BIG NEWS: British Airways is ‘changing’ the cost of Avios redemption flights on partner airlines

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

A worryingly vague email has just been sent out by British Airways to anyone who has recently booked an Avios redemption on a partner airline.

It says:

“As you’ve previously used your Avios to book reward flights with our global network of partner airlines, we wanted to let you know about some changes we’re making.

From 30 May 2019, we’ll be changing our Avios prices on reward flights with some of our partner airlines.

Don’t worry if you have an existing Avios booking with a partner airline. It’s still valid and you can make changes or cancel it if you need to*. Our new Avios prices will apply to any changes or new bookings you make after 30 May 2019.”

Here is the special page of ba.com it leads to:

“From 30 May 2019, we’ll be changing our Avios prices on reward flights with the following partner airlines:

  • Alaska Airlines
  • Air Italy
  • American Airlines
  • Cathay Pacific
  • Finnair
  • Japan Airlines
  • LATAM
  • Malaysia Airlines
  • Qantas
  • Qatar Airways
  • S7
  • Sri Lankan and
  • Royal Jordanian Airlines

The price of Avios upgrades on American Airlines only will also be changing from 30 May 2019. You will pay the difference between the Avios prices of your booked cabin and your upgraded cabin.

Don’t worry if you have an existing Avios booking with one of these airlines. It’s still valid and you can make changes or cancel it if you need to*. Our new Avios prices will apply to any changes or new bookings you make after 30 May 2019.

There will be no change to our Avios prices for reward flights and upgrades with British Airways, Aer Lingus, Iberia or Vueling. The Avios prices for our other services are also unaffected, so you can continue to benefit from spending your Avios on our wide range of hotels, car hire and experiences.”

This is, to put it mildly, not exactly informative.

The email is also untrue because as HfP readers know there ARE changes to Avios pricing on British Airways, which BA has already started to implement.

Avios partner pricing changes

As far as I can see, the new pricing is not available anywhere on ba.comThe reward calculator only has the current prices.

My best guess, as part of BA’s continual efforts to make the Avios programme too confusing for anyone without a PhD in Mathematics, is that we will now have three levels of pricing:

off-peak for flights on BA

peak for flights on BA

pricing for flights on partner airlines

What is NOT clear is whether the current sector-by-sector pricing will remain as it is, or if we will move back to origin-to-destination pricing where the cost is driven by the overall distance and not the cost of each individual leg.

I don’t see a huge amount of logic to this.  All I can think of is that – because taxes are generally lower on partner flights which don’t touch the UK – BA saw an opportunity to whack up the cost because they still look a bargain compared to ex-UK flights.

Anyway …. the little we know can be read here at ba.com.

PS.  On the positive side, if this is genuinely the only change which is going to be made to Avios in the medium term then it won’t impact too many people based in the UK.  We have already seen, for example, BA charging higher taxes and charges to US residents flying to the UK compared to UK residents flying to the US.  I wouldn’t necessarily believe that though.

I got the email, read the links and learned nothing. The prices quoted in the FAQ look about right for current taxes, fees and charges. We paid £28 for HKG to SIN on Cathay and £4 or so for LGA-CMH with American in the last few months; both were one way tickets.

Then I saw your tweeted link to this article and I see HFP is none the wiser either…

    • BlueHorizonuk says:

BA being very vague so no-one knows anything. The fact that IAG airlines are not changing will mean that is most likely a separate reward chart for non-IAG airlines and at much higher redemption rates.

They want you to use the Avios on IAG.

  • Nick says:

Hmmmm. No impact for me in the short term as I rarely use my avios for anything other than RFS or 241 vouchers, but you never know what you may want in the future and so any increase in price is always concerning. I am, of course, assuming that they will bump up pricing rather than down!

    • Lady London says:

They might lower just one price, on a Tuesday, in any month without an ‘r’ in it, on a route no one flies much, provided you book 60 days ahead and it won’t be refundable or cancelable.

  • Ryan says:

Has the number of avios required for redemption gone up? LHR-Pula in club is showing as 25,500 avios + £50 pp, or 23,000 avios + £80 pp. I can’t recall what the pricing was when I checked a few weeks ago……in the above scenario, which is the best value? The latter is 3500 avios for £30…. Thanks!

  • LewisB says:

Best get in quick with those Qatar bookings I wanted to make then…

  • pointsarb says:

Have been searching for some internal flights from within U.S last few days and conveniently (for BA) no availability is showing. I wonder if availability will now suddenly appear after 30/05 at the new partner rates 🙁

    • Lady London says:

You often had to phone for these anyway.
If I were you I’d get phoning.

      • pointsarb says:

Wan’t aware you needed to phone, have previously always relied on online availability (showing on BAEC) for inventory on AA within U.S. I’ll get phoning thanks!

        • pointsarb says:

          * wasn’t

        • Steve-B says:

I’ve always looked first on AA website for redemption availability, remembering you can only book MileSAAver awards with Avios. If you don’t see any of these for the dates you want, no point in calling.

        • Lady London says:

Theoretically you can see online but IME not always. Just phone them and tell them youve tried the website and you need to know is website not working or is there just no availability.

  • McDuck says:

Another nail in the coffin of points collecting.

  • Cam says:

Just got the email. They’re clearly trying to get in under a 30 day notice period. It is actually unhelpful and a PR disaster not to provide details. Not unlike Brexit….

More support for switching my primary loyalty from BA to TK, after 11 years of BA Gold. I just flew LHR-IST-xxx return on TK in J, four very pleasant mid haul segments on 2 x 777 and 2 x A330. One of the A330s was due for an interior refresh, and the IFE on the other looked to be running on Windows 97, but all four flights had flat beds, good food, and attentive service. And that, plus an LHR-IST return, satisfied my TK Elite status match from BA. Going long haul eastbound I’d still likely prefer QR or CX for true long haul J, but TK is good enough, and generally priced competitively.

    • John says:

TK is pretty good as an airline (though some people are, rightfully in my view, concerned about their safety culture) but just wait until you try to redeem your TK miles.

      • Lady London says:

Apparently TK ground service or help in irrops is not well commented.
They’re all right as long as the sun shines I suppose.

  • BlueThroughCrimp says:

No email so far, and I’ve redeemed in the past on the LAN MAD-FRA, and have a future SIN-HKG in J on CX.
£37.30 in TFCs (plus £50 as it used up the last of the Avios).
It’s now £41.30 for the same redemption.
