IHG has a lot of hotels in Dubai but, unlike Marriott or Hilton, it does not have one with direct beach access. This causes problems both for tourist bookings and, in particular, the appeal of IHG Rewards for people who like to holiday in the Middle East.
Things are looking a little more positive. IHG has signed a deal to open a voco hotel on Palm Jumeirah in December.
It will be a relatively small 141 room property set in a new multi-use development on the Palm called Palm West Beach. Palm West Beach gives the impression of being like the Al Seef, City Walk or La Mer developments – effectively a large waterside lesure resort but fully open to the public.
It appears that the same development will also contain a large 470-room hotel called FIVE Palm Jumeirah which is not linked to any international brand.
The area has a beach – see the image below – but it appears that it won’t be exclusive to voco hotel guests, unless a portion is carved out. That said, I am a fan of Al Seef – which now has three Hilton hotels – and an even bigger fan of City Walk, which has a Marriott Autograph property called La Ville.
If you take the hotel and its nearby amenities together, the voco could become the best IHG option in Dubai.
