  I’ve never used Deliveroo. What’s the tipping policy? When I lived in the US and used Uber, if you didn’t tip in advance no one would bring your food order.

    On something as basic as food delivery we don’t tip, maybe a little if there’s an exceptional deal (50% off & 2-4-1 for example). Crazy to think that someone wouldn’t even deliver the food if you don’t tip, I’d be waiting for ages wondering what had happened! What happens to the food / charging if you don’t tip?!

    Always amazes me that drivers feel obliged that you must tip them? We never tip by standard, unless something crazy good happens

    Wondering, what happens to your food when you dont tip, does it get thrown away??

      For US platforms like Doordash, drivers can see the tip offered when choosing whether to accept a job. So you might struggle to get a driver if you don’t offer a tip.

        The reason for this is that tips have come with a reduction in standard pay, so drivers need the tip in order to make the same money they used to make before.

      It’s got so bad I now seek out hotels with club lounges where I can reasonably expect to serve myself. It avoids any need to interact with the staff and there’s no provision of a zero charge bill to elicit a tip. Similarly I have a US Starbucks card I top up and use that to order to go – walk in, grab my waiting items, leave. Otherwise the Starbucks tills ask you for a tip if ordering whilst in store.

        I will not ever tip in a “purchase something at a counter and have it handed to me there” situation and have never had any trouble whatsoever with this in the US. Zero – no sighing, looks, surliness – anything.

        Yes, the till prompts, but the “zero” button is there.

    Tim M – I think Uber eats or Deliveroo do collect from Slaithwaite though as I once encountered a male shirtless very sweaty very tattooed driver on a summer day in Ashbys Deli cafe (next to Aldi) waiting to collect an order and the owner asked him to put a shirt on or wait outside and the driver got all sweary and shouty – saying “make me – I don’t have to – I work for my f……ing self”. When he did collect the order he literally just threw it in to the car, parked on and blocking the pavement outside , lit a cigarette and screeched away music blaring. I thought I wouldn’t want my food delivered by someone who looked like that or acted like that.

  I usually add £1 to all my deliveries, maybe a little more if I order a lot (rarely). I feel bad for those cyclists and £1 doesn’t change my life.

  But yes, I hate tipping and the tip culture. I don’t get why we need to tip anywhere. I don’t get a tip at the end of my work day in the office! Tips are a stealth tax imposed on what it’s usually overpriced food… and the States have gone bonkers about it. In restaurants you now have service added on top of your bill and then waiters ask for a tip too. I mean…

    The overpriced part is the most important. You can take the menu price, add 25% already, plus delivery (if you pay) and service fees. Usually turns out to +50% to actually eating in the place!

      None of that goes to the delivery driver, though. Even the inflated menu prices don’t really go to the restaurant – they’re just there to cover the huge commission percentage that the platform takes off the payment to the restaurant.

    For the Amazon offer, the Deliveroo Plus goes away. Not sure how quick, but I cancelled my Prime last week and it’s no longer showing the Deliveroo Plus stuff in my Deliveroo account.

      Actually, seems like it’s still there and it says I got free delivery for Five Guys for a random £15+ order I made. I do recall the Deliveroo Plus going away last year after I had cancelled for a couple of weeks.
