Don’t forget the 4-day Jubilee Bank Holiday in June 2022

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

To celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022, the Government has undertaken a big shake-up of the late May Bank Holiday.

Whilst this is still 5 months away, it is worth thinking about it now because you may still be able to pick up a decent reward flight to escape it all!

For most people, you would get a 4-day short break without having to take any time off work.

British Airways A320

What is happening for the June 2022 Jubilee Bank Holiday?

The Government is planning a 4-day “blockbuster weekend of celebrations” to celebrate The Queen’s 70 year reign.

If you’d rather poke yourself in the eye with a sharp stick, or simply don’t trust any event organised by the Govenment to be worth attending, it is a great opportunity for a short break abroad.

This is what is happening:

  • the second May Bank Holiday has been moved from a Monday to Thursday 2nd June
  • an additional Bank Holiday has been created on Friday 3rd June

This allows you to book a holiday from 2nd to 5th June without requiring any time off work, assuming you have a traditional Monday to Friday work pattern.

I want to flag one potential issue. Sunday 5th June, as well as being the last day of the Jubilee weekend, is also the last day of half term for many families. You will be competing with them for return flights. It may make more sense to take one day off work, have a five day holiday and return on Monday 6th June.

Where to book

SeatSpy has an interesting ‘Where Can I Go?’ feature available to paid subscribers.

You input the dates (exact dates or a range) when you want to depart and return and SeatSpy can tell you which British Airways or Virgin Atlantic routes have award availability in the travel classes you specify.

I looked for long haul British Airways routes with 2 x Business Class seats available, travelling out on Thursday 2nd June and returning on Sunday 5th June. Realistic options – given that it’s only four days – include Boston, Washington, Bahrain, Delhi and Mumbai.

If you are willing to return on Monday 6th June, lots more options open up including New York, Houston and Doha. If you felt you could handle the jet leg, Rio, Sao Paulo and Buenos Aires are also available.

There are obviously huge numbers of European routes with Avios seats.

Think twice before booking any non-refundable hotel rooms, however. Whilst we are only looking five months ahead, The Queen is 95 …..

When this story was first run (18 May 2021) the last sentence gave some odds of The Queen dying by June 2022. Are you not going to treat us to recalculated odds for this second run of the story since they must surely be higher 8 months later?
Not only the headline in Daily Mail style but repeating stories like the Daily Mail.

    • Jonathan says:

You must believe anything that’ll be put in front of you to believe the sort of rubbish they’ll often write

      • Rob says:

Could only find the odds for dropping off in the next 12 months, not 5 months 🙂

        • Andrew J says:

          How tasteful.

          • Rob says:

You presumably have access to the same actuarial data yourself as a medic.

          • Mike says:

Rob – please show some respect that is the death of the Queen you are referring to as “dropping off” as the owner of a widely read / respected and popular travel website.

        • Matt says:

What a distasteful comment Rob. Why is HfP descending into awful culture war topics?

          • BuildBackBetter says:

They are remoaners and logically hate anything to do with English or British culture. Or be seen like that.

          • Rui N. says:

How on Earth would this be a culture war? Is there someone out there that think that the Queen will not die? At most it’s a distasteful joke about someone dying.

          • Geoff 1977 says:

You’ve really offended someone people today Bob 🤣

Didn’t realise people were so easily offended. I’d imagine there’s steam coming out of ears and keyboards being smashed as we speak 🤣

          • Geoff 1977 says:

“ They are remoaners and logically hate anything to do with English or British culture. Or be seen like that.”

I love Britain but I wasn’t offended by Rob’s joke because I’m not an easily offended little flower like some

  • Andrew J says:

Personally I will be staying in London to celebrate the remarkable dedication to public life that Her Majesty has made, and not using it as an opportunity to travel.

    • James says:

Good for you. I’ll be on a beach 🙂

      • alig4th says:

Not sure why you can’t do both. Raising a glass Her Majesty’s health from a beach overseas. I’m sure there are plenty of people who won’t be in London that will be doing so (Commonwealth…)

      • Jonathan says:

Assuming your destination / transit country doesn’t hit the red list right before travel !

