Join HfP and Globe-Trotter for a private shopping evening this Christmas

We’d be delighted if you could join us for a private shopping event and reception on Thursday 15th December, hosted by luxury luggage manufacturer Globe-Trotter.

If you are in the market for a smart suitcase, you’ve probably taken a look at Globe-Trotter. Established 125 years ago, Globe-Trotter handmake all of their suitcases in the UK. The company is world renowned for the quality and workmanship that goes into the production of its luggage.

Knowing that the HfP reader is a person of refined taste, Globe-Trotter is hosting a small reader reception at their flagship store in the Burlington Arcade in London.

We are offering 30 HfP readers with an interest in travel and craftmanship the opportunity to come and enjoy a glass of bubbly, view the latest Globe-Trotter products and chat to Rob, Rhys and other readers.

The event will take place at the Globe-Trotter store in the historic Burlington Arcade (between Green Park and Piccadilly Circus) from 6pm-8pm on Thursday 15th December. There will be Globe-Trotter staff around to answer questions and show off the cases and bags available. Christmas is coming, after all ….

Tickets for the event cost £10. Globe-Trotter is offering a 10% discount and a free luggage tag worth £95 for all attendees who purchase a Globe-Trotter product on the night. It’s worth noting that Globe-Trotter very, very rarely discounts so this is a good opportunity to jump in. If you need more time to decide, the 10% saving will be valid for a month after the event.

Because it is a small store, and to maximise the number of readers who can attend, we are limiting tickets to one per person.

You can purchase your ticket using this link here from noon today (Monday 5th).

We look forward to seeing you on Thursday 15th.

I saw Trotter and thought of Only Fools and Horses. Delboy getting a load of knockoff luggage tags “Normally these go for £95 in the west end, but for you it’s a fiver” and then not selling any!

  • Mutley says:

I very niche market given their suitcase price £2-3kish. The average UK salary is £29600, equates to £1950 monthly which is slightly less than what my wife earns and who describes herself as a better than average nurse. Fortunately, my two jobs bring in enough to keep us in Bollinger.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Respectfully this blog isn’t really catering for those on the average salary (Ofocurse they read but not the target audience)

The small number of tickets reflect the fact that only a small subset of them are interested in a £2k+ suitcase.

    • babyg says:

Speaking of Bollinger, laithwaites now align(or unalign) their AMEX offers with the pricing of the their Bollinger, new AMEX offer for laithwaites last night and at the same time the Bollinger (50 down to 37) discount disappeared…

    • Lady London says:

Globetrotter prices, and their marketing, were not always so.

They seem to have been Prada-ized.

Whereas they used to be known for classic style suitcases, very acceptable quality, not over-marketed. Certainly not upmarket, but solid. Kind of like the trunks you only used to be able to get only in Harrods. IIRC I had a look at some of the ‘nouveau’ ones in Harrods, and found the quality not what it was. Considerably lighter, did not seem as durable.

So nice but…worth £2,000 up? It will be nice to have a full turnout of the HfP team at the event though and I hope those who go, enjoy it.

  • Just Nick says:

Just booked a ticket as I have a strange luggage fetish. My wife despairs.

  • dubaiboy says:

Maybe they should do the luggage version of pre-ripped & scuffed jeans? To appeal to an untapped buyer market.

Ie make their top range look about 20 yrs old and as if it’s been around the world a few times.

Get the production guys to go in with the sanders, the Stanley knives, the dust & dirt, the mould & mildew – make them truly look like well-loved family heirlooms (but still quality underneath).

There’s luxury and then there’s a p*ss take, especially in these difficult times where even wealthy people are feeling the pinch. I used to extend my budget to get Rimowa cases, but after one got stolen 4 years ago, a cheap £30 polycarbonate from Primark had to suffice for a last minute trip. 100 checked-in flights later and it’s still intact, showing much less wear than the Rimowa used to. Going forward, I’ll stick with cheap suitcases. These prices are outrageous and don’t even get me started on the £95 leather tag.

