British Airways drops Bangkok and other Asia routes for the winter

British Airways has, it seems, lost confidence in the Asian market and its ability to open up post pandemic.

A range of service cuts have been made this week.

Most importantly for the leisure market, Bangkok has been dropped for the entire Winter season, from late October to late March. If you are holding a ticket to Bangkok for late October onwards, BA will be in touch to discuss rebooking, most likely on Qatar Airways.

British Airways drops Bangkok

Other changes:

  • Beijing Daxing – service withdrawn for the Winter season
  • Hong Kong – one of the two daily flights has been withdrawn for the Winter season
  • Shanghai – service withdrawn for the Winter season
  • Tokyo Haneda – one of the two daily flights has been withdrawn for the Winter season

It is obviously possible that flights could be reinstated if demand picks up, but with British Airways still short of long haul aircraft following the Boeing 747 retirement – a situation which will take longer to fix than hiring new cabin crew – I wouldn’t expect much.

Bangkok in particular is regarded as a low yielding route, with relatively little business traffic, meaning that aircraft can be more profitably used elsewhere.

The double avios offer page was published in October 2021…

  • Gill says:

still waiting for KUL to relaunch!

  • Dave says:

Ah scuppered by this. Booked a one way to BKK using companion voucher for December 2022, intended to book return for May 2023 back to LHR but if they’re cancelling the route/rerouting me I guess I won’t be able to do that

    • YB says:

Same position here. We booked the outbound to BKK for March 2023. Return not yet available.

  • Numpty says:

As a follow up to my previous comments, if you do get rebooked on QR etc it’s worth one last confirmation call to BA before your flight. At QR check in today they said they couldn’t check us in as BA hadn’t amended the ticket correctly (e ticket I had looked correct) and to go away and sort it myself with BA as they couldn’t do it. Thankfully we turned up 3 hrs early (just in case) and after 40 mins (and one BA operator seemingly hanging up) tickets sorted. No ticket agent/desk at EDI.

Swissport handle QR at Edi, incredibly bad service which started with them telling me I needed a visa for KUL.

QR business class was night and day compared to BA, although for sleeping I don’t like the 787 seat.

Thanks for sharing your experience. We are booked using 2-4-1 out of INV in Dec. Still a bit to go but just saw that the booking is no longer shown in my BAEC. Defo opt for either QR or AY out of EDI when we are asked for rebooking.

Thanks for the heads up to Rob and team. I have reviewed the form as best I can but wanted any advice.

My wife and I have a booking for Mar-23, WTP out and CW back (no CW out when we booked). Should I expect to get downgraded to Economy out or can I pay difference in BA Miles to upgrade to business?

    All help appreciated.

  • troubleonline says:

I had been looking at March 2023 prices for BA WTP/ PE to BKK for last few weeks and then the flights disappeared from the app on Thursday/Friday last week. Gutted as times and price from EDI via LHR were ideal. We did the same trip in 2020 just before lockdown and although old planes we had a really comfortable journey with decent service. Really feel for those who had booked already especially with companion tickets etc.
Seems on this thread there is in fact a fair bit of demand for BKK (though I appreciate not enough to fill every flight) so fingers crossed that nearer the time things change. We usually don’t book til about 6 months out. Even if BA could find their way to putting on BKK flights a couple of times a week as I would have been willing to time holiday around flights that were not daily as long as could get 2.5/3 weeks. I would have thought also some demand for a LHR to Phuket (HKT) since in the winter most are heading to the south for beach holidays!

Even though many ME carriers go to Phuket I’ve no desire to fly Qatar or other similar carriers as no PE and hate transferring mid route (done it a couple times and it was fairly rough with delays etc). Generally prefer to fly a longer leg from UK/Europe. Looks like we will be booking with KLM or AF instead but am concerned about comfort on the AF PE seats.

  • MKB says:

I have November LHR-BKK flights, but, oddly, I can still do seat assignments in Manage My Booking. I was expecting the cancellations to have manifested themselves in some way by now.

Ordinarily, given that flight schedules/timings for the winter season with most carriers are likely to change before November, I would hold off getting this re-booked until a lot later. However, given the re-route given by BA without a battle is likely to be with Qatar, and the forthcoming World Cup, I want to get this sorted asap.

    • PL says:

I think BA will stagger the cancellation notifications to avoid everyone calling up at the same time. At least that is what they did when they cancelled LHR-BKK in Jan.

  • Liviu says:

Hi, we have London bangkok booked in January -23 with companion voucher in business. Do I need to call BA to rebook this with QA and will I be asked to pay any difference in cost/or will QA recognise the seat booked with companion?

    • Rob says:

No extra to pay. Best to speak to BA now before they email everyone and the few seats BA can access go.
