LAST DAY: Get a 50% bonus when you buy Avios

Today – Thursday – is the last day to take part in the latest British Airways ‘buy Avios’ bonus promotion.

This is in conjunction with the ‘10% to 50% discount on Avios reward flights’ offer which also ends today.  However, I would be a little wary buying Avios today in order to make a booking via the reward flight sale as there is no guarantee that the Avios will post to your account by the end of the day.

Until tonight, 21st November, you will receive 50% bonus Avios when you buy or gift points.

This is as high a bonus as we see these days and there is no minimum purchase.  Even better, the bonus kicks in with the smallest 1,000 Avios transaction.  You need to visit via this page in order to buy.

British Airways has increased the number of Avios you can buy under this deal – the cap is now 200,000 points per year!  This means that, with the bonus, you will receive 300,000 Avios for a whopping £3,215.

What does it cost to buy Avios?

In general, you will pay around 1.1p per Avios under this offer.  Based on my spreadsheet of the last 7 million Avios I redeemed, I got 1.15p of value.  This is using very conservative valuations for the flights booked, eg I value a Business Class flight to Dubai at £1,500 because even if BA isn’t charging that there is usually a deal with a secondary airline.

I am not a buyer at 1.1p.  However, as my core article on ‘What is an Avios worth?’ shows, it is easy to get a lot more than 1.1p.  My valuation is low because I do a lot of Gold Priority Rewards (using double Avios to force open a seat, mainly due to school holiday restrictions) and don’t always have a BA Amex 2-4-1 voucher to use.  I also tend to use Avios irrespective of the value, because I am sitting on a lot of them.  If you are strategic you will do far better than me.

This HFP article from our ‘Avios Redemption University’ series shows you which is the cheapest way to buy Avios points from all of the options available.

The link to buy is here.  You need to buy TODAY if you want to take part.

  1. Interested as to why would you be wary of buying them to use today? I regularly buy points whilst on the phone to BA CS agents and they have always posted within minutes, if not seconds. Do others have different experiences?

    • Legal action from HFP readers in case they don’t 🙂

I agree that they SHOULD post today but with up to £3,000 at stake ….

  2. Just out of interest how often do these buy Avios bonuses come up? I don’t particularly need Avios at the moment, but just wondering if I should buy now should this change?

Also – is there likely to be another deal offered next week for black Friday on Avios?

    • Shoestring says:

      twice a year minimum

plus on Iberia, BA and AerClub so you get 6 opps (often overlapping)

    • More often than they used to, is the honest answer. Something every 3 months or so recently. And when there is no BA offer, there may be an Aer Lingus or Iberia offer.

I’d be surprised if it was back for Black Friday. BF activity seems more muted this year. People seem to be spreading out their promotions, eg Priority Pass running an offer for all of November. Problem with BF is that you can’t make yourself heard – last year we ran 5 articles and people were only getting 1 or 2 paragraphs each however good the deal. That’s not the sort of PR companies are hoping for.

  3. Newbie here. will this work in conjunction with the AMEX offer of get 1000 Avios with £100 spend?

  4. Malaysia says:

First time participated in the offer to buy 9,000 Avios for £110 to top up my BAEC account. Avios were credited almost immediately.
