Pret A Manger is preparing to launch a UK-wide loyalty scheme called ‘Pret Perks’, we can exclusively reveal.

Information is scant so far. It will be based on traditional coffee shop schemes, with customers earning one ‘star’ for every purchase. The slogan is ‘The more you Pret, the more you get’.

Stars can be redeemed for ‘perks’. You will require 10 stars to receive a free product – it isn’t clear what products are included.

It appears that Pret Perks will initially only be available to iPhone users, with the app behind the scheme only being offered through the App Store. You will get one free star for signing up. You need to scan the QR code from the app to collect your ‘stars’.

You will NOT earn ‘stars’ when claiming a free coffee from your subscription unless something else is bought at the same time. All Pret coffee subscribers will receive a nominal one star per month as part of their subscription.

One attempt at gaming the system is already blocked in the rules. Any purchases made in quick succession will be amalgamated together, so you cannot buy a coffee and a sandwich in two transactions and earn two ‘stars’.

Once you have hit 10 ‘stars’, you will have 30 days to claim your free product. Your free gift will expire at this point.

Whilst I will certainly do well out of this scheme – my wife and I probably do 15 Pret visits per week between us, and we would share an account – it seems a bit of a shame in some ways. Pret has always stood aloof from loyalty schemes on the basis that, like Four Seasons or Mandarin Oriental hotels, it didn’t need gimmicks like Pret Perks because the quality of its products was so high.

There is no additional information available at present. The website here is not active and the ‘Pret Perks’ app is not yet loaded into the App Store. It’s also possible that it will use an updated version of the existing Pret app.

More as we get it, since this scheme will clearly be as popular as Avios for our London-based readers ……

Rob the details have been hiding in plain site:

https://www.pret.co.uk/en-GB/legal -> Pret Account and Loyalty

    • Andrew says:

Sounds a bit like the M&S Sparks (although more guaranteed rather than randomly) whereby the “reward” will be an item chosen by them (probably something you don’t normally buy) so if you always buy croissant they’ll offer you a free muffin.

  • Cranzle says:

Whilst I agree they have tried to stand out from the crowd, I wouldn’t agree that the quality of their coffee is so high. Quite the opposite. Just because it’s organic, doesn’t mean it’s high quality.

    • Oh! Matron! says:

It’s so bad, it makes Tarbucks look palatable.

I had a McDonalds coffee the other day: Surprisingly okay

    • Andrew says:

I would agree – I have to order flat white at Pret to make it taste of coffee as a latte is like hot milk.

      • Lady London says:

        Extra shot, always, at Pret.

I hope they’re not going to do anything silly like exclude airport branches.

Pret is also expanding into airports abroad, at least pre-Covid. Their offering very welcome, even if the increases in prices wasn’t. Guessing they will only allow UK branch purchases to count.

  • A says:

I think I’m still banned on my iphone from the pret app…. a few years ago I may have taken the piss with multiple accounts in order to get iirc 10 any size free drinks just for signing up (it was a cold winter).

    • Gormlesstraveller says:

How does this work if you uninstall and install an app – can they see a unique device ID and SIM card phone number?

    • Alex Sm says:

and you still have the same phone as “few years ago”. Poor you….

  • Richie says:

I think we need Pret v Greggs reviews.

    • whiskerxx says:

Happy to say that Pret recently closed my nearest store.
Greggs are currently shopfitting the same premises

  • Andrew says:

Errr Pret is throughout the country in major towns and cities, not just in London! There’s about 8 in Birmingham city centre.

    • Rob says:

They pulled out of a lot of cities outside the M25 during covid.

      • Andrew says:

But lots remain. Pret website lists 10 in Manchester, excluding the ones at the airport….

    • Mr(s) Entitled says:

For the benefit of the majority of HfP readers Birmingham is a city of 1.2m people based to the north of London.

      • Mr(s) Entitled says:

For the benefit of the majority of HfP readers Manchester is a city of 0.6m people based to the north of Birmingham. For information on Birmingham, see above.

        • The Savage Squirrel says:

Seems very small? – Greater Manc is 2M+ after all. Still, probably officially right; for example they do like to pretend that Salford is a different city when it blatantly isn’t. :p

        • Pete M says:

Never heard of these places – thank you, you learn something new every day!

  • Harry Holden says:

Like the city centre office blocks it relies upon, Pret just doesn’t realise it is dying yet.

    • Mr(s) Entitled says:

Or with the laucnh of this scheme, maybe they do.

    • Rob says:

They are active. They are doing implants in Tesco stores now, and are launching a franchise programme. Kings Road was literally out of the door at 8.15 this morning. The snag, as I once read, is that their cost base is so high because of making products on site that you need 4,000 customers per week to break even and this simply isn’t possible in a lot of suburban locations.

      • Gtellez says:

Try to go to the one next to the University of Manchester, everyday the queue goes out of the door, usually 50 people waiting for their free coffee at anytime of the day.

        • Chrisasaurus says:

Well, wait until you have an additional 20 seconds of messing around looking for the new app to register your purchase for every customer.

Can look forward to queues even worse – yay!

  • Andrew says:

We’ve got a worksite Pret here. It’s so handy, and incredibly busy.

  • Dominic says:

Smart addition to go alongside the coffee subscription.
