Workaround found. How to trigger an online British Airways flight refund using Google Chrome

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Our main article today is about BA’s unwillingness to let you claim an online cash refund for an Avios flight.

We have now found a way of triggering a cash refund – as opposed to a voucher – without calling British Airways (and waiting hours in the queue …..)

This next chunk of text is for getting a refund of your taxes on Avios bookings which have not yet been cancelled by BA.

For a refund on a CASH or Avios BA flight booking which has been cancelled, scroll down this page and read the PS. at the bottom.

If you have a CASH BA flight booking which is NOT showing as cancelled, do NOT follow any of the advice on this page.  You are not yet able to get a cash refund.  You either need to accept the British Airways travel voucher offered or wait until your flight is cancelled and then follow the steps above.

To be clear:

Got an Avios booking which is not yet cancelled?  Read on

Got an Avios booking which is cancelled?  Go to the PS at the bottom

Got a cash booking which is cancelled?  Go to the PS at the bottom

Got a cash booking which is not yet cancelled?   Sorry, there is no way of getting a cash refund.  You need to accept the BA voucher or wait for your flight to be cancelled.

How can you stop British Airways forcing a flight voucher on you?

In summary ….. if you turn off JavaScript in Google Chrome then ba.com will take you to the full cancellation page.

Here’s proof it works:

How to trigger an online Avios flight refund using Google Chrome

This is how to do it, using the Google Chrome broswer.

Go into ‘Manage My Booking’ on ba.com and select ‘Cancellation options for this booking’.  You must be logged in and using the BA account of the person who booked, ie the person who is named on the confirmation email.

You are taken to the ‘consent’ screen:

How to trigger an online Avios flight refund using Google Chrome

Do NOT continue the process, as you will only be taken to the ‘Future Travel Voucher’ page which you don’t want.  In order to cancel, you need to first disable JavaScript in Chrome.  (If you are not using Chrome, you need to find out how your browser handles JavaScript.)

This is how you do it:

Click the ‘three dots’ in the top right corner of Chrome

Scroll down to ‘Settings’ and click – this opens a new ‘Settings’ page

Click ‘Privacy & Security’ in the left menu – this brings the ‘Privacy & Security’ section to the top

Click ‘Site Settings’ in the ‘Privacy & Security’ section

Scroll down to the ‘Permissions’ section and click ‘JavaScript’

Turn off JavaScript by toggling the ‘Allowed’ button

Do NOT close the window as you need to turn it back on later.  Switch back to the window where you have the ba.com ‘Consent’ page open.  Tick the ‘Please tick here’ box and click ‘Continue’.

You will now be on the standard cash cancellation screen.

Turn JavaScript back on.

You can cancel your booking for a full cash refund of your taxes, and with your Avios returned.

But don’t forget ….

You will be still be paying the £35 per person cancellation fee on a long-haul booking.  If you want to avoid this, you need to wait until BA cancels your flight automatically, assuming it does not operate.

If you paid for seat selection, you LOSE this money if you cancel.  You may prefer to take the travel voucher as I believe the seat selection value is retained, either as part of the voucher or as a credit for free seat selection when you rebook.

PS.  How to get a refund for a CASH British Airways booking

If you are looking to refund a CASH booking which has already been cancelled, this is an alternative set of steps:

1) Go into Manage My Booking on ba.com and select the flight shown as cancelled

2) Go into your browser’s settings and disable JavaScript – for Chrome, follow the instructions I outlined earlier in this article for cancelling an Avios booking

3) Go back to ‘Manage My Booking’ and click on the ‘Cancel and Refund’ button which is just under the cancellation notice

4) Confirm that you now see the correct cash refund form and not the voucher refund form

5) Turn JavaScript back on in your browser settings

6) Click on the “Yes” radio button to select that you are a person in the booking

7) When nothing happens press “Enter” on your keyboard. (this works in Firefox and Chrome). The page refreshes and shows an error at the top of the page “email address invalid”

8) Click on the “Yes” radio button again

9) Complete and submit the form

You will see this screen:

British Airways cancellation

For absolute clarity, do NOT cancel a CASH flight if you have not received an email from British Airways saying that your flight is cancelled.  If your flight is still showing as operating, cancelling means you lose EVERYTHING except a nominal amount in taxes.

  • Brian C says:

Just to confirm the workaround is still working for cancelling rewards flights, as at yesterday evening (4th). After a false start, not stopping/starting java at the right point, it worked and I got points back almost instantly.

