How to create an Amex Platinum Covid insurance certificate before you travel

Some countries are still insisting that you provide evidence of travel insurance for coronavirus before you will be allowed to enter the country. If travelling to such a country, it may also be required by your airline at check-in as they will face the cost of repatriating you to the UK.

We had this issue when we travelled to Mauritius last month. The British Airways check-in staff at Gatwick South were on the ball and insisted that we show them proof of insurance before they would accept our baggage. (Anyone on hand baggage only would need to upload proof of insurance to VeriFLY before they would be allowed to do online check-in.)

American Express Amex Platinum card

If you bought a dedicated travel insurance policy then you don’t need to worry because you will have a personalised policy document. It is trickier if your coverage comes via The Platinum Card from American Express because you do not have a policy document with your name on it.

It turns out that American Express has the ability online to generate an insurance certificate.

How do you get an American Express travel insurance certificate?

The first step is to visit the dedicated American Express travel insurance portal which is here.

Once logged in, you will see this screen:

Click on ‘Get an insurance certificate’.

This takes you an AXA website where you need to fill in details about yourself, your card and your trip. Once you have submitted those, you are emailed the certificate immediately.

If you want to generate a second certificate in the name of your partner or anyone else covered by your policy, there is a link you can click to be taken back to the form.

The certificate comes as a PDF. You should assume that you will need to present a paper copy at the airport and immigration, not a screenshot. Make sure that you leave enough time in your planning to get it printed.

And that’s it. Once you know about the link above, it is a very fast and efficient process for American Express Platinum cardholders.

    Very helpful. Thank you!

  • Alan says:

Good they’ve automated this now, but they did at least offer it upon request previously. I used it about 6 years ago to fulfil the Aussie visa requirements for insurance cover for the first month (then switched to Medicare once there).

  • WaynedP says:

    Thanks, Rob

This is handy to know for cruises that also still insist on having this proof of insurance before allowing embarkation.

No sign of a rush to relax this requirement, so I expect to have to need it again for our next cruise later this year.

  • Ben says:

Thanks for HSBC link. Just checked and proof of insurance still needed for Israel.

  • Man of Kent says:

Thanks for this, very timely as I had printed a certificate last week but overlooked the fact I need to include The Leader of The Opposition too so have now generated another certificate in her name.

The only thing to look out for is that the list of countries in the drop down is not in strict alphabetical order – it seems to be 3/4 alphabetical lists one after another.

  • Chas says:

Thanks – really useful. I’ve printed off certificates for my teens who are heading off on different expeditions this summer. I don’t think they’ll need them for entry, but having a bit of paper can’t help. Although I’m sure they’ll both think that Dad’s contingency planning is going a step too far. Again! Interestingly (or not….) they don’t have Eswatini as a destination – it’s still listed as Swaziland despite changing its name 4 years ago.

I’m now even more confused! My wife and I both have an Amex Platinum. We’re going to Las Vegas in a few weeks, and have booked and paid for everything on my BAPP. Are we covered by our Amex Platinum Travel Insurance if any of us get sick/have an accident/require medical attention whilst in Vegas or en route there and back?

  • MSCHANEL says:

I really love all the articles in this community and the comments section EVEN MORE. I always get additional practical info and have utilised so many of the suggestions/experiences posted here. Just downloaded Insurance certificates for husband and I, would have had no incline how to do this previously. Thank you Rob and Head for points team you guys are awesome!
