American Express is rolling out ‘compensation’ deals for Platinum cardholders.

For holders of the personal The Platinum Card, it is fairly simple – American Express is giving you £100.

If you have American Express Business Platinum, this article explains what you are getting instead.

Do I get £100 in cash?

No.  Well, sort of.

£100 free for American Express Platinum cardholders

In order to receive your free £100, you need to spend £100 by 27th August at any combination of:

  • Marks & Spencer
  • Waitrose & Partners
  • Deliveroo
  • Harvey Nichols
  • Apple (online only)

100% of your spending at these shops is returned in the form of statement credit, up to £100 per card.  For clarity, the £100 cap is NOT per shop.  It is cumulative across all five shops above.

What are the restrictions?

There are some, but they are not hugely onerous:

  • M&S exclusions: Bank and Energy services, Bureau de change, Opticians and Petrol stations
  • Waitrose & Partners exclusions: Cellar, Florist, Garden, Pet, Cookery school, foreign currency, Gift Section
  • Harvey Nichols exclusions: International delivery, gift cards, vouchers and dining within restaurant
  • Apple exclusions: Apple iTunes, Apps and Apple Music, Apple Search Ads, Apple Finance and Gift Cards

Here is a key thing to remember.  Waitrose gift vouchers can be used at John Lewis department stores, either online or instore.  If you can get to a Waitrose store but do not want to spend £100 on shopping, you can buy a gift card which should trigger the cashback.  You can then spend this at John Lewis at your convenience.

Do I need to register for this offer?

Yes.

You MUST register your card for this offer.

To register, go to the ‘Offers’ section of your online statement page for your American Express Platinum card.  Scroll down until you see this promotion and click ‘Save To Card’.  You’re good to go!

Virtually all Platinum charge cardholders have this offer.  A small minority do not – it is not clear why.

Can I apply for The Platinum Card now and get this offer?

It isn’t clear.  It runs until 27th August so you would have plenty of time.

However, it depends on American Express adding the deal to the ‘Offers’ tab of your online statement page and we cannot be certain that this will happen for new applicants.  I’m sure we will find out soon enough.

Our full review of The Platinum Card is here if you want to find out more about the card.  You can apply here.

Conclusion

This is clearly a ‘no brainer’ offer for holders of The Platinum Card.  Ensure that you register your card now.  Remember that you have until 27th August to do the relevant spending.

  • Susan says:

Some of us live 50 miles from a Waitrose, JL,Harvey Nicks – and as for Deliveroo – what’s that? Another useless, urban only Amex offer.

    • Andrew says:

M&S, Apple and Harvey Nics all have websites which offer free delivery for the £100 threshold (Apple only available online for everyone). Waitrose offer home delivery for food for most of the country. Deliveroo granted is urban-centric.

    • James says:

And John Lewis isn’t even included in the offer! (Deliveroo is a takeaway food delivery service, they advertise in most commercial breaks at the moment, but maybe you’re more of a BBC/Netflix person)

      • mradey says:

John Lewis is available via gift cards purchased via Waitrose.

  • Eugene OConnell says:

    Update.

Just spoke with Amex, they said it will be back in 72 hours. And only for the Primary

    • Andrew says:

So Monday then, not today/tomorrow as they said previously. Be interesting what they will do with supp card holders who saved the offer yesterday morning and have subsequently spent their £100 and with no direct communication from Amex to cardholders, it would be near impossible for them not to pay out. Should they decide to email all supps who saved the offer and tell them they have revoked it before they spend then they would have more of a leg to stand on.

      • Daniel says:

Mine wasn’t showing this morning but is showing now so maybe check now?

    • Dragonfly says:

Just checked hubby’s card (he is primary card holder) and yes the offer was there. So I have saved it and will use it for grocery shopping at M&S and Waitrose. However, nothing for me as secondary card holder.

  • Samson Jat says:

It’s so amusing that so many people here are getting so upset in Amex about the removal of a free offer they didn’t know existed less than 48 hours ago. Embarrassing and kind of sad really, The sense of entitlement is mind-boggling.

  • James M says:

Just appeared on my offers page, so appears to be back now!

  • raoul says:

Funny that Centurion uk are not running any such promotion! Tad annoyed especially as my annual fee renews this month

  • Cam says:

I received an email this morning offering €100 for purchases at aHarvey Nichols, Uber Eats or Fortnum & Mason. While I had to register through a link in the email, there is no actual offers section in the ICC account website.

When I clicked the link, I was also advised of the double points promo (not previously communicated). Amex communications with the ICC product cts leave a bit to be desired.

  • Antony D'Emanuele says:

Link has come to me but not my wife’s supplementary card…

  • Craig says:

The offer is still showing on all six cards having been saved yesterday, who is going to push the button first?

    • Andrew says:

I took one for the team and did a £100 M&S transaction yesterday on a supp. Didn’t get a ‘used the offer’ email, but then that is intermittent at the best of times. So will see if it auto triggers and then get ready for an argument with Amex, and worst case, I’ve got lots of food which I need anyway.

      • Craig says:

        Much obilged.

        • Stu N says:

I’ve done £100 on supplementary card on Apple UK – no email but will report back on success or otherwise. I’ve got a screen grab of T&Cs just in case….

Figured I should use the Supp one first 😉
