This is the only way left to get an online refund for a British Airways Avios flight

Are you trying to get a refund on a British Airways Avios flight ticket?  There is still one way – and only one way – to get a refund online.

This only applies to tickets where your Avios flight has not been cancelled yet.  If it has been cancelled, you need to join the queue for the British Airways call centre to request a cash and Avios refund if you don’t want a voucher.

EDIT:  This route no longer works.  Not surprisingly, BA closed it within 48 hours of this article being published.

I strongly recommend NOT taking a voucher on an Avios ticket.  Your Avios and, if applicable, your British Airways American Express 2-4-1 voucher are NOT returned separately if you take the voucher.  You get a voucher which contains Avios and the 2-4-1 and the cash element.  The voucher will expire after 12 months from your original flight date – and you must return by that date, not fly out – so you are at real risk of losing your Avios permanently.  Take the cash.

How can I claim an online refund for an Avios flight?

British Airways has deliberately hijacked its own website to stop the online cancellation form appearing.

On 19th March we published an article explaining how to get around this and get an online British Airways flight refund by amending the javascript settings in your internet browser.  It took them some time, but British Airways has now managed to block this workaround for desktop computers.

They forget to block the workaround for iPhones, however.  It does NOT work on iPads.

If you have an iPhone, you can still cancel an Avios redemption flight online, as long as the flight is still operating.

There’s one thing to note.  When you cancel online, your refund is queued for manual cancellation.  It could take a couple of weeks to get the Avios back in your account, with the money taking even longer.  If you call BA, the Avios are returned immediately, although you must still wait for the cash.  If you want to rebook immediately, you need to call instead.

As your flight has not yet been cancelled by BA, cancellation fees will still be due.  The only way to avoid paying the cancellation fee (£35 per person on long haul flights, £1 or £35 on short haul flights depending on when you booked) is to wait and hope that British Airways cancels your flight which allows you to have a fee-free refund.

  • Jason Titter says:

Does this mean if BA cancel the flight they are no longer putting you on other flights, even opening up revenue seats?
I have a trip to MEX in May in First that will likely get cancelled. Booked on a 2-4-1 (Companion Voucher). Historically if a flights are cancelled BA have been accommodating in getting a new flight that suits my plans. Is this no longer an option? The GGL Priority Line has a decent answering time, so this is my preferred option for a later date.

    • Anna says:

In the unlikely event of you being able to re-route (many countries have banned UK visitors), you are probably not going to be insured unless the FCO significantly changes it’s advice on travel in the next couple of weeks.

      • Anna says:

Though it’s not clear if you are asking for a re-route on the same dates on another airline (unlikely) or at a later date on BA (should be an option).

    • AJA says:

Technically you can still ask to be re-routed for any dates between -3 and +14 days of your original flight but as Anna says that assumes there are still flights going to Mexico and FCO advice against flying is lifted and Mexico allows you to enter without being quarantined on arrival.

      • Lady London says:

You can also ask to be rebooked same route when you can travel again that suits you. Text of EC261 gives you that right. In the case of Mexico though might be too early to know what flights are going to be available.

        • AJA says:

Yes but in choosing to travel at a later more convenient date there has to be reward seat availability. They don’t allow you to just book a revenue seat like they do within the 14 days. This is a problem if your booking is in First where they don’t guarantee any availability.

  • Andy says:

How annoying – can’t get it to work on an ipad and we don’t have an iphone.

  • Tammy says:

    Thanks for the instructions!
Unfortunately stops work from step 7 (no consent page)
Have tried both on iPad and iPhones
Anyone got this to work today past step 7 – worried BA have caughtened on.

    • Sloth says:

The steps have been done slightly wrong. You need to disable Javacript AFTER you have selected the cancel my booking option, then you will see the consent page and then you disable JavaScript before clicking continue

  • Gavin says:

A couple of weeks ago, a friend requested vouchers for 2 cancelled Avios flights that I had booked for myself and him. I wasn’t aware he’d done it until a couple of days ago when BA refused me a refund. Obviously I don’t want the vouchers and it’s annoying that a booking made with my money and Avios can be converted to a voucher without my consent. Do I have any comeback with BA on this?

    • Anna says:

I think the issue is with your friend, unfortunately, when altering a booking for more than one person you are usually required to tick a box saying you have consent from everyone else in your party. He could try and persuade BA to change the voucher for cash if he was misled about the terms of the voucher, but I imagine they will be very difficult to deal with on this.

