Coronavirus: Oman, Norway, Cyprus and Czech Republic block UK travellers

Three more countries have placed restrictions on UK travellers tonight due to coronavirus, which effectively means that they are off-limits to most of us.  This is on top of the Czech Republic which announced restrictions earlier today.

Cyprus

From Saturday, the United Kingdom will become a ‘Category 2’ country due to the spread of coronavirus here.

This means, should you choose to fly from the UK, you will be subject on arrival to:

Self-isolation under telephone monitoring at home or premises to be suggested by Health Ministry (restrict close contact and movement, keep basic rules of hygiene and monitor and report symptoms to  the call centre 1420) for 14 days”

Cyprus attempted to move the UK into Category 2 earlier this week but had to pull back after consternation from the local travel industry.  The Government clearly believes that it now has no choice.

Oman

Oman is suspending all tourist visas for one month from Sunday 15th March.

All cruise ships have been banned from visiting, all sports activities have been curtailed and cinemas will be closed, amongst other measures.

Norway

Effective immediately, all visitors to Norway from outside the Nordic countries will be quarantined.

Most attractions, ski resorts, and venues are now closed, and most activities and events are cancelled.  The ban will run until at least 26th March.

Czech Republic

The Czech Republic will close its land borders to travellers crossing from Germany and Austria at midnight on Saturday (ie Friday night) as it struggles to deal with coronavirus.

The country will ban travel to and from 15 countries seen as posing a high risk of infection.

The list includes the UK, Italy, Sweden, Norway, France, Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Denmark, Switzerland, China, Korea and Iran.  The only exceptions will be for foreigners with residency in the Czech Republic and to cross-border workers.

    🙂

    • Rob says:

Doesn’t make us any money unfortunately – ad revenues are down about 30% per page due to lack of competition for Google slots and BA has pulled their sale ads!

      • Russ 😷 says:

Anything we can do to assist? Give us a clue…

      • Bob says:

        You are not alone.

I have a loss of 100% of my revenue since the crisis of end of 2008.
And I have not recovered since then, meaning 11 years now.

That’s how neo-liberalism work if I understand well.

I have learnt to live in a different way.

        😉

      • Chas says:

It may not be much of a consolation in the short term Rob, but I suspect that your exceptional coverage of this crisis is significantly growing your loyal readership, which will be even more attractive to your advertisers in the medium term.

      • Peter K says:

I bought some ear plugs for £3.34 on Amazon using your affiliate link if that’s any consolation 😁

        • Sloth says:

Should have rounded it up to a tenner with some hand sanitiser…

          • Novice says:

That is if you can get hold of the hand sanitiser you mean.

Also if you do find it, its way more than a tenner atm as humans have just discovered hand hygiene.

and all very welcome in keeping us informed and up to speed.. I’m sitting it out until next week before taking action ( or inaction) with our trip to Monaco. So far flights and hotel etc still operating, but I’d rather re schedule …at no extra cost…..or get a refund. Still, a week to go, and it could all change.

  • Jack Taylor says:

Does that mean our flight to Oman will go ahead or won’t go ahead?! The ban comes into effect on the 15th, we land on the 14th 🤔

  • James T says:

Thank you very much for all of these updates – great job!

Going to Oslo over Easter… Hopefully this isn’t extended but I’m not holding out much hope.

    • Emma says:

We’re due to fly to Oslo 7th April and I can’t see is going.

Now just need to find out who covers us! Insurance, credit card or BA as it’s a package through them. Guessing we’ll have to sit tight until nearer the time to see if BA extends its cancellation/amendment policy.

  • Cal says:

Rob, quick question but what about Heathrow Express? I’m guessing the Fixed Day tickets won’t be anyway refundable?

    • Rob says:

Honestly got no idea but probably not, agreed.

      • Stu N says:

If you’re fairly sure you will use them on a specific date worth seeing if you can change them.

Hex may be different but you can change Advance tickets on Avanti and LNER for £10 change fee despite a “No refunds” policy. I’ve done this for some work travel I had booked for this week. l picked days I am very likely to be travelling on in May if situation has improved. If not a £20 change fee to preserve some value on £200 of tickets might be wise, then again it might be throwing good money after bad. We shall see.

        • Anuj says:

If you use Cross Country to book tickets for any train company you can change advance tickets for free and just pay fare difference.

        • John says:

Advance tickets can be changed anywhere for a £10 fee. That does not conflict with a “no refunds” rule!

If you book on Crosscountry’s site you can change for free, but you can’t select seats on non-XC trains, and you have to use e-tickets (which can be displayed on a screen or printed, but not at a station on orange card).

  • DanLondon says:

Sorry to hear about the loss revenue Rob. We are all behind your venture and let us know if we can do anything to boost your business 🙂

    • Peter K says:

Use affiliate links, go the the desktop site rather than mobile, get credit cards via the links.

      • Richard Branson says:

If you would like to contribute to my business I’d be eternally grateful. Rob may be miffed about a 30% drop in revenue but in comparison to me, he’s one of the lucky ones

        • Rob says:

Didn’t say I was miffed! Just mentioned it in passing. No-one is being sent on unpaid leave!

          • Peter K says:

Um Rob, I think “Richard Branson’s” comment was a joke 😁

  • MarianC says:

    Hi Rob.
Guatemala announced yesterday it will ban the entry of citizens of European countries.
I’m due to travel there in June…maybe it will help some other readers of yours.

  • Waribai says:

Had a mileage run planned for 10-15 April
LHR-OSL on BA then OSL-DOH-BKK on QR. Two separate PNRs
Now Qatar are accepting transit passengers but I’m guessing I won’t get to OSL. There was also a schedule change that I never accepted on QR. So, maybe I can get both tickets refunded???

    • chris says:

if your Bangkok ticket is a return; maybe you can’t take it as you cant get back …
