American Express is rolling out ‘compensation’ deals for Platinum cardholders.

For holders of the personal The Platinum Card, it is fairly simple – American Express is giving you £100.

If you have American Express Business Platinum, this article explains what you are getting instead.

Do I get £100 in cash?

No.  Well, sort of.

£100 free for American Express Platinum cardholders

In order to receive your free £100, you need to spend £100 by 27th August at any combination of:

  • Marks & Spencer
  • Waitrose & Partners
  • Deliveroo
  • Harvey Nichols
  • Apple (online only)

100% of your spending at these shops is returned in the form of statement credit, up to £100 per card.  For clarity, the £100 cap is NOT per shop.  It is cumulative across all five shops above.

What are the restrictions?

There are some, but they are not hugely onerous:

  • M&S exclusions: Bank and Energy services, Bureau de change, Opticians and Petrol stations
  • Waitrose & Partners exclusions: Cellar, Florist, Garden, Pet, Cookery school, foreign currency, Gift Section
  • Harvey Nichols exclusions: International delivery, gift cards, vouchers and dining within restaurant
  • Apple exclusions: Apple iTunes, Apps and Apple Music, Apple Search Ads, Apple Finance and Gift Cards

Here is a key thing to remember.  Waitrose gift vouchers can be used at John Lewis department stores, either online or instore.  If you can get to a Waitrose store but do not want to spend £100 on shopping, you can buy a gift card which should trigger the cashback.  You can then spend this at John Lewis at your convenience.

Do I need to register for this offer?

Yes.

You MUST register your card for this offer.

To register, go to the ‘Offers’ section of your online statement page for your American Express Platinum card.  Scroll down until you see this promotion and click ‘Save To Card’.  You’re good to go!

Virtually all Platinum charge cardholders have this offer.  A small minority do not – it is not clear why.

Can I apply for The Platinum Card now and get this offer?

It isn’t clear.  It runs until 27th August so you would have plenty of time.

However, it depends on American Express adding the deal to the ‘Offers’ tab of your online statement page and we cannot be certain that this will happen for new applicants.  I’m sure we will find out soon enough.

Our full review of The Platinum Card is here if you want to find out more about the card.  You can apply here.

Conclusion

This is clearly a ‘no brainer’ offer for holders of The Platinum Card.  Ensure that you register your card now.  Remember that you have until 27th August to do the relevant spending.

I used the offer yesterday before it was pulled and reloaded. I didn’t receive the usual ‘you used this offer’ email, so contacted Live Chat this morning. They had no record of the offer being saved to my card, despite it still showing as being saved online and in my app. They asked me to share my screen with them during the chat, which didn’t work, so I submitted a screenshot via document upload. They said that it would take 48 hours to review the evidence and I should contact them again on Monday morning for an update. I will update here on Monday, after speaking to them.

  • Andrew says:

Email from Amex officially announcing the offer just arrived – no explicit mention of it not applying to supps due to technical errors etc, just the usual only applies to cards you’ve saved it to etc in the micro text at the bottom.

  • General Mayhem says:

Is this a ‘targetted’ Offer or is it for all platinum cardholders? No email and nothing showing as yet.

    • PlaneSpeaking says:

Hi General. I was wondering the same but when I called Amex this morning to ask this very question, they said it was for everyone and it would be applied to my account (still nothing showing though!)

  • Kilburnflyer says:

Datapoint: £100 credit offer saved to my wife’s supplementary Platinum card yesterday morning.
This was visible yesterday evening on her account under saved offers. However, as of 2pm today (Friday 29th) the offer has been removed from her saved offers 🙁

Unfortunately I didn’t get a screenshot of it

    • Andrew says:

Still showing on my supps as saved, but maybe they are removing them in batches. Take your screenshots while you can!

      • BuyEMExternalBonds says:

Or rather use them now if you can

        • Sukes says:

Offer was saved to main plat, supp plat + 2 supp gold yesterday morning and still showing on all. No promo emails received from Amex regarding any card. Have 5min ago made a qualifying purchase on Apple on one of the supp golds. Will let you know what happens next…So far no automatic app notification nor email to say ‘you’ve just used your offer’ etc has been received but these don’t always trigger anyway. For what it’s worth I haven’t (yet) rang to seek redemption points – some people seem to be querying whether this is a factor in being supposedly invited to this offer.

      • kilburnflyer says:

Apologies, the £100 offer is now showing again under saved offers on the supplementary Platinum, might have been a temporary glitch. Have taken screenshots just for precaution

  • Andi Skinner says:

Just spoke to Amex as the £100 offer not showing on my in-line info.

Amex just stated that HFP article is wrong and that offer is NOT for all, but by invitation ONLY.

    • Rob says:

Given the number of people who have it vs the tiny % who say they don’t, I would say 95%+ of readers with a Plat card have the offer. If they didn’t, this thread would be full of moaning!

    • Andrew says:

Was that Brighton or Manilla that told you that – Manilla will be talking from the usual script which is that all offers are by invitation only/targeted; Brighton will have the actual answer related to this specific offer.

    • PlaneSpeaking says:

Amex told me this morning that it is for everyone.

  • Ben says:

I’ve got no offers on my platinum card whatsoever. Sigh.

    • General Mayhem says:

I’m in the same position Ben – the last offer I had was a year or two ago and that was a discount on flowers. So you are not alone!

  • James says:

Can I still call up and get the 20,000 bonus MR points, or is this instead of that?

  • Flying Vet says:

    Hi
Can you buy Waitrose or John Lewis gift vouchers on line to trigger this?

I can see it says gift section of jl excluded but is this gift vouchers or gift type presents you send to people direct like boxed wine bottles etc?

If vouchers are excluded at John Lewis.com are the included at Waitrose.com?

Thanks for any hints, regards Flying Vet

    • Andrew says:

The offer isn’t valid at John Lewis at all, it is valid at Waitrose which in store sells John Lewis Partnership gift cards which are valid at John Lewis stores as well as Waitrose. This is near 100% likely will trigger the offer.
