Travellers to Qatar now need compulsory insurance from a Doha-based company

Anyone travelling on Qatar Airways in recent months will have noticed that the airline requires you to present travel insurance documents at check in, even if connecting.

This came as a surprise to my wife last October, who ended up calling me in Dubai from Heathrow Terminal 4 check in asking for her paperwork – luckily I could generate a certificate from the Amex Platinum website within 5 minutes and email it to her.

The situation has now taken a rather silly turn. As of 1st February, anyone entering Qatar (transit passengers are excluded) is required to have travel insurance issued by a company based in Qatar.

New slippery insurance rules for travel to Qatar

Handily, the nine recommended companies – see here – all sell identical policies at an identical price (50 Riyals, around £11).

I am flying to Doha on Monday and was obliged to buy a policy. I picked Doha Insurance Group on the basis of it having the prettiest logo. The good news is that the form is very quick to fill in (they’re not bothered about your medical history etc) and my insurance certificate arrived instantly by email.

To be fair …. £11 for full medical health insurance – with no restrictions if you have pre-existing conditions – is a great price.

If you don’t have travel insurance and are travelling to Doha with no onward connections, it will probably save you money if you are only bothered about medical cover. It’s only a problem if you already have insurance, since you are forced to pay again.

Dubai on a QF is better anyway
U-turn Al must needs to pay his legal fees for his Airbus tantrums somehow.

For reference I wasn’t asked for anything at check in this afternoon. Now, I just landed in Doha an hour ago and they accepted my insurance I purchased in the UAE (Allianz, I am a uae resident). It’s a worldwide policy for a 2 weeks trip. I just purchased it 3 days ago so perhaps she took pity on me. Perhaps she didn’t care.

The immigration lady looked it up and down and looked like she was going to say something but accepted it as fine without mentioning anything about needing a Qatari company’s insurance.

Flew with Qatar in “first” from the UAE to doha in case that makes a difference.

  • Rocky says:

Do you need Qatar travel insurance even if you are only transit?

I have my own Amex travel insurance and don’t want to purchase Qatar specific insurance where my transit is only 1 hr.

Qatar insurance companies must be taking a lead from rip off Britain! All countries could follow suit and what a mess there would be.

  • KMcCallum says:

Is it possible to pay a fee to extend the AMEX platinum travel insurance to over 70s?

  • Alan says:

Can I check you need travel insurance when connecting (I get it doesn’t have to be the local Qatari insurance). Only asking as I’m due to fly LHR-DOH-SIN return in a few weeks.

My understanding for my return leg, I can do an QR early check in at the Jewel Changi. This is only available for select destinations including UK. It excludes destinations such as USA as they require document checks such as vaccine certificates?, etc. So if a verification at check in for insurance is required for Doha transit then this early check in is no longer possible I assume?

Ukraine started this compulsory insurance scam on the excuse of Covid. All priced the same, multiple providers and no way to opt-out even if you have ultra-fancy cover.

    • No Longer Entitled says:

I would be grateful that Ukraine provider this cover. I would imagine most domestic insurers wont cover you given travel is against FCDO advice.

  • NigelthePensionerr says:

Just to confirm to all readers….you do NOT need this insurance if you are in transit and remaining airside
