Why are BA tier points not being given on fully flexible American Airlines tickets?

Two readers have been in touch this week to point out something strange with the American Airlines earning table when you credit your flights to British Airways Executive Club.

Here is an example taken from ba.com from the London to New York route, although the same applies to other routes too:

American Airlines tier points on British Airways

As you can, the screenshot shows zero tier points earned if you have a fully flexible Business Class or First Class ticket.

When I was first shown this, I assumed it was an error. (Yes, I know, we all thought BA’s IT was infallible.)

However, the second reader had actually taken a flight in fully flexible Business Class, and sent me a screenshot from his BAEC account:

In this case, he had flown on Finnair but it was booked under the American Airlines flight code.

As you can clearly see, he was in ‘D’ class (fully flexible Business Class) which earned Avios but no tier points.

This is totally bizarre and makes no sense. I am still convinced that it is a BA IT error, but potentially a deeper problem than just a display error in the BA tier point calculator.

This issue will hopefully get fixed and reverse itself automatically, but for now you should keen an eye on your BA account if flying on fully flexible American Airlines tickets.

I discovered the same problem when I flew LHR-LAX-JFK-LAX-LHR. No tier points for the entire ticket even LHRLAX round trip was on BA.

I booked it using Airpass Prepaid and assumed this was an airpass qurik at the time

  • Paul says:

    LOL, BA IT

Is there any part of BA that is operating correctly! I also note that the CEO has disappeared up his own rhetoric

  • Michele says:

It’s an issue BA are aware of but it may take some time to fix. You can claim the tier points through the usual process.

    • Alan T says:

      Hi Michele.

Does that usually involve begging a favour from a FT contact after both a claim and complaint fail to rectify it? 😉

They did given me 5000 Avios but no TPs after the complaint!?

  • Mark says:

Anyone else unable to see their recent ‘avios / TP transactions’ in the app? Mine has been that way for weeks now. Website will show the last 4 or 5 but if I click to see the full history it just bombs out to BA’s “ooops” page…

  • PeterW says:

I have the same issue with a BA flight from Dublin to London booked through AA, it’s part of a longer trip but the ticket class is J for that leg, so currently stating no tier points!

  • Ian says:

Any idea how long Qatar flights take to post? Need just one of them to take me to gold before Tuesday!

    • Dubious says:

Whenever I’ve needed them to credit quickly they have in inevitably taken around a week…on other occasions 3-5 days.

Don’t forget that they will still be dated as the date of the flight not the date they show on the account.

    • The Jetset Boyz says:

      They post every Tuesday.

After your flights post it’ll take a few days before your status changes to gold.

  • The Savage Squirrel says:

With the number of tier points I keep getting where I shouldn’t have, I hope BA never sort out their wheel-of-tier-point-fortune style IT 😉

  • barnaby100 says:

I am apparently flying from LHR- NCL in 1st!

I am looking forward to it (books on BA not AA as part of a multi-leg trip)