  • Keith says:

All I get on “My Booking” is it stating that my flight is cancelled. I get no other options. I must admit that I am getting a little fed up now. It has been cancelled for over 2 weeks now but BA system is not fit for purpose. Of course I would love to phone them but that system is also not fit for purpose as it cuts you off whenever you call a number. So at the moment I am stuck. BA have my 2.5 grand and I have nothing. Getting a little worried now.

  • David Bevan says:

    Hi

Which number did you call please as just cuts off every time I try

  • Thomas says:

I was able to refund my cash booking with your instructions. Thank you so much for helping people! I appreciate your work!

    • NigelT says:

I cancelled one of my cash BA flights using the work around but still no refund. Any experience on here of how long it normally takes?

      • Darkwarrior says:

I called them 72 hrs before flight and this is after doing javascript and waiting 10 days or so. Avios and voucher immediately credited. Still waiting for credit card refund.

        • Andy says:

I cancelled using the work around about two weeks ago. Still nothing – no voucher, no avios and no refund. My account shows ‘processing a cancellation’. I’m going to have to bite the bullet and call aren’t I?

          • Rob says:

I got my Avios on Saturday for a cancellation I did two weeks ago. Not got the cash yet but you’d expect a lag. I’d give it a bit longer. On the other hand, as you’re clearly up early, calling BA as soon as they open (7.30?) may result in a short wait.

          • Trudi Sully says:

Likewise. Just over two weeks. I had an email confirming it was being processed but nothing since. I’ve tried calling many times but can’t get through. My flight would’ve been last week so I can’t even see a status against ‘my bookings’ now. I’m getting really anxious about getting my money back now. Please do post if you get any more news.

        • Claudia says:

Which phone did you call them? I have been trying to contact them for the last 8 days I they never picked up my call. My flight was cancelled and I requested my refund voucher (too bad I did not know about the possibility requesting cash refund) 15 days ago, I still have not heard back from them. My flight is in 5 days and I am getting worried….

          • Rhys says:

0800 727 800. Don’t select any of the options – just hold on. Eventually you’ll hear the usual BA hold music. Took me 15 mins to get through today.

  • LK says:

I just tried to do this for a cash flights that have been cancelled and I dont see the cancel and refund button. Please help, thank you.

    • Guy M says:

Exactly the same experience just now unfortunately, just after midnight / start of 6 April.

Not sure Rob / Antonio’s workaround is valid anymore … BA must have gotten wise to it and put a further spanner in the works ! ;-(

      Cheers
      G

      • Rob says:

If you look at the comments from last to first people keep saying it works every day – I would downgrade the article if we had a day when everyone said it was dead.

        • Guy M says:

I think fair to say it is a mixed bag on the successes right now. BA.com *yet again* obviously not covering itself in glory …

Better news/another data point to add on telephoning BA (I ran out of patience with online route) …

I got through after five mins holding time — explained situation and BA agent simply refunded the avios and TFCs minus the £35 fee. Avios back in account immediately, no issues. Refund to follow onto card within ten days max is advice. Email immediately afterwards to confirm cancellation and refund of booking. All as it should be!

          Cheers
          G

  • Hugh says:

Not working for me. With Javascipt disabled I just get a page that asks me to confirm if I am a passenger on the booking with no option other than to confirm and go back. If I switch Javascript off it goes to the Voucher Page.

    • Guy M says:

As just replied to LK … Exactly the same experience as you Hugh just now unfortunately, just after midnight / start of 6 April.

Not sure Rob / Antonio’s workaround is valid anymore … BA must have gotten wise to it and put a further spanner in the works ! ;-(

    • Muzer says:

Did you try re-enabling javascript, selecting a form field and then pressing enter on that page?

      • Hugh says:

I posted yesterday that this was not working. I have just tried again following a tip from Muzer and I think it is working. The problem was I did not realise I was on the refund form as 90% of it was hidden! For anyone else who thinks its not working the trick is to press Enter on the keyboard, not to select an option using your mouse! To be fair this was described in the instructions, I just didn’t read them properly!

The question I still have though is around Avios bookings. The Ts and Cs make no mention of getting my Avios back and the last llne says…..If these items were booked with Avios and you are an Executive Club member, follow the ‘View my bookings’ link from your account home page.

What does that line mean? Am I on the right form. Will I get my Avios back?

  • E says:

Didn’t work for me either yesterday despite following the instructions.

    • Lady London says:

Is it possible BA might not have replicated the refund-blocking code to all versions of their website around the world? I’m lucky enough not to have any bookings with BA right no one but personally I think I might give this workround a test by logging on in, say, Bolivia or the Cook Islands, or other small remote republics, with my vpn to the BA website and giving the workround a careful try.

  • Bernard Price says:

Thank you. I have already taken this advice.
