World of Hyatt adds peak room pricing – and improves ‘in hotel’ redemptions

World of Hyatt has announced some fundamental changes to their programme.

To be honest, it is not the end of the world by any means and much of the value in the scheme will remain.  It’s only a shame that Hyatt points are so hard to earn if you are UK based ….

World of Hyatt to introduce peak and off-peak pricing

The main change is that Hyatt is following Marriott Bonvoy and introducing peak and off-peak pricing.  This will take effect from March 2020.

World of Hyatt

There are three things worth noting here:

if you have an existing redemption booking which moves to off-peak, Hyatt will automatically refund the difference – this means that you shouldn’t worry about making World of Hyatt redemptions now which you may possibly have to otherwise rebook

peak and off-peak dates will be fixed.  This may sound logical (it is how BA Executive Club and Virgin Flying Club work) but Marriott Bonvoy took a different track, resetting peak and off-peak dates each month.  This means that you won’t need to continually recheck your booking to see if the price has moved down.

peak and off-peak dates will be set by ‘geographic area’, and not on a hotel-by-hotel basis

Here is the new chart, which is on hyatt.com here (click to enlarge):

New World of Hyatt peak and offpeak pricing

The 40,000 points category is only used for partner hotels such as Small Luxury Hotels of the World.  For the core Hyatt estate, you won’t see the best Park Hyatt hotels moving more than 5,000 points, from 30,000 to 35,000.  Even then, this will only be on peak dates.  As I said, it could be worse.

In-hotel redemptions suddenly become potentially worthwhile

Hyatt has clearly realised that no-one was using the option of redeeming points for hotel credit because it was such pathetic value.

This will change on 29th January, and it will easily be the most valuable ‘in hotel’ offer of all of the major chains.  Take a look here:

Hyatt in-hotel redemption pricing

At the bottom end of the scale, you can redeem 1,000 World of Hyatt points for a $10 credit.  This is 0.78p per point.

Given that I have a very conservative 1p valuation for a Hyatt point, this isn’t bad.

However, at the top end, you are getting $1,000 of credit for 65,000 points.  This is 1.20p per point.

This is very, very good, although it is rare that you will have $1,000 of extra charges during a stay unless it is at a resort.

I clearly need to increase my World of Hyatt points valuation to somewhere nearer 1.20p per point, as this is now the floor level at £1 = $1.28.

Reminder: you can still buy Hyatt points with a 40% bonus

If you want to lock in some bookings before peak pricing comes in, you can get a 40% bonus when you buy World of Hyatt points before 31st December.

This may well be the last bonus before peak pricing launches.  Even if it isn’t, it makes sense to use your 2019 ‘buy points’ allowance now to give you additional flexibility to buy more points in 2020 if needed.

You can buy Hyatt points via this link here.

Shame Hyatt show such little interest in the UK market. I love Hyatt but very rarely stay at one. I stick with chains that offer ways to earn points in the UK outside other than purely hotel spend.

  • Newbie A says:

    Morning Rob,

Can you please explain this sentence under the Hyatt Prive part again: ”and pay just 35,000 points (the cost of settling a $500 bill)”. In your example, you have already paid cash so why would there be an opportunity to pay with points too? Or is the actual payment settled at check out and not time of booking?

    Thanks.

    • Shoestring says:

yep it looks as if the points can be used for: Dining, Spa & More awards will soon provide more value.
You can enjoy up to 50% more starting January 29, 2020, when you use points for U.S. Dollar credits toward dining, spa, in-room purchases and more.

ie costs you incur at the hotel but not the initial room cost

    • TGLoyalty says:

Prive bookings are settled at checkout but I don’t think you can use the points for room costs just incidentals

  • iluo says:

Not sure how many people in the UK have world of Hyatt memberships ? it’s so hard to collect points from the UK… I am not only talking about luck of properties.. No credit card.. no transfer from Amex

    • Rob says:

Agreed, it is a nice thing. The only reason I have some is that Award Wallet give a handful when readers sign up. It is worth buying the points at times however if you know you will redeem them immediately.

  • ADRIAN BENNETT says:

Rob what is your point valuation for Hyatt?

    • Rob says:

      1p

It is easy to find places where you can beat this, but I always found 1p to be ok.

As a comparison, in the ‘40% bonus points’ cash sales, you are paying 1.3p so you can’t really value them any higher (you can’t value something at more than you can buy it for).

      • Chrisasaurus says:

Um… isnt the aim of the game to pay less for something than you value it at?

I admit to not being the world’s greatest businessman, but…

        • Shoestring says:

element of semantics? & word order?

eg I *could* say I value my Avios at 4p, because I very often get 4p of value (peak RFS flights beginning & end of school hols, so cash prices are usually high)

but in reality 1p does me fine as an Avios point value for those in my Avios bank, ie I wouldn’t dream about using them (voluntarily!) for flights/ hotels/ wine etc if the value I got back were under 1p/ point – I’d prefer to pay cash instead & keep my Avios for the more lucrative opportunities

        • Rob says:

What I mean is that some people go around saying they value Hyatt points at 2p because they always redeem 30k for PH New York when room rates are £600 equivalent. I argue you can’t do this when you can buy the points for 1.3p.

          • The Original David says:

So if you go to Morrisons and buy a £100 Amazon card for £90 (after an Amex offer), would you only value your £100 Amazon credit at £90?

  • tony says:

Note Hyatt Privee isn’t a flat $100 credit. I’ve got a stay coming up at the Grand Hyatt in Macau and it’s only giving me a $50 F&B credit.

  • harry hv says:

Peak Pricing = Ugly devaluation. The points in your pocket HAVE been devalued. And now another dodgy trick – valuing points by what they buy in the overinflated in-hotel-prices for F&B.

  • Simon says:

I managed to get 18k of points from a couple of stays at the Bellagio by giving my Hyatt number on check in. The 2nd stay qualified for double points in the latest Hyatt promo.
