Coronavirus: Oman, Norway, Cyprus and Czech Republic block UK travellers

Three more countries have placed restrictions on UK travellers tonight due to coronavirus, which effectively means that they are off-limits to most of us.  This is on top of the Czech Republic which announced restrictions earlier today.

Cyprus

From Saturday, the United Kingdom will become a ‘Category 2’ country due to the spread of coronavirus here.

This means, should you choose to fly from the UK, you will be subject on arrival to:

Self-isolation under telephone monitoring at home or premises to be suggested by Health Ministry (restrict close contact and movement, keep basic rules of hygiene and monitor and report symptoms to  the call centre 1420) for 14 days”

Cyprus attempted to move the UK into Category 2 earlier this week but had to pull back after consternation from the local travel industry.  The Government clearly believes that it now has no choice.

Oman

Oman is suspending all tourist visas for one month from Sunday 15th March.

All cruise ships have been banned from visiting, all sports activities have been curtailed and cinemas will be closed, amongst other measures.

Norway

Effective immediately, all visitors to Norway from outside the Nordic countries will be quarantined.

Most attractions, ski resorts, and venues are now closed, and most activities and events are cancelled.  The ban will run until at least 26th March.

Czech Republic

The Czech Republic will close its land borders to travellers crossing from Germany and Austria at midnight on Saturday (ie Friday night) as it struggles to deal with coronavirus.

The country will ban travel to and from 15 countries seen as posing a high risk of infection.

The list includes the UK, Italy, Sweden, Norway, France, Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Denmark, Switzerland, China, Korea and Iran.  The only exceptions will be for foreigners with residency in the Czech Republic and to cross-border workers.

i wonder if the admission by the UK Chief Scientific Advisor that the true infection level is probably around 5-10,000 freaked out other countries !

he did say that other countries probably have a similar ratio between reported and actual … but i suspect that part gets lost in translation !!

  • KINGB says:

OT: Quick q, I was booked on a domestic flight from LHR to EDI on the 31st March which got cancelled and I got the option to rebook onto any BA flight to Edinburgh. Since it was the return portion that was cancelled I presume im not eligible for EU261?

Secondly, this means that i’ve now gotten a reduction in avios and teir points made in this booking, presuming BA can’t match it up with the cancelled flight?

  • Hemal says:

I’m due to return to Oslo from Singapore via Doha tomorrow in order to connect to my BA flight to LHR. When I called Qatar they didn’t have this new info on their systems and were not able to help me.

Has anyone seen any news about passengers who are transiting through Norway. I need to figure out what to do as I could be stuck.

    • zee says:

Deb, Im in a similar situation to you in reverse. I fly next week on Qatar back to Oslo from CPT. I was supposed to fly back same day to UK on BA so Im trying to find out if i will get quarantined in Oslo. I cant find the answer but let me know if you figure it out. If anyone has info its much appreciated.

BTW weather in CPT is lovely and there is still toilet paper for sale in the supermarkets! Im buying an extra bag to bring it back and sell it on ebay 😉

    Singapore new restrictions:
« From 15 March 2020, 2359 hours, all new visitors with recent travel history to France, Germany, Italy and Spain within the last 14 days will not be allowed entry into or transit through Singapore. »

No restriction for UK, but it might be relevant to some here.

    • Ann says:

I’m meant to be flying there on 29th via Dubai. I just don’t see it happening now.

  • Simon Cross says:

If a country requires you to go into quarantine on arrival is this grounds for cancelling the trip and claiming on travel insurance?

    • meta says:

I guess it also depends on FCO advice which may/may not be slow to update. And obviously some insurances don’t even cover FCO advice, so better check your policy.

  • PlaneSpeaking says:

We’re due in Cyprus at the end of April for 8 nights. We’re happy to self-isolate in our apartment but will we be stopped from leaving the country on May 3 and forced to stay the full 2 weeks?

    • meta says:

It’s in more than and a month till then. Sit and monitor the situation for your case. No one knows what will towards the end of April/beginning of May.

      • PlaneSpeaking says:

Good advice, thanks Meta. Hopefully, things will have calmed down by then.

    • Mikel says:

Update, this only refers to northern Cyprus only !!!

      • ian_h says:

I’m in Cyprus now and its 100% affecting the Republic of Cyprus the Ministry of Health is part of the official Govt. The checkpoints to the occupied areas are already closed.

        • Cam says:

The link in the HFP article is to the Republic of Cyprus, not Northern Cyprus (notwithstanding the text of the article). There are no direct flights from the U.K. to Northern Cyprus.

    • Ken says:

Will he call it the pussycat virus ?

      • Shoestring says:

yes, in so many words: ‘very mild for the vast majority of people’ (I paraphrase)

        • ken says:

He actually spoke about the population getting herd immunity (> 60% of population getting mild form).

Somewhat different from your “they won’t get pussycat virus – something like 99.99% chance they won’t get it”

          Now, who to believe ?

          • Shoestring says:

he spoke about herd immunity but he also said vast majority of people will also only get a mild version of Coronavirus – try & listen more carefully as you have got it wrong & slighted me unnecessarily through bad listening

  • Mikel says:

Rob, can you please clarify the position on Cyprus as the FCO states to northern Cyprus
