Has a 2nd Lloyds Avios Rewards upgrade voucher appeared in your Avios account?

I’ve had numerous emails from readers in recent days who have found a new upgrade voucher appearing in their avios.com account courtesy of their Lloyds Avios Rewards credit card.

If you didn’t get an email telling you it was there, it is worth checking anyway.  It will say:

Lloyds Bank Avios Rewards Upgrade Voucher
Valid from 29/09/2018
Expiry date 31/10/2019

It isn’t clear what is happening here, but it is a widespread situation.  My best guess is that this is part of the process of closing down the current cards.

Or, of course, it could be a mistake.

Lloyds was struggling to find a sensible plan which would allow them to close the cards.  They are being forcibly replaced with ‘next generation’ Mastercard-only Lloyds Avios Rewards credit cards which are substantially different from what you have now.

The new Lloyds Avios Rewards Mastercard will offer:

No annual fee

0.4 Avios per £1 you spend in the UK

0.8 Avios per £1 you spend outside the UK

0.4 Avios per £1 transferred on a balance transfer (this is a new benefit – Lloyds Duo Avios cardholders used to get Avios on balance transfers but Lloyds Avios Rewards cardholders did not)

….. plus an extra 25% bonus for Club Lloyds current account holders.

The bad news is:

There will no longer be a generous Amex card option

Overseas spending is no longer free – you will pay 2.99% on FX spend

There will no longer be an upgrade voucher

Because most cardholders will have their old card closed part-way through their membership year, it would be unfair to stop them getting a final upgrade voucher.

Lloyds may have decided that the cleanest thing to do is to give every cardholder their current year voucher.  It may also be a gesture towards Avios Rewards cardholders who are annoyed by the loss of 0% FX fees and the voucher.

Perhaps you should spend it quickly, though, just in case it is an error.

  • Andy says:

No free upgrade voucher for me ????

  • Alex W says:

Not for me, although I got given 2 back in Feb when the transfer issue was finally resolved. Was hoping to get another one or at least extend the expiry because I won’t able to use both this year.

  • Kevin says:

Sorry could anyone please clarify a bit what does it mean 2nd upgrade voucher. My understanding is I will get an upgrade voucher (2 upgrade vouchers?) when I hit the £7k benchmark on the card within a calendar year or have I missed anything.

    • Rob says:

Yes. Lloyds appears to be giving out vouchers irrespective of your spend.

      • Alan says:

Is it quite as clear as that? I’m a few hundred off £7k and no voucher for me…

    • pauldb says:

I think the “2nd voucher” sentiment has come from Flyertalk where it was first highlighted by those thinking they’d got a 2nd voucher in one card year. Same for us: I’m in a new year (since July) – not yet at £7k and no surprise voucher; wife has a December anniversary, got the current-year voucher in April and now got a 2nd (and hasn’t spent more than £8k).
So if there’s a theme, are these always appearing to those who have already earned the regular one? Which would mean Lloyds isn’t presenting this to those who are losing this year’s voucher optionality..

    • pauldb says:

That said, maybe it’s not such a great idea helping Lloyds figure out where the noes are buried. 😉

  • John G says:

Nothing for me. Anniversary date is April and have not had a voucher this card year.

  • Frenzie says:

I had 3 (!!) vouchers appearing (I have the very old premium lloyds card too)

2 upgrade vouchers and 1 economy companion flight voucher.

  • Frenzie says:

I have the old Lloyds Premium Avios card and I have reveived 2 vouchers.
1 economy companion voucher and 1 upgrade voucher.

    Nice.

  • Kathy says:

Nothing for me. My card anniversary is August, so I am only a couple of months (and about £1500) into my card year. Maybe they’re doing a staggered close-down? Or knowing Lloyds, it could just be a complete error.

    • John says:

Same here, August card Anniversary. £4.5k in the 2 months but no voucher.

  • Tony says:

I just have 1 voucher which I did recently trigger.

    • Johnny Holmes says:

How long from triggering it did it appear in your account? I triggered 6 weeks ago, with a statement date of 3 weeks and still nothing!
