Don’t forget the 4-day Jubilee Bank Holiday in June 2022

To celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022, the Government has undertaken a big shake-up of the late May Bank Holiday.

Whilst this is still 5 months away, it is worth thinking about it now because you may still be able to pick up a decent reward flight to escape it all!

For most people, you would get a 4-day short break without having to take any time off work.

What is happening for the June 2022 Jubilee Bank Holiday?

The Government is planning a 4-day “blockbuster weekend of celebrations” to celebrate The Queen’s 70 year reign.

If you’d rather poke yourself in the eye with a sharp stick, or simply don’t trust any event organised by the Govenment to be worth attending, it is a great opportunity for a short break abroad.

This is what is happening:

  • the second May Bank Holiday has been moved from a Monday to Thursday 2nd June
  • an additional Bank Holiday has been created on Friday 3rd June

This allows you to book a holiday from 2nd to 5th June without requiring any time off work, assuming you have a traditional Monday to Friday work pattern.

I want to flag one potential issue. Sunday 5th June, as well as being the last day of the Jubilee weekend, is also the last day of half term for many families. You will be competing with them for return flights. It may make more sense to take one day off work, have a five day holiday and return on Monday 6th June.

Where to book

SeatSpy has an interesting ‘Where Can I Go?’ feature available to paid subscribers.

You input the dates (exact dates or a range) when you want to depart and return and SeatSpy can tell you which British Airways or Virgin Atlantic routes have award availability in the travel classes you specify.

I looked for long haul British Airways routes with 2 x Business Class seats available, travelling out on Thursday 2nd June and returning on Sunday 5th June. Realistic options – given that it’s only four days – include Boston, Washington, Bahrain, Delhi and Mumbai.

If you are willing to return on Monday 6th June, lots more options open up including New York, Houston and Doha. If you felt you could handle the jet leg, Rio, Sao Paulo and Buenos Aires are also available.

There are obviously huge numbers of European routes with Avios seats.

Think twice before booking any non-refundable hotel rooms, however. Whilst we are only looking five months ahead, The Queen is 95 …..

What a discussion: from lilibeth to teology 🙂

      *Lilibet😎

    • Andrew J says:

Well if nothing else it’s got us talking again after the failure of the daily chat and the move to the clunky forum.

      • can says:

        true

      • The Savage Squirrel says:

50 separate topics discussed in the forum today; nearly all with several posts; and able to follow on from posts from previous days so that topics do not all die every night; far more posting traffic, variety and detail than the chat thread ever achieved. Why not give it another try?

        • Andrew J says:

So difficult to follow the thread with all the quoting back and the oldest comments at the top, plus the clunky way you have to respond to things makes it very unappealing.

      • yorkieflyer says:

agreed, but at least I will never have to read any more guff about Beardy/Bendy/Che…………..

  • Geoff 1977 says:

Demand for high horses must have rocketed today

  • Anuj says:

It’s a bit of a shock to me how the older generations (pages 1 and 2) still view the royal family. I think they’d be shocked how younger generations view the royal family. If you think the article is rude or disrespectful then I think you would faint if they saw the memes and jokes people my age have been making about the royals on social media.
I also think it’s bizarre people keep calling for respect. What’s wrong with discussing death that horrifies so many people? I don’t think we should become like N Korea and deify royalty and forbid any mention of their mortality.

    • Geoff 1977 says:

It’s not even about the royal family as such, more that some people get so offended by jokes which aren’t even really near the knuckle.

    • dougzz99 says:

It’s good you speak for your entire generation 👍

    • Mike says:

Anuj – it is not big, nor clever to boast about being disrespectful. As indicated in your post you are on the young side, I suspect you will grow out of your disrespectful manner as you mature into adulthood.

      • yorkieflyer says:

Well I’m on the old side and I’m mighty pleased the deferential attitude of my fellow subjects is going as we become citizens.

        • ChrisC says:

Just checked my passport. It says ‘British Citizen’

As does the previous one and the one before that and the first one I got in 1990.

      • alan says:

        +1

    • ChrisC says:

There is no issue with discussing death per se. Many societies are incredibly bad at discussing it and it is a topic that does need more discussion.

But the issue some of us have here is discussing the death of an individual person (who despite her position is still a mother, grand mother, great grandmother and aunt) and whether one bank holiday would be rescinded and another revert back to its usual date.

    • Tariq says:

I guess it reminds the coffin dodgers of their own mortality.

  • Anti Grammar nazi says:

Wonder if Andrew will be able to take a plane away for the 4 days?? Club together for a Y flight to Commonwealth?

…er 5 nights to get double tier points.

Give him a break, he’s had to miss Verbier this year!

Air Miles Randy will likely never be able to leave blighty again in fear of extradition

      • yorkieflyer says:

Perhaps a thought here for Rob for another Royal article? BA destinations without an extradition treaty with the US?

        • Anti Grammar nazi says:

Andy can give Roman Polanski a call for top tips. Maybe Moscow for the snow and Germany for the summer ?

        • NorthernLass says:

He could try Abu Dhabi; the former King of Spain turned up there a couple of years when he was being investigated for certain financial irregularities by the European authorities!

  • Adil says:

Article reminded me of a Frankie Boyle gag about the Queen.. “It’s the funeral today boys, black armbands on the flumes”

    • Andrew J says:

It’s certainly not been HFP’s finest hour.

      • Mike says:

Worst article and mainly the comments by Rob so far this year ! Utterly disrespectful to make light of the death of our Queen. 70 years of loyal service is to be respected whatever your personal position on the monarchy is.

        • Yorkieflyer says:

No, it wholly depends on your point of view, Queenie has done the job asked of her for sure, the article includes fair comment in tune with the times we live in rather than living in the past

        • Anti Grammar nazi says:

I wouldn’t check Twitter memes if I was you. People are pretty cutting.

I’m sure she doesn’t give a monkeys either way. Forcing someone to have a job due to birth should be against the law in human rights ground. Time for the echo of empire to finally end and the monarchy to leave the stage and have a fixed term president.

          • Nick says:

@Mike and what about those of us who refuse to deify an old woman who’s lived a life of bounty at our expense? Should we be shot at dawn? Gunned down by Russians like they’re doing in Kazakhstan right now? Isn’t it better to live in a country where we’re free to criticise our rulers?

  • Lula says:

The comments on this article are hilarious. Thanks all! Long live bank holidays, whatever their origin!

  • Richie says:

    Some other ‘Don’t forget’ notes for the Avios richer with school age children;

1 BA Gatwick Euroflyer flights to Gatwick for Sunday 29th October 22 and from Gatwick for Saturday 17th December are not yet available and may be worth watching.

2 BA flights to London LCY & LHR for 31 Dec 22 et seq should appear soonish. SH Euroflyer to LGW may be worth watching.

    • Richie says:

Also LH BA flights to LGW for 31Dec 22 et seq should appear soonish.

  • Stephan says:

Must say comments today in response to Rob are hilarious. It’s a travel blog not some Queen glorification site. Same ppl that get riled up when talking about sustainable traveling. Although pleased to finally see a fair amount snowflakes today after this miserable weather.