      • Matt says:

Agreed Andrew J. I’m looking forward to organising a bit of a street party with my neighbours. A bit of a humbug article from HfP but each to their own!

    • Zippy says:

I’ve already passed on my apologies to HRH that I will be attending to the empire, she’s yet to reply.

    • Paul says:

      Delighted for you!

I will be doing anything else I can, including watching paint dry to avoid the flag sha£ing that this country has descended into in recent years

    • Geoff 1977 says:

She’ll also deserve the break herself given that she’ll be busy with the Prince Andrew stuff over the next few months! Sounds like it’s going to cost her a few quid too!

      • Harrier25 says:

Let’s get that right. It won’t cost the Queen anything, but will cost every UK taxpayer a few quid!

    • yorkieflyer says:

and as a republican I avoided both the Diana and Queen Mother funeral shenanigans. I do remember a very sympathetic American couple offering their condolences at my sad loss of the Ms Bowes Lyons when in the Caribbean and unsighted on our loss

    • Alex Sm says:

+1. Especially as this must really be the last of these celebrations. Something to remember properly rather than go on yet another break

  • Paul says:

Perhaps I am just old-fashioned but I find the tone used in parts of this piece to be in rather bad taste. I have no objection at all to promoting travel ideas for a one-off long weekend, nor am I a particularly ardent royalist and I do get that national parties are not everyone’s thing, but still, in my view some of the wording used is just off the mark and unworthy of the usual quality for this site. Maybe it is meant to be funny and it’s too early in my day for me to appreciate the humour.

    • Andrew J says:

And a really odd comment that one of the reasons people might want to book a holiday for this period was because they might not trust an event the government is organising. Not sure what there is to trust or not trust about the Jubilee events.

      • BJ says:

Millenium Dome to name but one…

        • ianM says:

It’s turned out okay hasn’t it?

Agree with comments about the tone of the article. It’s unnecessary.

        • Andrew J says:

The Millennium Dome??? Built almost a quarter of a century ago by a completely different government?!

          • BJ says:

Well, it was what popped into my head first! For a more contemporary project how about … Brexit 😀

          • Rob says:

Don’t forget we have the upcoming ‘Festival of Brexit’ to look forward to. Once you’ve visited that we can have another discussion about whether Government’s should run such events ….

£120m being spent on it, BTW.

          • ChrisC says:

Indeed. Initially promoted by one Michael Heseltine Deputy Prime Minister at the time.

BTW a huge chunk of the cost of the project was for clearing the site of various toxic waste dumps and putting in infrastructure like roads, water, gas and electricity.

The same (plus the proper disposal of a mountain of fridges) applied to the cost of building the Olympic venue.

          • Geoff 1977 says:

“ about whether Government’s should run such events”

Whether government’s plan what should run such events?

Sorry. A joke about a rogue apostrophe (Although based on the replies I’m not sure people can take a joke these days 🙂)

          • Geoff 1977 says:

Note to self. If posting about someone else’s grammar make sure your own sentence makes sense 🙂

        • Alex Sm says:

This type of “tunnel vision” comments reminds of these weird calls to strip Tony Blair of his knighthood because of Iraq… while completely ignoring / taking for granted all the great things his govt brought for the country

      • yorkieflyer says:

        Millenium fire works for another

      • Chris says:

I thought Rob’s comment about trust in the Government rather amusing given the way he and other COVID bedwetters on here have fallen over themselves to go along with just about every mad, disproportionate action the Government has taken during the past two years – actions which have wrecked their travel industry. Hilarious.

        • Rob says:

We’re not running political campaigns on here, we simply tell you the facts.

(Actually a senior airline person told me at World Travel Market in November that what she liked about HfP is that all our covid stuff has been based in fact and that we don’t write about rumoured changes.)

    • Matt says:

Your views are not old fashioned Paul. I think HfP has played this wrong completely wrong.

      • Lady London says:

        +1

        • Jos says:

          ± 1- long live the queen .
          Looking forward to the celebrations

        • Mike says:

+1 A stand up fail for Rob

          • The Hunter says:

            Agreed

          • Nick says:

Couldn’t disagree more, Rob has got this absolutely spot on. For a country that lectures the world on democracy it’s a total embarrassment that our head of state is in role solely by an accident of birth, and the new brexiteer mantra of ‘must salute flag’ is tiring. I’ll be happy to be anywhere but here that weekend… and as I’d totally forgotten about the changed bank holidays I’m grateful to Rob for reminding me to get around to booking something.

