GAME OVER: You can no longer extend 2-4-1 vouchers by claiming a Future Travel Voucher

In October 2021, British Airways started expiring American Express 2-4-1 companion vouchers again, after a number of pandemic extensions.

Luckily for Head for Points readers, we found a way to stop them expiring. You could book a random short haul flight using your voucher and immediately cancel it for a Future Travel Voucher.

This had the effect of ‘freezing’ your 2-4-1 voucher, allowing you to rebook for your choice of route at any point to 30th September 2023.

No more.

You can no longer get a Future Travel Voucher for an Avios booking

British Airways has, with no notice, made two changes to Future Travel Vouchers.

The key one is that you can no longer get a Future Travel Voucher on an Avios booking. Your booking will be automatically refunded instead.

If you have a 2-4-1 coming up to expiry, use it or lose it

This change of policy means that there is now no way of protecting a companion voucher which is approaching expiry.

You need to start looking for somewhere to fly to, or accept that it is going to be lost.

On the upside, online Avios cancellations are now possible

There is some upside here, of course.

For the first time in almost two years, you can now cancel an Avios booking online without having to speak to the BA call centre.

This only applies to travel up to 30th September 2023, however.

‘Book With Confidence’ is extended to 30th September 2023

There is some other good news.

British Airways has extended its ‘Book With Confidence’ deadline to 30th September 2022.

The previous deadline was 31st August 2022. If you book any British Airways travel for completion by 30th September 2022, you can cancel it at any point for a Future Travel Voucher.

The voucher will act as credit against a new booking which must be made for travel by 30th September 2023. Your Future Travel Voucher will be sent as an eVoucher, as there won’t be any Avios element, meaning that you can use it online at ba.com without having to call.

Summary

To summarise these changes:

  • If you have a 2-4-1 companion voucher coming up for expiry, it now appears to be too late to artificially extend it by turning it into a Future Travel Voucher. This game is over.
  • There is good news for everyone else – you can now cancel Avios redemption bookings online again, at least for travel before 30th September 2023, and the ‘Book With Confidence’ guarantee has been pushed out to 30th September, allowing you to book cash tickets for travel in September with no worries.

  • Rma says:

Looking at the statement below taken from BA FAQS, does this mean you can’t top up the Avios in the FTV so you can use it for a longer flight?

‘Can you combine your voucher with Avios towards a new flight, hotel, car or holiday booking?’

‘No. Vouchers cannot be combined with Avios, they can only be used either to redeem against fully paid flight bookings or towards a deposit/full payment of a holiday package.’

    • Rob says:

No, it means a cash voucher can only be used for a cash booking.

  • Gordon says:

Luckily i received a FTV for a 2-4-1 voucher a few weeks ago after a cancellation. But this aside I think people should be happy that we are hopefully coming out of the pandemic. And not unhappy that the generous BA voucher extension scheme is coming to an end.Being able to book a flight or a holiday without the worry of constant disruption which is out of your control is a number one priority for me and I guess for so many other hfp readers also. Here’s looking forward to the good old days back again….

  • Tracey says:

I have a booking for September 2022. When I made it I was reminded that it falls outside the BWC due to the date being beyond end August. Now that BWC has been extended, does it now fall within the coverage? Or is it new bookings only?

  • Cg says:

So I cancelled a 2-4-1 booking to Manchester (made to extend the 2-4-1) last Friday and have received two future travel voucher codes. There is no mention of the 2-4-1 on the FTV email just says I can use the codes till sept 2023. 2-4-1 is not back in my account. Does this mean I was successful in extending the 2-4-1 or am I likely to see it back in my account soon? Thanks

  • Michael C says:

I have a US holiday booked for April (cash+Avios upgrade). In the worst-case scenario that one of us tests positive the day before (in the US 24-hr pre-departure test), i.e. about 12 hours before departure, my only option would be to immediately turn the whole thing into an FTV, right?

  • BuildBackBetter says:

You forgot to mention the main upside – more vouchers expiring means more redemption seats available for rest of us.

  • Vit says:

Morning Rob et al, was scouring through the comments but did not seem to find the answer.

I have flight booked using FTV to BKK outbound mid Dec but have not picked my return leg as it was not available when booking was made. Can I add the return leg or will this be regarded as change and need to be “cancelled and rebook”? hence losing my 2-4-1 voucher.

    Cheers,
    Vit

    • Rob says:

Gut feeling is that you’re fine, since the original booking isn’t changing (you keep the same booking reference).

      • Vit says:

Thanks Rob. Fingers crossed. Will do it and report back here if I can ever get through to BA CS!

  • Terwri says:

I have a 2 4 1 booking in April 2022 on a voucher that expires in March 2022. We received vouchers for a BA cancelled 241 flight during the height of the pandemic. Those vouchers were given an expiry date of September 2023. Do these now expire in Sept 2023 or as of March 2022 if we cancel – as we need to do.

    • Rob says:

If you cancel your rebooked flight, you’ll get the individual bits back – no new voucher.

For the FTV you already have unused, this can still be rebooked for travel up to 9/23.
