MBNA Smart Rewards – the new credit card cashback scheme – is now live

Back in November, we tipped you off about the upcoming launch of MBNA Smart Rewards.

This is MBNA’s attempt to compete with Amex’s market-leading cashback offers. It is now active.

Many HfP readers have an MBNA credit card because at one point it issued 13 different airline cards.

MBNA Smart Rewards

With the introduction of the cap on interchange fees, MBNA decided to withdraw from the affinity market and put itself up for sale, eventually being purchased by Lloyds Bank.

When those cards closed, most cardholders were offered a market-leading card called Horizon with no foreign exchange fees and 0.5% cashback. I think most people who got offered it decided to keep it, because it is a decent option for overseas spend.

How does ‘Smart Rewards’ work?

At present, MBNA Smart Rewards is only available via the website. It is apparently coming to the app soon. This is good news because, as the app is OK, I hadn’t used the website for well over a year until I was researching this piece yesterday.

There is more information here on their website and a FAQ here.

When you log in to the website, you will see a reference to ‘Smart Rewards’. Click on that and you will be asked if you want to activate it or not.

As with Amex, you need to manually opt in to each offer that you think may interest you.

Cashback will be added to your card balance once per month. You will be able to see ‘pending’ payments online so you will know that an offer has successfully triggered.

I have seven offers showing at the moment:

  • Paul – 10% back
  • Huel – 10% back
  • Trespass – 10% back
  • Byron – 5% back
  • Europcar – 5% back
  • Land’s End – 15% back
  • Fortnum & Mason – 5% back

One obvious problem is that, as the screenshot shows, it is not immediately clear that you need to opt in. You need to click the little ‘down’ arrow for the registration box to show. I can imagine a lot of people not realising that registration is required.

This clearly isn’t a life-changing selection but, given the current lockdown, it would be unfair to judge how it will develop.

    Excellent.

Only got 2 offers at the moment, Huel and Lands End though. But I haven’t been pushing transactions through it of late.

  • bill says:

i dont have the horizon card, but i do have two mbna cards. neither has any smart rewards on it

  • Navara says:

Decisions decisions £100 or 40,000 Hilton points?

    • Alan says:

If you’re meaning to spend at a hotel personally I’d go £100 as (a) you’ll earn points back on it and (b) 0.25p/Hilton point is a really low valuation (I tend to aim for about 0.4p)

  • RussellH says:

No rewards for me either, but apart from three days ago I have not used the card for nearly a year.

Does anyone have a view as to which is the better value, using a Mastercard with its generally better exchange rate than Visa, or a Horizon Visa with poorer exchange rate but the 0.5% cash return?

    • Travel Strong says:

The exchange rate difference is variable and small, so you’d have to be unlucky for it to be consistently >0.5% worse.

However – on weekdays, and on a currency that has no curve fees (e.g. EUR) – use neither.

Use Curve to Horizon (or any other card of your choice).

In my own tests, Curve beat both MC and VISA rates when making transactions in EUR minutes apart.

    • Travel Strong says:

Sorry. Only read your screen name after replying, and you don’t do smart phones so this wont work for you!

  • ChrisC says:

6 offers all for companies I have never used.

    • Rhys says:

That’s the whole point – companies want to attract new customers!

      • RussellH says:

And if they made offers to cardholders who have not been using the card, then (perhaps) we might start using it again?

      • ChrisC says:

Then give me offers for alternatives to companies that I have used in the 20+ years I’ve had an MBNA card (initially as VS Amex).

Never once have I hired a car so europecar is useless to me – as there is no one to transfer my business from!

Byron – useless as the nearest branch is 50 miles away!

If they want my business then offer me things I can possibly use.

  • Ryan says:

Zero offers for me when I logged in, but then again I can’t complain as they gave me close to £700 back in 2020!

  • the_real_a says:

The problem with rubbish offers is the customer simply stops checking on them… Should have launched with a 10% at a supermarket / free coffee at costa or similar to get some buzz.

  • Alan says:

Opted in yesterday but zero offers showing so far for me. Don’t seem to be missing out on much so far though!
