Get up to £50 American Express cashback with PayPal

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

American Express has launched a cashback deal with PayPal. It is effectively free money if you are targeted for the offer.

There seem to be two versions, one for personal cards and one for business cards.

On my Marriott Bonvoy American Express, I am offered £15 cashback on a £70 PayPal payment.

On my Business Platinum card I am offered £50 cashback on a £250 PayPal payment.

Both offers expire on 4th March. Registrations are limited so register now via your online Amex statement or the app if you are targetted.

It seems that the cashback will trigger irrespective of whether you are sending money to a friend or making a purchase from a retailer. The wording implies that you must hit the spend target in a single transaction.

It isn’t necessary to have a PayPal account to buy something using the PayPal option online. This is a common misconception. You can simply click ‘pay with PayPal’ and enter your card details directly.

Remember that goods purchased via PayPal do not qualify for Section 75 cover if the retailer goes bust or the product is not as you expect.

This doesn’t make any difference compared to paying directly with American Express business cards or charge cards as Section 75 does not cover those anyway. You are giving up coverage if you use PayPal rather than an American Express credit card. PayPal does have its own redress scheme but it is voluntary.

Remember to register now, if targeted, on the American Express website and complete your transaction by 4th March.

Nothing here on either account (Plat and BAPP). I have also complained to Amex’s Exec Office and got told there is nothing wrong with my account. They said they need to re-enroll me in marketing for offers which is absurd as that was already active before. I finally got to use the Holland & Barrett offer which I’d saved months ago to my BAPP, but lo and behold it didn’t trigger. Called Amex only to be told they will add it manually… then a few moments later the rep tells me “you added this offer only today!”. I’ve absolutely had it with Amex. Cards will all be cancelled in a matter of weeks. It seems that they’ve started employing clowns these past few months and if they don’t want my business, there are plenty of competitors that would like it.

Amex customer service has become utterly dire. I spent two months unpicking a reversed chargeback from them, even when the merchant admitted it was at fault and I provided that in writing. It was only when someone senior in the UK got involved that it was resolved, but she admitted she had exactly the same problem with the back office. They were apparently even arguing with her that I wasn’t due the money.

Hopefully it is now resolved. They offered £75 compensation but I had to bankroll them £1200 for 2 months and make in excess of 20 calls to resolve. There’s a definite temptation to contact the ombudsman as had the boot been on the other foot, their fees would be the best part of £1k I reckon.

I’m just sticking with them because there have been some good offers on the card (didn’t get the Marriott £400 one mind) but this paypal one isn’t showing, either…

Are there though? You get angry with Amex fine, but what real alternatives are there? I’ve been trying to get an HSBC Premier account for months. The website says no upgrades, then it says only via branch, but you can’t get an appointment. If you call you wait 30 minutes to speak to someone using a can on a string rather than a telephone. I only want to churn the WE MasterCard why wouldn’t they want me 🙂

      • Rum says:

I have the HSBC card and have so far been quite impressed. I need to do a charge back with it which has been slow thus far, but otherwise I have no issues whatsoever.

    • @mkcol says:

Why wait weeks? Do it now if it’s really that much of an issue.

      • Rum says:

Seriously, I was going to give them a chance but if more offers turn up without including me, I will take my business elsewhere. Make no mistake of that.

  • robman says:

I have the offer on my Amex Platinum main card and supplementary card and my wife’s Amex Gold main card and supplementary card. It looks to have only been added this morning, so hopefully its just a matter of the rollout of the offer and all of you who are missing the offer currently will receive it in due course. The offer on our cards is “Spend £70 and get £15, one time” and the cards we have have very limited spend on them, so I’m not sure what triggers the offers.

  • Dave says:

Is just me? My Amex card haven’t seen an offer for ages, it only get 7 available which will expire soon. Been spending a lot on it

  • Doug M says:

I often feel with these articles Rob is trolling some of his readers. Great fun.

  • Justin says:

Not on my Personal Plat or Gold. However, this was on my Business Gold.

Considering the fee, and lack of usable benefits at this time, I find it utterly ridiculous this was not on the Platinum card.

  • james says:

News must be think when this is a top story and most people don’t even have it. Nothing for me, no Harrods offer, no £400 offer, nothing to see

    • Rob says:

It’s not the top story, its the 4th story!

    • Nick says:

Well, I have to say it, some people really amaze me with their posts! What an inane comment james! Top post for inaneness today!

  • Mco says:

None on any of my cards but then I am not surprised considering I pay via paypal on those cards anyway.

  • Pez says:

Nothing here either, very frustrating. Literally no offers in both business and personal account.
