A reader dropped me a note to point out that Marriott Bonvoy has recently clarified the wording on when you can earn Bonvoy points from eating or drinking at its hotels.
Here is the new wording, which came into effect a couple of months ago:
ii. Earning at restaurants without a stay is offered:
(1) In Asia Pacific: at Participating Brands of the Loyalty Program, except for Moxy, Element, Marriott Vacation Club, Design Hotels, Marriott Executive Apartments and ExecuStay, and include restaurants and bars listed on https://marriottbonvoyasia.com/R+B (some exclusions may apply); and
(2) In the Americas, Europe, the Middle East and Africa: at restaurants and bars at the following Participating Brands of the Loyalty Program: St. Regis, The Luxury Collection, W, Sheraton, Le Méridien, Westin, Tribute Portfolio, Four Points, Aloft and Element
As you can see, the core Marriott brand is excluded in Europe, which is odd. Admittedly there are another 20 brands which are excluded too, but I would have expected Marriott to be there.
The list of brands where you CAN earn points from a meal in Europe, without booking a room, runs from the top end (St Regis, The Luxury Collection) to the lower end (Aloft). These are all ex-Starwood brands.
As with the Bonvoy free breakfast benefit rules – which are so complex that I managed to write a full article on how they work – Marriott Bonvoy is struggling to present a simplified offering to members in the face of numerous different agreements signed with hotel owners under both Marriott and Starwood ownership.