  • Mike says:

    Platinum Jubilee Medal anyone?

  • Graham C says:

Some really strange comments on here this morning. Good for you if you’re throwing parties with your neighbours. Not everyone has that same kind of relationship.

This site is focused on travel and we all like to maximise our opportunities so thanks for the article.

Those saying this is in bad taste and the like may need a cup of tea before commenting. There’s certainly no harm intended here.

    • ChrisC says:

The bad taste comes from the last line nit that people might want to go away that weekend.

      • Rob says:

But it is a reasonable point – the holiday will be cancelled if she passes and the Bank Holiday would likely move back to the Monday.

        • Geoff 1977 says:

Will it definitely be cancelled? Source?

          • Rob says:

Obviously depends when the event takes place. If she died today, you would bet on cancellation. If she dies in May, probably not.

          • Geoff 1977 says:

Ok. So it’s a wild guess. Fair enough

          • Ian says:

The Queen acceded to the throne on 6th February 1952, so the 6th February 2022 marks her 70th anniversary. That’s only 30 days from now, so no celebration events later in the year are going to be cancelled, whatever happens….it’s a celebration of her reign, after all.

        • ChrisC says:

It might be a reasonable point but it’s still in bad taste.

If they cancelled you’ll have the tourism industry scream blue murder for starters.

And then all those people who booked time off work and trips away based on the moved and extra Bank Holiday are going to love having to possibly cancel those trips

They’ll just change it to weekend of commeration rather than celebration.

          • Geoff 1977 says:

I can’t see it being cancelled for the reasons you’ve outlined. We’d probably just get an additional bank holiday for the funeral etc

          • Harrier25 says:

….or a weekend to celebrate the crowning of Charlie boy.

          • Rui N. says:

Also doubt that they would cancel it. My company, and I’m sure many others, did all the planning for this calendar year based on the existence of these two bank holidays on these specific dates. It’s one thing to change things, and impose extra costs on businesses, because of a ever-changing pandemic situation. To change these bank holidays at this point might be too much even for this government.

          • Rob says:

But the Government has already imposed extra costs on you by announcing this in the first place?!

          • Rui N. says:

Yes, they have imposed extra costs. Which is the reason why would now be outrageous to cancel the revised bank holiday schedule.

        • Paul says:

I’d bet good money on that not happening.

It would be used as a memorial weekend as everyone and every business has already planned for the 4 days of faux patriotism.

For the record, as a rampant republican I wish HM no harm, but neither do I wish this anachronistic dynasty to continue one second longer after she departs the stage.

          • yorkieflyer says:

Well said, she’s of a different era and done her best but afterwards the show should be pulled

        • Alex Sm says:

It won’t be cancelled but it will turn into a celebration of her reign

    • Geoff 1977 says:

“ Those saying this is in bad taste and the like may need a cup of tea before commenting”

      Agreed. ❄️

    • Matt says:

You’re coming across as a horrible man Rob. Have some common decency and stop talking about our queen’s death.

      • Rui N. says:

You might even found out someday that obituaries are mostly written while people are still alive. So horrible of people to do that!

      • Rhys says:

We have a very funny relationship with death in this country, don’t we?

Although I was somewhat taken aback by my 90 year old Granny saying she was ready to die now that she had seen the family for her birthday and Christmas. But on the whole I do think we ought to be more open as a society about death and dying. I don’t think fear is an appropriate response to something we eventually all succumb to…

        • BuildBackBetter says:

It’s not fear. It’s about respect. And decency. Doesn’t matter if she’s queen.

          • Rob says:

I can’t speak for The Queen, but if the recent funeral of my 95 year old Aunt had crossed with a holiday I had booked, I know she would have been exceptionally angry if I’d cancelled it to attend ….

          • Rui N. says:

You mean the decency and respect of calling people that were against Brexit “remoaners” and saying that they hate English* and British culture? That sort of decency and respect?
(*But apparently hating Welsh, Scottish, Irish, Cornish, etc. culture should be fine, I guess.)

