (details here) can be used with these fares.  Think twice before using this, however, as you generally get little more than a poor 0.5p per Avios at the higher levels.

BA Holidays is also running deals

It is well worth pricing up BA’s ‘flight and hotel’ or ‘flight and car’ options.  Adding a hotel, even a one-star one, or a small car can bring down the cost to less than the flight itself.

I strongly recommend popping over to BA Holidays here and doing a test booking before booking anything as ‘flight only’.

Another benefit of booking your flight as a holiday is that you only pay a deposit now with the balance due five weeks before departure.  To top it off, you get a bonus 1 Avios per £1 spent when booking via BA Holidays.

Here are a few examples of BA Holidays pricing:

Palma –  Club Europe flights and 3 nights at a 4-star hotel from £238 per person

Venice –  Club Europe flights and 2 nights at a 4-star hotel from £259 per person

New York – Club World flights and 4 nights at a 4-star hotel from £1,536 per person

Dubai –  Club World flights and 3 nights at a 4-star hotel from £1,632 per person

Las Vegas –  Club World flights and 5 nights at a 4-star hotel from £1,752 per person

Barbados –  Club World flights and 7 nights at a 4-star hotel from £1,865 per person

Club World holiday deals are here and Club Europe holiday deals are here.

The best thing to do if you are interested is to go to ba.com and have a look around.  The full BA premium sale details are here.

To maximise your miles when paying, your best bet is the British Airways American Express Premium Plus card which earns double Avios (3 per £1) when you book at ba.com or via BA Holidays.  You do not get double Avios if you book with the free British Airways American Express card

Another option is American Express Preferred Rewards Gold which offers double points – 2 per £1 – when you book flight tickets directly with an airline.

Booked a night in Milan flights and central hotel for £385 for two of us £300 discount in sale. Used 18k Avios for AMS flights and £70 and was cheaper to book hotel separately, will get a train to enidhoven for approx 80 euros for two return. Booked one night and flights to Barcelona for £768 … paid £150 deposit today rest later, that was cheaper to book as holiday than seperatly. That’s my European tour sorted out. Plus get the pesky 20 tier points I needed to make silver. Works out 3 trips for 2 people approx £1400 , £700 pp. I’m happy with that.

  • Scottydogg says:

O/T but hoping someone can help

We want to book 4 BA return tickets , 2 adults , 2 Kids (within UK)
There is only 2 Avios seat redemptions left , my ideal is to book the 2 adults tickets with Avios , and then the 2 kids ones with cash (as they are cheaper due to the tax on child tickets)
Can this be done ? you can’t buy just child tickets through BA.com as it forces you to have at least 1 adult . Can they do it over the phone ?

    • KevMc says:

I don’t think what you are after is possible.

I think that the minimum age for kids travelling alone is 14 and as they wouldn’t be on the same booking as you, I think BA and their system would class them as being on their own.

It may well be worth giving the call centre a ring though and seeing if they have a way to get around this…

    • Spurs Debs says:

Phone them up and link the bookings, that’s what I did when I made a redemption booking for grandson. They just linked them and no problem.
Just phone BA and ask them to sort it out for you and do the bookings.

    • SM says:

      +1

When wife and I travelled CW to HKG using 241 voucher, I just called BA call center and booked my son who was 2 at the time in to the same cabin using avios on different PNR but they just linked the bookings.

    • vindaloo says:

Yes, definitely possible. Have done it many times when for whatever reason my kids couldn’t be on the same booking as me.

  • Justin says:

Just booked CE to HEL for £205 return which will finally see me get into Bronze – keep missing it by 20 TP every year. As these depart from T3 any recommendations as to which lounge to use? Can we lounge hop or if you use one Oneworld lounge is that your lot?

    • Simon Barlow says:

      cathay is good

    • Genghis says:

You can lounge hop. Cathay is good all day. Depending on the time of day, Qantas do great brunch, reasonable dinner offering and have lots of gin.

      • Pid says:

Was in the Qantas Gin Bar last week. It was excellent and would recommend it.

  • Damien Keegan says:

Enquired previously about upgrading using Avios on our flights from BGI back to LGW in October / November (thanks to all who repsonded!) Just phoned the contact centre in Newcastle and bagged 2x cash CW upgrades from WTP for the inbound for <£600 for the both of us. Pretty chuffed with that TBH!!!!

  • mannymua says:

I’ve been demoted to Blue. I’m flying J to BKK in Feb but annoying my tier points calendar ends in June, but planning another trip to SIN end of June. I am trying to get silver.
Any recommendations how I can get the recommended flights and tier points to get Silver with my trip to SIN? I assume if my tier calendar ends in June everything will be reset.

    • fbrj says:

How about ARN-SIN (via HEL) return on Finnair (AY). Late June you can get return flights for Approx £1585 for 360TPs or, if that is not enough, go on QR from ARN for approx £1700 and 560TPs.

Of course you have to get to/from your exEU start point (plus possible hotel costs). RFS is your friend 🙂

      • mannymua says:

thanks. funny you say that as I found discounts on that route via QR after having an email from them today about their sales and came to the same conclusion. will fly via ARN. didn’t think about RFS from LHR – ARN so will look into that, thanks! 🙂

  • Delbert says:

    OT as no Bits today.

Thanks for the reminder on the SWISS 2-4-1 offer, Rob.

The good lady wife and I have never flown indirect to Thailand but a saving of at least £1k in business versus direct was too good to pass up and the departure and arrival times are most favourable as well as the Zurich connection times. So booked this morning at GBP 2,529.20 for April 2019.

  • TonyB says:

Some pretty good flight+hotel deals to Las Vegas with 5 nights at MGM Grand. Managed to book 6 tickets for a stag do in WTP for £1035 per person from LGW. Economy was £545!! Great value considering we are going end of May 2019.

  • KBuffett says:

Does anyone know why I can’t find any redemption details for LHR-SEZ?
Ideally I’d like to use my 2-4-1 ?

    • Darren says:

Out on Wed/Sat and back Thur/Sun.

It doesn’t appear on BA redemption finder.
