Two interesting Black Friday gift card offers

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

I said we’d do an extra Black Friday article if anything interesting cropped up and (thanks to readers for the info) there are two interesting gift card deals worth flagging.

The first is actually nothing to do with travel, but is Amex related.

Get £240 of D&D Restaurants gift cards for £150

You may remember, a few weeks ago, that we covered an Amex cashback deal for D&D Restaurants, the ex-Conran Restaurants group.

Don’t think that D&D is just aimed at those living in London. It also has restaurants in Leeds, Manchester, Bristol and Birmingham.

The American Express offer means that, if targetted, you get £50 cashback with a £200 purchase on the D&D Restaurants Gift Shopclick here. Restaurant gift vouchers, valid at any UK D&D venue except The Modern Pantry, are available there.

As usual, you need to check the ‘Offers’ section on the statement page online or in the app for each American Express card you hold to see if it is there. If so, click ‘Save to Card’ before making your purchase.

Add 20% to your gift card for Black Friday

As a Black Friday offer, D&D is selling £120 gift cards for £100. This offer runs until 28th November.

This means that two of these will cost you £200 and will come loaded with a total of £240. Factor in the Amex cashback and you will pay just £150 for it.

Many D&D Restaurants are bookable via the Square Meal website, which allows you to double up by earning a slug of Virgin Points at the same time. I explain how this works here – I earned 6,337 Virgin Points when we last had lunch at Coq d’Argent, which is on the roof of the Head for Points office building, although that promotion is no longer available.

The Amex cashback deal is valid until 30th November. The restaurant gift vouchers are valid for one year after purchase.

Accor gift card Black Friday offer

Get a 20% bonus when you buy UK Accor giftcards

The Accor hotel group is running a similar deal, offering a 20% bonus when you buy gift cards.

The gift card site is here.

This is NOT a slam dunk because of the small print:

  • the gift cards can only be used in the UK
  • not all hotels participate – see the online list – although to be fair the vast majority are there
  • gift cards expire after 12 months
  • gift cards can only be used in conjunction with a hotel stay – you can’t redeem them for meals or spa treatments as a non-resident
  • you cannot use gift cards with pre-paid rooms, so you will be booking a more expensive refundable ‘pay on departure’ rate

On the upside:

  • Sofitel Heathrow and Sofitel Gatwick are included
  • using a gift card does not impact the Accor Live Limitless points you earn from your stay, albeit that you don’t earn any points for the card purchase

There is a similar offer for Germany – link in the comments below – and potentially for other countries too if you do a search.

  • Guernsey Globetrotter says:

The article appears truncated in error (final sentence ends ‘albeit that’ …)

  • Tarmohamed says:

Can we open a virtual room “folio” and have the restaurant and spa charge it to the virtual room and then pay at the front desk? Like some people did for the Marriot spend £400 get £400 back offer

    • Rob says:

If the hotel will do it, yes, it would probably work – but a really big risk here.

Interestingly, we had our SME private dinner at the EDITION a few weeks ago and the final bill came as a room bill, so it seems to be something they do generally for events and don’t struggle with.

      • R says:

That’s likely because they booked it as an event in their events software and that normally posts into the PMS as a folio.

  • Steve says:

Does the triple reward points stack with the gift card bonus?

  • Ian M says:

I’d be very interested if there’s an offer for Poland in Zloty!

  • RussellH says:

I tried replacing de with fr in the above URL and got the following message:- Gift cards
Under construction Please visit UK or DE shop in the meantime.

So probably only here and Germany at present. Trying es instead of de did not take me to the message – it failed completely, so I would guess that other country sites will be forthcoming, with (probably) France next, which is hardly surprising.

  • Tony1 says:

Accor had this last year, but I think was 25% off. Got £300 voucher. Found it very difficult to spend. Two hotels did not know how to apply on checkout !

Make sure hotel is in scheme, and that they know they are, and can apply the card. YMMV

    • Guernsey Globetrotter says:

Yes, I’ll repeat what I said in another thread about this offer: great way to reduce the cost of an overnight at either LHR or LGW Sofitel before a trip BUT if you need to check out quickly for a flight in the morning then pay for the room on check in the night before – it can take an age for receptionists to figure out how to apply these … please save yourselves the stress I have gone through (twice)!

  • meta says:

    Just received.

  • Paul B says:

Can anyone recommend a D&D restaurant in London, Coq d’Argent which I already know aside? Sounds like a good deal stacking with the Amex offer, and I assume no restrictions on the GV’s other than the expiration date?

    • Rob says:

We were at German Gymnasium last week – not bad, cavernous space, German slanted food. Next to Kings Cross.

The Shad Thames ones (Pont de la Tour etc) are a better date experience. Orrery used to have a very good reputation up in Marylebone.

    • tony says:

They have a few places on New Street nr Liverpool St. Had a bad meal last Christmas in the New Street Grill but a far better one last month. Just watch for the mark ups on the wine which are rapidly moving into full blown piss-take territory IMO (as if Coq wasn’t there already…)

    • aseftel says:

Launceston Place has the best food in my opinion. I have a soft spot for Orrery too. German Gymnasium is, like Rob says, fine. I’d pay to eat there but I wouldn’t be excited about it.

      • RussellH says:

Just looked at some of the German Gymnasium menus.

I realise that it is London, and that London Restaurants are now totally over the top pricewise, but still. It is Kings Cross, not Fitzrovia or Piccadilly.

And the German items on the menu are hardly ‘fine dining’, more like gutbürgeliche Küche that has been messed about to justify prices that are twice what you pay in an average Gasthof. And probably half-size portions too.

    • JDB says:

In addition to Launceston Place which is in a different league (and in the Plat offer) Blueprint is the best food and value of the D&Ds near Tower Bridge. Angler also excellent, just off Moorgate.

    • Alex says:

Launceston Place is superb. Has deserved a Michelin Star for a long time but is oddly overlooked time and time again.
