News in brief:

Interesting Johannesburg deal in the Etihad sale

Etihad has launched a new long-haul sale from Manchester, with headline prices from £1,999 in Business Class.

Most places with fares this low are in the Middle East, India and Pakistan. There is one stand-out destination though – Johannesburg.

The sale is good for travel until the end of November so you are heading into the South African Summer at that point. I struggled to find this fare from Heathrow but from Manchester it was fairly easy, for example:

If you don’t live near Manchester, there are also good deals to Johannesburg from other European starting points – try out a few that are convenient to you and see what pops up. The Etihad sale page is claiming that Amsterdam to Jo’burg is as low as €1,450 for example.

The sale page of the Etihad website is here. Our last review of Etihad business class is here – this is the A380, which remains grounded, but a similar seat is used across the rest of the fleet.

Iberia domestic and transatlantic flights now bookable on ba.com

This may not be a new thing, but a reader pointed out that ba.com now lets you book the majority of Iberia flights, even when they are not British Airways codeshares. This has not historically been possible.

Here’s an example from Madrid to Santander:

It isn’t fully clear to me what the practical implications of this are.

If the BA call centre can solve issues with Iberia bookings then that would be a positive reason to book via ba.com and not iberia.com. It isn’t known if tickets would be issued with a 125- ticket number, meaning that they are effectively BA tickets and subject to BA control.

So, unless you need to book to get to places such as ALC from MAN, via LHR and not LGW, it probably isn’t obvious about the practicality of this. Previously you couldn’t book your outward sector using Iberia and especially Air Nostrum. Although bizarrely the return sector always did show these options.

    • Lady London says:

The airline whose flight number is the first outward flight on the ticket “owns” the ticket gets to keep most of the revenue from the ticket and gets to ‘write’ the ticket on their own paper i.e.the ticket number will begin with 125 if it’s BA.

No airline will give that away lightly and there used to be lots of incentives to travel agents from British Airways, that required the first outward flight on a ticket to be a BA flight or at least a BA-coded one.

  • Marko says:

I booked a BCN-MAD ticket with IB through BA and the ticket number starts with 125.

I can manage the booking via BA mostly, so far I just had to go to Iberia to select my seat.

It was a good way to spend part of the BA vouchers that I am still being forced to hold after more than 2 years.

The Etihad flight from MAN to JNB is a good quality flight BUT just takes too long, I typically Use Qatar or BA if duration is more important. With BA currently pricing around 5-6K they’re out of the game for me, QR is around 2.5-3K and presents the best option for me, EK is OK but typically a longer trip, the other option is Turkish – for whatever reason I tend not to use them.

  • Nick says:

ba.com doesn’t issue anything other than 125 tickets. The call centre can in some circumstances, but not online.

    • JAXBA says:

That’s interesting. What other airlines can BA call centres validate tickets on without using 125? Is it not limited revalidation of existing OAL tkts?

  • DZOO says:

Presumably in basic terms it also means added flex for duration of BwC / a couple of months over the summer vs booking direct on IB – no bad thing

  • Save East Coast Rewards says:

“ It isn’t known if tickets would be issued with a 125- ticket number, meaning that they are effectively BA tickets and subject to BA control.”

It’s been answered already (it does issue as 125 stock) but for the sake of €58 (cheapest fare in your screenshot) why not just check? You could then have requested an eVoucher – I think these are available too on these bookings.

One thing I still can’t book is BLQ-MAD on BA.com it always tries to route me via Heathrow. Hopefully that will appear soon as I always have to call to book BLQ-MAD-LHR if the direct flights are cancelled that day

Sad state of affairs that £2k to Joburg via ME is a deal (i’m not saying it isn’t, just that it seems a lot!). Back in 2019 we got Club world ex AMS via LHR to Cape town and 3 nights at the Hilton for ~£1300.

  • Lady London says:

That awning at the entrance to the Fairmont Windsor Park is not in keeping with the design of the hotel. It cheapens it. The least they could have done even if it’s just a temporary eyesore, is paint it white….
