News in brief:

Get yourself a Virgin Atlantic salt and pepper set!

One of the highlights of flying Virgin Atlantic Upper Class is getting your very own Wilbur and Orville salt and pepper set.

These are genuinely cult items. I remember taking a pair when I flew Virgin Atlantic Upper Class in the late 1990’s, and very few trends in the aviation industry survive that long. That said, the quality has dropped – my set is metal whilst they are now made out of plastic.

The reason I am mentioning this today is that Virgin Red is letting you buy a set of Wilbur and Orville salt and pepper shakers. They cost just 800 or 900 Virgin Points depending on whether you want black or silver.

This is surprisingly good value and it’s an ideal stocking filler for any aviation enthusiast, or yourself.

If you have not yet registered for Virgin Red, you can download the app here and link it to your Flying Club account. You will then be able to order your Wilbur and Orville set via the ‘Spend’ menu. You cannot order them from the Virgin Flying Club site.

Head for Points party at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix …..

Judging by emails I received yesterday, there is an unofficial weekend-long HfP party taking place at the W Abu Dhabi Yas Island hotel this weekend during the Grand Prix.

W Abu Dhabi Yas Island is the hotel which is built directly across the racetrack, see below. This makes it an astonishing place to stay during the Grand Prix weekend.

We have always mentioned Abu Dhabi grand prix redemptions on HfP when they became available. So far six rooms-worth of HfP readers, with a total of 11 people, have met up in the hotel.

I have some photos but I won’t run them as I don’t have the express permission of everyone. It’s possible that a few are claiming to be working from home …..! I hope you all have a great weekend.

The hotel website is here if you want to try your luck with a Marriott Bonvoy redemption for next year at some point.

PS. One of the readers sent this photo from the balcony of his suite:

We make plans that mostly don’t work out.. that said wet bar at 11pm tonight:-)

  • Bigmaggot says:

They did have gold salt and pepper for a 1000 last week too

    • Lady London says:

Grrrr….I’d be happy to spend some points on these (could move them from Tesco if I turn out to be short)… hope they offer them again.

Did you tea-leaf your metal ones Rob? I gather doing that was quite the fashion 🙂

      • DeB20 says:

        Lady London,

I would be happy to give you a set if you would like, but the two sets I have are both plastic. After flying Upper Class for more than 15 years, I only finally got around to taking two pairs, with the permission of the cabin crew, on my last round trip on Virgin Atlantic.

That is the trip that you gave me advice on here on HFP, regarding my EU261 claim for the cancelled return flights.

So I am happy to give you a set as a gesture of thanks. If you are interested, then perhaps Rob or Rhys can give my email address to you and then we can sort out the logistics.

        • Lady London says:

Thanks DeB20. Very glad EU261 is helping you.

Thanks also for the offer, if it’s plastic now I’m sure I will be able to nick my own, very kind of you but wouldn’t put you to the trouble 🙂

          • Deb20 says:

Virgin tried to short change me…but caved in when I quoted specific sentences from the regulations!

        • Danny says:

If you read the bottom of the shakers you’ll realise that you don’t have to ask the crew first 🙂

(though if you do they’ll empty them for you which can be very welcome!!)

  • Nick M says:

Have all of the salt/pepper shakers sold out? – I can’t find them by searching and when sorting by points needed jumps from Greggs items to donations (1000+)

  • Adexis says:

We’re hoping to travel to Ritz Carlton Abu Dhabi in a few weeks. It’ll be our first trip to Abu Dhabi so really looking forward to it.

Does anyone know what the mask policy is around the pool area there (eg do you need to wear masks lying on sun beds)?

  • BuildBackBetter says:

Feel sorry for those at Abu Dhabi for F1.
The only question is at what point does Max crash into HAM and take him out.

    • Rob says:

HarryT just sent me pics of his £3,500 per night suite upgrade …. no need to feel sorry for him 🙂

      • Will says:

I’ve been in one of those suites on GP day back when it was a ViceRoy and a prospective client was paying full price for it.

Blew my mind that Harry T got a SNA upgrade to that room on race weekend.

Surely a contender for best redemption ever!

    • Alex says:

      Most boring GP 💤

Good if you want to flash.

    • Graham Walsh says:

      First corner?

  • Richmond_Surrey says:

There used to be plenty of salt and pepper sets on Ebay. I got two, one for display cabinet, second is on the table and all my guests learned to use small planes.

  • Matthew says:

Is the yacht there at the Yas Marina? Prob the best ever Marriott redemption in my life that!! Think the Bonvoy GP packages went for crazy points this time but the Hilton ones were pretty cheap.

  • JohnT says:

If you get chance try the Brewery Tap near the Chester river walls in Lower Bridge Street. Apart from the real ales and wine, amazing home comfort food in a historic hall, of medieval origin rebuilt in the 17th century!