    • dubaiboy says:

BA replace your suitcases that they break with Samsonites, apparently. I keep meaning to take them up on the offer. I’ve got a wife who seems to break quite a few things. Zips/ Handles on suitcases. Car fittings. Door openers. Oven bits. Fridge bits. Lights. Keys. Tiles. Car clutches. Gears. Mobiles.

Funny how I’ve got twice her strength but don’t really break much.

Anyway – we’ve got a nice old Samsonite suitcase with a broken zip and also broken handle – not sure exactly if or when my wife did that – but we did fly BA a lot when it all went broken, so maybe it was them (not my wife). So my cunning plan is to fly BA then claim a new/ replacement Samsonite suitcase from them as they might have caused the damage in the first place.

    • JDB says:

I couldn’t believe it when people were talking about wasting what seemed like a lot of money on Rimowa suitcases a while ago when there was some Amex offer, but this is on a new level. I don’t mind spending a great deal of money on something worthwhile, but even from a privileged background I was, from a very early age, taught about the value of money/things. A suitcase at this price point, however beautiful or fashionable fails the value test.

    • Lady London says:

Eeeek! You went to *Primark* for luggage and admitted it on HfP ? There’s taking the p, and then..

I had been tempted to mention Matalan as a source of cheap luggage if stuck with an urgent need, but had refrained. K2, the expert airline authorised luggage repairer, also has a small selection ofsome sturdy stuff for sale sometimes at their Maidenhead repair premises, such as Travelon. And in the US, always worth looking at TJMaxx and Marshalls (if Marshalls survived- the owning group’s brands must have had a tough time in covid)

Just don’t tell anyone if you see me doing some leche-vitrine in the Burlington Arcade, or at my private favourites nearby..

      • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

I must be an abject failure then.

The last case I bought came from TK Maxx and that’s only because Sports Direct didn’t have the one I wanted. TK Maxx has some good brands on offer so always worth a look in store and online (for home and store delivery)

For the US Ross can also be also good for luggage If there is a store in the area where you are staying.

A fool and their money are easily parted.

  • Numpty says:

Samsonite hard shell with clamps, not zips, for me – with a bit of green masking tape on it to identify it from all the others. Guess I’m not the target audience anymore – the days of buying loose veggies individually for extra Clubcard points are long gone!

    • Lady London says:

Apparently luggage repairers used to recommend the Samsonite Oyster as solid enough and easy to repair.

However old Samsonite (and Lark, a branch which they bought and demolished), is not new Samsonite. New Samsonsite might as well be almost anything… except that within the first year, when my new Samsonite spinner couldn’t hack British pavements, Samsonite did a decent replacement under guarantee immediately, aided by K2, without murmur.

      • Numpty says:

The current Samsonite with clamps is still a robust case, but they do also sell a lot of expensive cases that don’t stand up to being thrown about, and no better than a Tripp. For the old Oyster they’d also send out replacement parts FOC – wore out the castors.

My biggest issue with the old case was it was standard issue to Emirates crew, and same colour as mine.

        • ba says:

I usually buy Samsonite but have been eyeing up a Briggs & Riley set of hard luggage after getting one of their garment duffel bags which is excellent. They also have a lifetime guarantee.
Any views on Samsonite vs Briggs & Riley (or indeed vs Globe Trotter)

  • dubaiboy says:

We’re all dying to know if some mug bought a £2000 suitcase?

  • Marco Polo says:

Where can you buy an HFP mug

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

I have a thing for mugs, always get one on holiday! But even I’d do the same, or put it in the work kitchen…

    • Numpty says:

A Hfp pin badge, or (cheap) luggage tag, or a sticker! That’d be the secret identifier to each other. Then I could stand outside Concorde Lounge until a random HfPer could guest me in!

    • k says:

      At the Globe-Trotter event!