    • Rob says:

Did BA ask if he had consent?

      • Gavin says:

Yes I assume so, as you have to tick a box on the voucher application form. He didn’t actually have consent though!

        • TGLoyalty says:

Very strange. I’ve always treated it as the person who has booked has the consent so strange move from your friend.

I assuming they didn’t understand what they were agreeing to but unfortunately I don’t think your friends ignorance will change BA’s mind. Perhaps try the person on flyertalk or via twitter to see if you can get someone with a bit more sway to have a look.

          • Charlieface says:

Doesn’t EC261 demand very strong consent?

          • Gavin says:

Thanks, yes he assumed the voucher was the only option, and also was not even aware that I was on the same booking and had done the booking for us (I booked them almost a year ago).

  • memesweeper says:

Thanks to Rob and everyone who has trial-and-errored their way to working this out. Sadly just cancelled my planned Avios trip to Catania later this year. Ironically BAs tactics in trying to make it harder to get a refund have provoked me to cancel now — probably the opposite of what they want to have happen.

    • Harry T says:

Rightly or wrongly, I think if they had behaved more professionally and reasonably, some of their more knowledgable customers might have taken a voucher, especially if offered a bonus on it. But they’ve destroyed a lot of goodwill with this behaviour. I think it would have been reasonable to implement an easy online refund process, where customers could choose a refund to their credit card, a voucher, or a rerouting/rebooking.

      • Rob says:

If they would refund your Avios and 241 voucher separately, and just given a voucher for the cash with a small incentive, I am sure most would. However, taking a voucher puts your Avios at real risk of expiry in 12 months time.

  • Liz says:

Does anyone know what date BA are up to with the long queue of refunds. If they would update us then we would be a bit more patient. Think I am going to follow @Anna and request a chargeback as I am now at 30 days.

    • Michael C says:

About 3 days ago, I was told “15 business days”, Liz…

      • Robert Rogers says:

I cancelled a 2-4-1 on 25 March – received the cash on 6 April but no sign of the Avios or voucher yet…..so that was 8 business days for the cash and at 10 and still counting for the rest…..

    • Anna says:

Liz – yes 27 days now since I requested my first refund of 3 and no sign of any cash apart from the for the flights I cancelled using the HFP workaround. Amex were great and said my wait was unreasonable!

      • Liz says:

Thanks Anna – will give it a try – never done it before.

        • Anna says:

You can do it yourself on the website but I asked the online chat CSA and he did it then and there for me.

        • Harry T says:

Very straightforward to dispute a charge online and initiate a chargeback.

          • Liz says:

How to do you it online – I am looking at the Amex website and can’t see what to do? Can someone help please?

          • Liz says:

I’ve found it – had to do 4 separate claims – hope I’ve done it right!

  • Robert Rogers says:

Just tried this on iPad and iPhone. No luck. Perhaps they have caught up. I know airlines are in a fight for survival but the capacity of BA to alienate frequent flyers knows no bounds….

    • Waribai says:

There are some anomalies where you won’t get the ‘consent’ page. Some bookings seem to be coded slightly differently.

    • Sloth says:

The steps have been done slightly wrong. You need to disable Javacript AFTER you have selected the cancel my booking option, then you will see the consent page and then you disable JavaScript before clicking continue

    • Rob says:

Worked fine at 8.25am on my iPhone, I could replicate what I did last night.

  • Andrew Harrison says:

‘This only applies to tickets where your Avios flight has not been cancelled yet.’

Just to clear this up please… If I cancel my avios flight before BA cancel, this procedure is available on my iphone or ipad…. and will I get charged the £35 fee by BA? Many thanks

    • memesweeper says:

I think what is meant is, if your flight is cancelled you can phone up and ask for a refund (or reroute, or rebooking). No charge for that.

If it’s not a cancelled flight and if you cancel your booking yourself this is the best procedure to follow … for now. BA will doubtless shutdown this ‘loophole’ which enables you to exercise your contractual rights.

      • Lady London says:

Not sure what’s in contractual rights but the right to a cash refund if an airline cancels your flight is definitely in your statutory rights, being European legislation which had been adopted by the UK. Statutory rights supersede your contractual rights.l

        • memesweeper says:

The T&Cs for Avios bookings include the option to refund all taxes/fees/charges minus the handling fee (£35 in most cases). That’s a contractural right. BA are now trying to replace this with a voucher.

    • Rob says:

      Yes, you pay the fee.