      • Geoff 1977 says:

I think you’re going a bit far Matt. It was only a joke.

I’m not sure Rob is a particularly pleasant person but I don’t think this story/post proves it

        • Rob says:

Ask anyone who deals with us and I’d hope you’d be told that my team and I are the nicest people you would ever have the pleasure of working with. No-one has ever left HfP to work for someone else.

        • Harrier25 says:

There’s nothing wrong with the Cornish, Rui N. 😂

      • The Savage Squirrel says:

“You’re coming across as a horrible man Rob. Have some common decency and stop talking about our queen’s death.”

Matt, the Queen will die within a relatively few years. So will everyone else aged 95 or over; (some of my relatives included). It is not disrespectful to say so. In fact it would be disrespectful to every one of them to ignore or silence this fact, when we should acknowledge, plan and prepare for it.
        Your comment is very strange.

  • Gibbsy says:

OMG the sentiments here. The old dear and her crooked family deserve sending to jail. We’ll not all of them. But most of them.

I’m booked to get out of the jingoistic hellscape the whole week before and week after. To one of her ex colonies 🤣 On points. Thanks rob and team 😁

    • BJ says:

Not a Royalist myself but given the alternative is the likes of a President Boris or a President Tony … long live HM!

      • ianM says:

Indeed, she’s seen off an incredible 14 Prime Ministers, hopefully soon to be 15 !

      • John says:

Why wouldn’t the president be a largely ceremonial figurehead like in Ireland and Germany?

        • yorkieflyer says:

Exactly this in a parliamentary democracy the president is usually an old war horse politician with no power, funnily enough the same as the Queens representative as Governor general in such as Australia.
why not 2 jags, no need for us to pay for a limo and he’d be fine to pick up the mantle for insulting foreigners that Philip put down

  • Alan says:

Enjoy – no sign of an extra PH here so I’ll be at work!

  • Richie says:

BTW Wizzair have a cheap flight at 22:15 from LGW-CHQ Chania on Wednesday 2nd June for the avios poor.

    • BJ says:

LCC have never been a major focus of HfP. However, now with the forum perhaps there is a place to allocate them a topic all of their own, subdivided as each major UK LLC and a further one for random others like AirAsia, IndiGo etc? If it became well established it could otentially mean a whole lot more page views and advertising for HfP with little staff effort unless I’m missing something obvious.

      • ChrisC says:

Yet here is a proper article from Wednesday about them and apparently Rhys was sent off to do a review.

        https://www.headforpoints.com/2022/01/05/wizz-air-announces-14-new-london-gatwick-routes/

The fact is many readers here do use LCCs and Rob is missing a trick if he dosen’t address their needs

        • BJ says:

Yes, I was pleased to see that article. LCC especially important to us outside London area for shorthaul. I don’t think it was a question of Rob missing a trick, just one of balancing resources and priorities but I figured the forum might now provude a new opportunity.

        • Andrew says:

The LCCs, like Jet Blue, need to get their finger out and offer HfP a return trip to the states. Out in Economy and back in Mint so we can get a good comparison of their product against BA and Virgin’s offerings. I suspect it’s considerably better.

Probably this summer, once services start running, would also be good to see the reviews of travelling transatlantic on United, Air Canada, Delta and American Products from the regions.

I suspect there’s a lot of people queuing in the tunnels at Heathrow who have no idea that you can be sitting on the tram outside EDI less than 15 minutes after your flight from New York doors open.

          • dougzz99 says:

Not something to argue about, but is JetBlue a LCC? Just more of a non-legacy airline whatever we might call those.

          • Peggerz says:

I agree with much of what you are saying Andrew, but the EDI baggage handlers would have you playing statues in the retrieval area for an hour or so too.

      • Richie says:

BTW HfP has Rhys’ Wizzair trip report coming soon, which will be an interesting read for me.

        • BJ says:

Looking forward to it too. I was pleasantly surprised with my first ever Easyjet trips, let down only by boarding process.

      • yorkieflyer says:

Yes, it would be nice for somewhere for Northerners to call home.
