New Avios flight options as Iberia and Finnair add long-haul routes

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Both Iberia and Finnair have made new long-haul route announcements in the last 24 hours.

All of these flights will be bookable with Avios and should offer low levels of taxes and charges. Whilst you can’t use a British Airways American Express companion voucher when redeeming Avios on Finnair or Iberia, it offers good value for solo travellers or those who want to save a voucher for another trip.

The downside, of course, is the requirement to travel via Madrid or Helsinki.

New Iberia routes to United States

New Iberia long-haul routes to the US

Iberia is launching a new route from Madrid to Dallas in April.

There will be four weekly return flights. The rationale for the route is to feed into American Airlines which has a hub in Dallas.

Washington DC is (finally) launching too.

Iberia had this route lined up to launch in April 2020 but, you know …. There will be four flights per week.

US East Coast Avios redemptions are exceptional value with Iberia, with Madrid to Washington (plus New York, Boston etc) costing just 68,000 Avios return in Business Class off-peak. Taxes and charges are around £140. Peak dates require 100,000 Avios but this is still less than a British Airways service, to say nothing of the £400 taxes saving.

San Francisco is returning from April with three flights per week from Madrid.

Where is Iberia currently flying in North America?

If you are looking to travel before the end of March, Iberia is currently operating the following routes:

  • New York (10 flights per week)
  • Miami (10 flights per week)
  • Chicago (5 flights per week)
  • Boston (3 flights per week)
  • Los Angeles (3 flights per week)
  • San Juan, Puerto Rico (4 flights per week)

Our guide to spending Avios on Iberia is here.

Finnair business class with Avios

New Finnair long-haul routes to Asia

Finnair has its own new route plans for Summer 2022.

It is finally launching services to Busan in South Korea, a new route which was planned pre-covid and then put on hold.

It will also launch flights to Tokyo Haneda and Sapporo.

Finnair has a big presence in Japan – it is the biggest overseas market for the airline – and these two routes will take the number of airports served to six :

  • Tokyo Narita (daily)
  • Tokyo Haneda (daily)
  • Osaka (daily, 2x daily from June)
  • Nagoya (daily)
  • Fukuoka (3 per week)
  • Sapporo (2 per week)

Daily services to Hong Kong, Seoul, Singapore and Bangkok, and twice-weekly services to Shanghai, will also operate.

Finnair is picking up the slack after BA dropped Helsinki

With Helsinki now purged from the British Airways network, Finnair is stepping up capacity.

There will be four daily flights between Heathrow and Helsinki. For cargo reasons, one will use an A350 and another will use an A330, offering flat beds in business class. The other two flights will use standard short-haul aircraft and are best avoided!

Finnair has recently cut the taxes and charges on redemption flights sharply as we showed in this article. Book a redemption in Business Class from Helsinki to Seoul on Avios, for example, and you only pay £30 in taxes and charges! The Japan routes are not as cheap, unfortunately, as Finnair’s hands are tied by the terms of its joint venture agreement with JAL. The latest Finnair business class seat on the A350 is pictured above.

  • ChrisC says:

AY also launching HEL- DFW 4 times a week from 7th Feb 2022

  • david says:

Was quite surprised to see Ryanair now fly quite cheaply to HEL. A few years back it was impossible to get there with an LCC.

  • Anna says:

Do you have to book via the Iberia website to get the low taxes?

    • ChrisC says:

Yes and start the trip in Spain to save on the government proper taxes as well as the airline surcharges.

See the guide Rob has linked to.

      • Anna says:

Thanks yes I’m aware. As we have to travel from MAN, going via Madrid wouldn’t be much more inconvenience. Just a pain having to move avios to Iberia!

        • Red Flyer says:

You can also book via Avios website if you have an Aer Lingua or Vueling account too. I did a separate IB Express to/from MAD and then return flights to S America on there no issues S could not get BA Avios to move to IB Plus account.

    • Sam G says:

I recently booked out of Bogota and BA website was cheaper! So it’s worth double checking before you move (though by some miracle that has been seamless for me recently)

    • Rob says:

      Yes

  • Michael C says:

Looking at BKK-HEL for next summer: 6 economy seats available every day, no business on any day. Seem to remember something similar for LON-HEL a while back. Do they just release them on a different date if and when?

    • manilabay says:

AY generally release closer to the time, I think around 10 weeks to partners?

      • Michael C says:

        Cheers!

        • BJ says:

About right, would see a few appear about two months before departure. Couldn’t take advantage of them though as never seemed to be any connecting flights from Edinburgh, probably because many flights were operated by a smaller regional carrier (forgotten the name). Two stops from the regions via LHT is unattractive both in terms of convenience and avios.

  • Thywillbedone says:

Anyone have flight numbers for the HEL-LHR wide bodies? Tried a scattering of dates in January and they are all showing narrow bodies (albeit plenty of Avios availability in Y and J).

    • Metty says:

      outbound LHR-HEL from 28-Mar-22 until 29-Oct-22 AY1332 LHR d1020 A350, AY1338 LHR d1810 A333

      inbound LHR AY1331 HEL d0800 and AY1337 HEL d1600

  • Vickytm says:

Are redemption bookings on Iberia fully cancellable/ refundable like they are on BA? If so, Can it be done online or do you have to call?

    • Blindman says:

      Depends on the carrier.

IIRC it has to be Iberia or BA for them to be refundable.

    • Sam G says:

Have to call … quite a painful exercise!

IB bookings on other partners e.g. AA are non-refundable

    • Rob says:

Call, and you can’t get through so you lose the Avios and cash.

  • aDifferentSimon says:

Is the no ba to hel COVID driven or permanent?

    • Matthew says:

It got cancelled during COVID but I suspect they are happy for Finnair to operate it for the foreseeable future.

    • Rob says:

      Permanent

      • Chris says:

Is there anywhere to find out in a user friendly format the current routes that BA serve are planning to serve? With so many route cancellations over the last year or so it’s hard to get a clear picture. Appreciate it will change on an ongoing basis going forward. Cheers

      • ChampagneSocialist says:

Thanks, a positive change as far as I’m concerned – for a 3hr+/- flight I’d take AY J on A350 over BA A318/320 Club Europe anytime!!

      • aDifferentSimon says:

So hoping they’ll bring back the ivl Lapland flight is extreme wishful thinking. 🙁

  • Matthew says:

The HND and CTS routes are being restarted rather than ‘new’. I was booked on the HEL-CTS flight pre Covid on the old A330 which I think have all been retired now. Still hoping my ski trip to Japan in March 2022 will happen but probably not likely!
